Born in České Budějovice, Czechoslovakia, he competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia, going out in the quarter finals of the heavyweight event. He returned to the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome, Italy, again as a heavyweight boxer where he went one better, going out in the semi final to finish in third place. In Moscow 1963 he became European champion.

After some difficulty in getting alongside the drifting tug they were all rescued although several of them were suffering from extreme seasickness.Morris, Jeff (2001) pp.13–14 Thomas went one better and received a silver medal for a rescue on 7 December 1959 when a long unpowered barge loaded with large steel pipes was cast adrift from its tug. Rwabwogo met Bulgarian Georgi Kostadinov in the gold medal match on 10 September. Kostadinov was the stronger in the first two rounds but, in the third, Rwabwogo mounted a "heavy counter-offensive" in an attempt to recover. However, Kostadinov held out to win the gold, with Rwabwogo claiming silver.

Wagefeld was almost an ever-present in the team by this stage, forming a midfielder partnership with the veteran Steffen Heidrich, and after a successful 2002–03 season in which Dynamo finished eighth, they went one better the following year, with a second-place finish and promotion to the 2. Molyneux joined Everton in 1878, when the club was founded as St. Domingo FC. He became Everton secretary-manager on 23 August 1889. His Toffees team finished as runners-up in the Football League in the 1889–90 season and won the Liverpool Senior Cup. Everton went one better in the 1890–91 season, winning the Football League and retaining the Liverpool Senior Cup. In 1892, Molyneux was one of the instigators behind the club's move across Stanley Park from Anfield to Goodison Park.

The following year he left football to pursue his love of athletics. As a decathlete, Athorne finished second to John O'Neill in the 1965 Australian Open Track & Field Championships. There are some records of a Noarlunga Football Club being first formed in the 1890s. The first record of Noarlunga participating in an organised competition was with the establishment of the Alexandra Football Association in 1913, with Noarlunga finishing runners-up to Clarendon that season. The following season Noarlunga went one better, winning the Alexandra FA Premiership. Noarlunga transferred to the Southern Football Association in 1915, but this move lasted only one season due to the competition disbanding the following year due to the First World War.

The 2001–02 Irish Cup was the 122nd edition of Northern Ireland's premier football knock-out cup competition. It concluded on 11 May 2002 with the final. Glentoran were the defending champions, winning their second successive Irish Cup last season after a 1–0 win over archrivals Linfield in the 2001 final. This season Linfield went one better, to lift the cup for the 36th time overall and the first time in seven years, with a 2–1 win over Portadown in the final.

The origins for the reunion go back several years, when Schon suggested that he and Carlos Santana record together. After financial difficulties, Gresley Rovers liquidated at the end of the 2008–09 season, forming a new football club, Gresley F.C. Stephen Guthrie is a wheelchair rugby player from New Zealand, and a member of the national team, the Wheel Blacks. Stephen was part of the wheel blacks at three consecutive Paralympics. His first appearance was in 1996 when wheelchair rugby was a demonstration event and the New Zealand team finished in fourth place, four years later in 2000 he was part of the team that went one better and won the bronze medal. His final appearance was in the 2004 Summer Paralympics where the wheel blacks displace the American team to win the gold medal.

The 2001–02 season was the 104th season of competitive football played by Arsenal. Having ended the previous season as FA Cup finalists and league runners-up to Manchester United, the club went one better in this campaign, by completing the domestic double – their second in four years and third overall. Arsenal won the Premier League by a seven-point margin, were unbeaten away from home and managed the unique feat of scoring in every league game. It was a winning combination as he claimed the Junior TT and finished second in the Senior TT as well as winning the 350cc European Championship. In 1937 he went one better in the Senior and took a brilliant win and setting the first 90 mph plus lap of the Snaefell Mountain Course. 2006 saw one of the club's most successful seasons in senior football. In the ACFL Div 1, Longstone reached the final, only to be cruelly denied the title in the closing minutes after conceding a late goal. This showed a great improvement from the previous year, as the club were locked in a relegation battle previously. Travis came into the team at inside right against Blackpool and scored, but Darlington went out 2–1. In the league, they went one better than the previous season, won their second North- Eastern League title, and were elected to the newly formed Northern Section of the Third Division. Yuriko Kobayashi (; born 12 December 1988 in Hyōgo) is a Japanese middle- and long-distance runner who specializes in the 1500 metres and 5000 metres. She represented Japan at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She started out in middle- distance events, running in the 800 metres at the 2004 World Junior Championships and then winning a 1500 m silver medal at the World Youth Championships in Athletics the following year. She won the bronze medal in the 1500 m at the 2005 Asian Championships in Athletics and went one better at the 2006 Asian Games by taking the silver medal in Doha.

Spencer in 2016 He returned to race in the AMA Superbike Championship in the 1990s, winning three races. He was eighth in 1991, riding a Honda for Two Brothers Racing, and went one better in 1992. In 1995 he raced a Fast By Ferracci Ducati to ninth, and at the end of the year took over the works Ducati from Mauro Lucchiari in Superbike World Championship. Spencer raced under several different marques during his racing career, winning his first Superbike National Championship race aboard a Kawasaki, but he is most closely associated with Honda and his partnership with Grand Prix tuner, Erv Kanemoto.

Opoul XIII had a rather nondescript and uneventful early years, indeed it would be season 1984/85 while they were in the bottom league Federal Division now called the National Division 2 that they surprisingly reached the league final. There would be no fairy tale ending though as they were beaten 19–8 by Mazan XIII. In season 88/89 they went one better and won the competition after victory over Saint- Hyppolite XIII 27–12. After another decade of no trophies it was announced in 2000 that they were going to merge with close neighbours Salses XIII and become Salses Opoul XIII.

On 18 September Johnstone were the opponents at Boghead in the second round of the Qualifying Cup. Again no changes were made to the team. The teams met at the same stage of the competition last season when Dumbarton ran out 4-1 winners and this time they went one better. Hill was first to find the mark and although Johnstone equalised it was one way traffic thereafter with Hill again, Ritchie, Brander and Gibson all scoring in a 5-1 win. Johnstone’s task was not helped by one of their backs being hampered by an injury throughout the second half.

Baird had a very successful year in European Tour events as he reached at least the last 16 stage in five of the eight events. At the Kay Suzanne Memorial Cup he won through to the quarter-finals where he lost 4–1 to Ben Woollaston and he went one better at the Gdynia Open, losing 4–1 against Fergal O'Brien in the semifinals. This helped Baird finish 11th on the Order of Merit to qualify for the Finals for the first time. He faced Anthony Hamilton in the opening round and was edged out 4–3.

Felisha Legette-Jack (born September 4, 1966) is the Head Women's basketball coach at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. Prior to that, she spent six seasons at Indiana University, where she headed up the women's program, leading the Hoosiers to three postseason appearances. Coming from a very athletically gifted family, she first came to prominence at Nottingham Senior High School in the mid 80s. Her brother, Ronnie, had led the Bulldogs to a state championship earlier, but Felisha went one better, leading the Lady Bulldogs to two state titles before going on to star at Syracuse University.

Marku burst on to the higher echelons of the strongman circuit when he won the England's Strongest Man competition in 2006. He went on to compete at the UK's Strongest Man (known as the "UKSC" because it is run by the UK Strength Council) that year where he came third behind Glenn Ross and Terry Hollands. In 2007 he repeated his feat of winning the England's Strongest Man. In that same year he competed at both the Britain's Strongest Man ("BSM") finals and in the UKSC where he went one better than in 2006, coming second (again to Glenn Ross).

The NWCFL Division One Runners-Up spot was claimed in 1987–88, with Rossendale losing out to Colne Dynamoes on goal difference for the title. They went one better the season after, claiming the Championship and setting a couple of League records on the way. They remained unbeaten in the League until February, a run spanning 22 games, and set a new points record of 56 from just 34 matches (in the days of two points for a win). In 2005 Ingall went one better, collecting his first V8 Supercar championship after having been runner-up four times. Ingall went into the season with a plan and he followed it to the final race of the season, which was held at the Phillip Island circuit. He raced "smarter" than he ever had before and worked out his strategy around the V8 Supercars points system to collect the title ahead of Craig Lowndes and Marcos Ambrose. In 2006 Ingall saw the championship slip from his grasp due to poor performance from his car which saw him finish the championship in eighth place.

They went one better against the same opponents in the FAI Cup Final. Playing at Lansdowne Road, on a bigger pitch that allowed the wingers more space, Kirby fed Sean Francis to open the scoring, as Longford went on to beat St Pat's 2–0 to win the first senior trophy in their history. His performance over the season earned him a nomination for the PFAI Player of the Year award, but he lost out to Shelbourne's Jason Byrne. Kirby made more appearances than any other Longford player as the club trebled its trophy collection in 2004.

Tian could not qualify for the main draw of any of the ranking events during the season. However, he had a very good season in the minor-ranking Players Tour Championship Events. At the second European Tour Event he won four matches which included a last 16 triumph over top 16 player Stuart Bingham to reach the quarter-finals, where he was whitewashed 0–4 by Neil Robertson. Tian went one better at the sixth European Tour Event with wins over the likes of Jamie Burnett, Mark Davis and Martin Gould in the quarter-finals to advance to the semis.

The new ground was further developed with the addition of floodlights and a stand to enable the club to take its place in the Premier Division. In 1994, following several successful seasons, Rocester became founder members of the new Midland Football Alliance. After a second-place finish in their first season in the new league, they went one better in 1998–99, winning the league title and claiming promotion to the Southern League Midland Division. They were to find life harder at this level, however, and after two consecutive last-place finishes the Romans were relegated back to the Alliance in 2002.

After spending the beginning of his rugby career with St Austell from the age of 6 through to U16 he joined Perranporth. After one season at Perranporth playing for their Colts side he returned to St Austell to start his adult career. He came into prominence for St Austell during the 2009–10 season, when playing at scrum-half he showed good try scoring instinct as he helped his team to a third-place finish in Tribute Cornwall/Devon. The next season his team went one better after clinching the second promotion spot by finishing as runners up behind runaway league champions, Bideford.

Many of the merged clubs which are part of the Red Sox Manawatu history have had prominent places in regional or national football. Kiwi United reached the later rounds of the Chatham Cup on many occasions from the 1950s, reaching the 1973 Quarter-finals, as did Palmerston City in 1969. Manawatu AFC played in the New Zealand National Soccer League from 2000 to 2003, and reached the Quarter-finals in 1997, 2001 and 2003. Palmerston North Thistle also reached the Quarter-finals of the competition in 1967, and went one better to reach the Semi-finals in 1964, however they lost 3–1 to Mount Roskill.

The 1992–93 season was Stoke City's 86th season in the Football League and 4th in the third tier now known as the Second Division following the formation of the Premier League. After a successful 1991–92 season which saw Stoke win the Football League Trophy and reach the play-offs the team went one better in 1992–93 as they claimed the Second Division title in fine style breaking the club's unbeaten record after going 25 league matches without defeat. Stoke collected 93 points from 138 on offer and racked up an impressive +39 goal difference as the club returned to the second tier.

For the start of the 1992–93 season they were among the founder members of the Devon League. They went on to win the winning that league twice before gaining promotion to the Western League Division One in 2001. They won the Western League Division One title in 2004–05, earning another promotion to the Western League Premier Division where they have finished in the top six during each of their seasons at that level. Willand Rovers made it to the Les Phillips Cup Final in 2006, losing to Corsham Town, but went one better in 2007, winning the Cup after a final against Welton Rovers.

In season 2007 PoPa played in the Kakkonen (Second Division) in the Western Group, reaching second place just one point short of promotion to the Ykkönen (First Division). In 2008 the team went one better winning the Western Group of Second Division in a crushing manner and were promoted to the Ykkönen for 2009. The club maintained their rapid progress in 2009 by finishing 4th in the Ykkönen and are well on target of bringing Veikkausliiga football back to Pori. The key people behind the initiative are Antti Sumiala (sport and managing director), Rami Nieminen (manager / marketing executive), Pertti Lundell (coach) and Risto Puustinen (coach).

The Frissbee KR3 started out as a Lola T330, and featured a 5-litre Chevrolet V8 engine. It was first used by Horst Kroll's self-run Horst Kroll Racing team at the opening round of the 1984 Can-Am season, held at Mosport; he finished in fourth place. At Dallas, he finished eighth, and fifth of the full Can-Am entries, before finishing second at Brainerd, fifth at Lime Rock, second at Road Atlanta, and fourth at Trois-Rivières. The next round of the season was held again at Mosport; he went one better than the first race of the season, and took the KR3 to third place.

Jack Lisowski in 2011 Lisowski had a very good season in the Players Tour Championship series of tournaments in the 2011/2012 season. He reached the quarter-finals of Event 6 and Event 9 and went one better in Event 5, where he was knocked out in the last 4 against compatriot, and eventual winner, Andrew Higginson. The results ensured he finished 24th in the Order of Merit and therefore claimed the final spot for the 2012 Finals. He beat Barry Hawkins 4–3 to reach the last 16 of a ranking event for the first time in the Finals, before losing 1–4 to Neil Robertson.

In 2004, the Ice Dogs went one better and claimed the AIHL championship and the Goodall Cup for the first time in the team's history. They matched-up against the dominant North Stars, who won all but one match in the regular season, in the final for the second season in a row but this time they defeated them 3–1. October 2007, the Blacktown Ice Arena closed down leaving the Ice Dogs without a rink for the 2008 season. The Ice Dogs moved to Baulkham Hills and played out of the Sydney Ice Arena for one season as they looked for a new home.

The 1885–86 season was Newton Heath LYR's third season of competitive football. The only competition that the club entered their first team in this season was the Manchester Cup, a competition in which they had reached the final at the first attempt the previous season. It was a case of "second time lucky" for the Heathens, as they went one better in the 1886 competition, beating Manchester 2–1 in the final to claim the first trophy in the club's history. The Lancashire Cup, which the club had entered and been soundly beaten in both of the two previous seasons, split into "Senior" and "Junior" competitions in 1885.

In the same year, he narrowly avoided a jail term over driving offenses. After being among Adelaide's best players in a poor 2010 season, Thompson was runner-up to Richard Douglas in the Malcolm Blight Medal for Adelaide's best and fairest player. He went one better the next year, winning the award in a landslide after racking up the second most disposals in the entire competition. His season included a 51 disposal game in round 22 against : the second highest amount of disposals in a match by an VFL/AFL player since the recording of statistics, falling two short of Greg Williams' 53 disposals in 1989.

Mostert's GT career launched from further entries in the GT3 class of the Bathurst 12 Hour, starting in 2017 in a customer MARC Cars Australia BMW M6 GT3. Mostert qualified a surprise second on the grid and led the early stages of the race before technical issues struck down the car. Mostert's performance led to a call up to drive for the factory-supported Schnitzer Motorsport in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, he went one better in qualifying, taking the Allan Simonsen Pole Position Trophy, and once again started the race strongly before being involved in an incident in lapped traffic at the start of Conrod Straight.

Lavington hosted the grand final of the then-NSWRL/ARL's pre-season competition, the Tooheys Challenge Cup 1994 and 1995. The South Sydney Rabbitohs won their first major trophy since their 1971 premiership win when they shocked two-time reigning premiers the Brisbane Broncos 27–26 in the Tooheys Challenge Cup final. In 1995 the Broncos went one better and won the Cup with a 30-14 win over Cronulla- Sutherland. The New South Wales Rugby League had scheduled the City vs Country representative game for Lavington in 2007 but the fixture was shifted to Coffs Harbour, as the existing lighting was deemed unsuitable for television.

De Vreede made his European Tour debut in 2014 at the Gibraltar Darts Trophy and was beaten 6–3 by Adam Hunt in the first round. He went one better at the European Darts Open by losing 6–1 to Kim Huybrechts in the second round. When Richie Burnett withdrew from the 2015 PDC World Darts Championship due to personal reasons, De Vreede received a place in the draw through the European Pro Tour Order of Merit. In his debut in the event, De Vreede played Dave Chisnall in the first round and was beaten 3–0, missing one set dart in the third.

Tom again had an outstanding season taking out North's Best and Fairest award and leading the side in what turned out to be a marathon finals series. North played in five games (having drawn two) and fell narrowly at the last hurdle to Sturt by 5 points.1919 SAFL Grand Final. In 1920 North Adelaide, led by Tom Leahy, went one better and took out the Premiership against Norwood 1920 SAFL Grand Final. Tom also captained the South Australian side that took on the Victorian side on the MCG and claimed a rare "away" victory against Victoria, 10-12(72)to 9-11(65).

Stevens was born in Dundee, Scotland, and by 1920, he was playing football for English North Eastern League club Darlington. He scored their second goal as they eliminated Football League First Division club Sheffield Wednesday from the 1919–20 FA Cup in front of a Monday-afternoon crowd of 52,388. The following season, he contributed to Darlington's winning the North Eastern League title, thus ensuring their inclusion in the newly formed Northern Section of the Third Division. Stevens helped Darlington to second place in their first season in the Football League, and went one better three years later, when they gained promotion to the Second Division as champions.

He was rewarded for his outstanding form in 2009/10 when he picked up the Young Player of the Year and Most Improved Player of the Year awards. Twelve months later he went one better as he was named the Player-of-the-Year at the club's end of season dinner after his impressive role helping Warriors win promotion back to the Aviva Premiership. Declan battled his way through the field to fourth in the opening race on Saturday, despite starting in ninth after on-going niggles with the car. Declan then went one better in the second race on Sunday, to equal his best-ever result in the Ginetta GT4 SuperCup, before another fine drive in the damp third and final race saw him again finish third – netting him his strongest overall weekend showing yet in the G55s. The results vault the Century Motorsport- Whitley Neill Gin team man up from ninth to joint second in the 2017 Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup Drivers’ Championship with 110 points on the board.

Baker was born in Belfast on 18 February 1958. After finishing runner-up in the 1982 World Indoor Bowls Championship he went one better in 1984 clinching the World Indoor title. Baker was part of the Gold Medal winning triples for the combined Irish team in the 1984 World Outdoor Bowls Championship and Gold Medal winning fours in the 1988 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. In the 2004 World Championships he won a third gold medal for the combined Irish team, in the fours with Jonathan Ross, Noel Graham and Neil Booth and a silver medal with Noel Graham in the pairs during the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship.

The club went one better the following season. After thrashing Cumnock 5–0 in the quarter-final at Loch Park, then seeing off Bonnyrigg Rose in a second semi-final replay, Glens' lined up against Irvine Meadow at Hampden Park in the first ever all-Ayrshire final. Despite going in front, then missing a penalty at 1–1, Athletic lost the game 2–1 in front of 21,384 spectators. The club entered a period of decline in the late 1960s and early 70s. A Scottish Junior Cup run to the semi-finals in 1978–79 was ended by Cumnock at Rugby Park, but paved the way for improved fortunes.

Under manager Jimmy McIntyre, Saints went one better in 1921–22, finishing equal on points with Plymouth Argyle but with a superior goal average, with Turner once again ever-present. He was the only member of the promotion side who cost Southampton a fee, with Saints conceding only 21 goals. This total of goals conceded in a 42 match season was a Football League record which stood until 1979 and remains a record for Southampton. The half back line of Bert Shelley, Alec Campbell and Turner cemented Saints place in the Second Division over the next few years, until Turner lost his place to Arthur Bradford in April 1924.

With VFL players in the team they had immediate success, topping the second division ladder and losing just three games in the home and away season. Caulfield however lost their preliminary final and thus missed out on playing in the grand final. They went one better the following season and made it to the decider which they lost to Geelong West in the last minute; the Geelong club had been unbeaten all season, but Caulfield put up a fight, leading by 12 points at three-quarter time. In 1973, the club won its first and only premiership, defeating Brunswick 18.20 (128) to 14.22 (106) in the grand final; full forward John Logan kicked six goals.

Although Monet's Garden was a winner of big races at Ascot and Huntingdon, he was perhaps best known for his wins at Aintree: Of his 32 career starts, 9 of them were at Aintree, producing 5 wins. He finished runner-up to Garde Champetre in the 2004 Mersey Novices' Hurdle, notably beating Inglis Drever into fourth place with Court Shareef in third. His next appearance at Liverpool was in the Liverpool Hurdle of 2005, then only a Grade 2 contest. Monet's Garden went one better this time however in a dramatic race- with the well fancied Rule Supreme unseating Ruby Walsh after being hampered by the refusing Westender at only the second flight.

Having finished in the bottom two of the Varsity Cup before his arrival, Janse van Rensburg guided them to fifth spot in 2012 and went one better in 2013, helping them reach the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in their history. His coaching of the team also led to him being named an assistant coach for the South African Universities team in the same season. After the 2013 season, Janse van Rensburg was replaced as head coach by David Maidza, but remained involved with NMMU in a consulting capacity. At the start of 2014, Janse van Rensburg was appointed as the Director of Rugby at Grey High School.

Nigel Wagstaff's Oxford also signed Iversen for the 2004 season as a full-time Elite League rider, after he had earned a 6.57 point average over 32 meetings the previous year. In Denmark he helped Holsted to a third Division One title in as many years. Once again he was selected for the Speedway World cup where he went one better than his score in the previous year – 11 points including wins over Leigh Adams and Adam Shields. Danish Grand Prix organizers selected Iversen as the Wildcard in Copenhagen on 26 June, taking his chance he reached the semi finals in his first Grand Prix and ended the meeting on 13 points.

That season, they also made their debut in the FA Cup, making it to the First Qualifying Round before being knocked out by Hemel Hempstead Town. The club then repeated this finish four seasons later in the 2008–09 season. The following season the club went one better as they became champions of the Combined Counties Football League, and earned promotion to Division One Central of the Southern Football League. They also completed a double by winning the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup when they beat Enfield Town 1–0 in the final at The Beveree Stadium. North Greenford United finished 18th in the 2010–11 campaign, in their first season at that level.

Landa also reached the semi-finals in Atlanta, as he beat Alvaro Beltran in the quarterfinals, but lost to Kane Waselenchuk in the semis. Then Landa went one better, as he not only reached an IRT final for the first time at the 2018 Lewis Drug Pro-Am in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, but he won the final by defeating Daniel De La Rosa, 15-6, 7-15, 11-10, in the final. En route to the final, Landa beat Tim Landeryou, 15-5, 3-15, 11-6, in the Round of 16, Rocky Carson in the quarterfinals, 15-14, 11-15, 11-4, and Samuel Murray, 15-11, 15-7, in the semi-finals.

On 6 June 2002, while leading Mexico at the World Cup, Aguirre joined Spanish La Liga club CA Osasuna when Miguel Ángel Lotina quit for RC Celta de Vigo; he had previously played for the Navarrese club. In his first season in Pamplona, the club reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, losing 4–2 on aggregate to Recreativo de Huelva. In 2004–05, Aguirre went one better, guiding Osasuna to the cup final, where they lost 2–1 after extra time to Real Betis. In the following league season, the Rojillos beat Sevilla FC to a joint-best 4th place and their first qualification to the UEFA Champions League, having led the table after 11 games.

He joined Yeovil Town on a two-year contract at the start of the 2010–11 season. He scored his first goal for Yeovil in the FA Cup match with Hartlepool United in 2010. On 13 August 2011, he scored his first league goal from outside the area in a 3–1 win over Oldham Athletic, and went one better with a strike from 30 yards to seal a 1–0 win against Wycombe Wanderers on 13 September 2011, this goal was later nominated for Mitre Goal of the Year. He also scored twice in the FA Cup, with goals in the 3–0 win over Hereford United, and the 2–2 draw with Fleetwood Town.

That year, KÍ not only won their first title in twenty years, but they managed to reach the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League for the first time, defeating Riteriai from Lithuania on away goals. In 2020, KÍ went one better, becoming the first Faroese team to qualify for the Europa League playoff round by beating Dinamo Tbilisi 6–1 in the third qualifying round, which KÍ had reached for the first time. This shock result, against a much larger and more prestigious European club, was watched by seventy percent of the Klaksvik population, and set up what was labelled 'the biggest game in their history' against the Irish club Dundalk F.C, which they lost 3-1.

The Colts went through that maiden season unbeaten at home and clinched the league title on Wednesday 28 August when they beat Weymouth 63-15 (the most convincing victory of the season). Twelve months later The Colts retained their Second Division title and even went one better by adding the Knock-Out Cup to the trophy cabinet. Many of the riders used in those two debut seasons went on to further their careers at first division level. In 1970, the Belle Vue management looked for a new home for their nursery team, and this was found at Rochdale where the Colts moved — still under the control of Belle Vue — to become the Rochdale Hornets.

In 2012, Groenewald returned to KwaZulu-Natal when he joined the . He made two appearances for them during the 2012 Vodacom Cup competition. Still eligible to play at Under-21 level, he played in all thirteen of the s' matches during the 2012 Under-21 Provincial Championship, scoring three tries as they reached the semi-final of the competition. He played club rugby for Durban Collegians in the 2013 Moor Cup, helping them to second place in the league and went one better in the 2014 Moor Cup when he was the top try-scorer in the league to help them win the title and qualify for the 2015 SARU Community Cup.

Hoping to build on the previous season's disappointing finish, the Latics went one better than 2003–04 by remaining unbeaten for the first 17 games of the 2004–05 season. Along with Sunderland and Ipswich, the Latics remained in the promotion hunt all season. By the last day of the season, Sunderland had already won the title and Wigan needed at least a draw against Reading – who themselves needed to win to finish in sixth place – to beat Ipswich to the last automatic promotion spot. A 3–1 victory in front of their home fans at the JJB Stadium earned Wigan Athletic promotion to the top division of English football for the first time in their 73-year history.

In 1998 the club moved from the Somers Sports Ground to share the ground of Halesowen Town, and in the same year gained admission to the West Midlands (Regional) League, initially in Division One South. In their very first season in the league Causeway finished as runners-up to Wellington and were promoted to the Premier Division, where their first season saw them finish in second place with 104 points. In 2001–02 they went one better, winning the league and with it promotion to the Midland Football Alliance, where they remain to this day. Before the start of the 2006–07 season, Halesowen Town terminated the ground share agreement with Causeway.

Founded in 1918, Feirense played only three Primeira Liga seasons in the 20th century – 1962–63, 1977–78 and 1989–90 – being relegated in each one. In 2009–10, the club came close to ending a two- decade exile but missed out on the last day, as local rivals S.C. Beira-Mar went up with Portimonense SC. The following year, Feirense went one better by coming second, missing out on the title on goal difference to Gil Vicente F.C. and winning promotion under Quim Machado in May 2011. However, a year later they were relegated. A four-season spell in the second tier ended with promotion in third place in May 2016, under manager José Mota.

The 1976 Bathurst winning Holden ToranaIn 1975 Morris finished second at Bathurst in the Ron Hodgson Torana SL/R5000 L34 with co-driver Frank Gardner. The following year Bob Morris, with British touring car ace John Fitzpatrick as co-driver, went one better – winning in a dramatic finish at Bathurst. In the final laps of the 1976 race John Fitzpatrick nursed home the ailing Morris Torana which was trailing smoke. Rival Torana driver Colin Bond was within striking distance of the lead if Fitzpatrick had to pit and there were emotional scenes as chief Ron Hodgson team mechanic, Bruce Richardson, slumped disconsolately in the pits seemingly resigned to seeing victory snatched from the team's grasp.

When the final whistle blew in that game, a 0–0 draw was enough, however in their match still on- going Dover Athletic scored a goal to mean that the Hawks would miss out on goal difference. In addition to the FA Trophy and Conference South disappointments, the Hawks also lost in the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup to Basingstoke Town 3-2 after extra time, despite battling back from a two- goal deficit to equalise in the final minute of injury time. The Hawks went one better in their 2014-15 Conference South campaign, finishing 5th and making the playoffs. However, the Hawks lost 4–2 on aggregate to eventual winners Boreham Wood.

In 2000, David Millar won the opening individual time trial in Futuroscope to hold yellow until stage four's team time trial. The next British rider to lead the general classification was Bradley Wiggins in 2012, after he placed second behind compatriot and teammate Chris Froome on stage seven's summit finish at the La Planche des Belles Filles ski station. Wiggins held the yellow jersey until the end of the Tour to become the first Briton to win the race. Froome came in second overall, and the following year went one better and won the Tour after gaining and holding the lead to the end after his victory on stage eight's mountain course from Castres to Ax 3 Domaines.

Under the name Napoli Soccer, a new club was born thanks to film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis; the intention was to ensure the city of Naples was not left without a football team. During the first season down in Serie C1, Napoli narrowly missed out on promotion to Avellino after losing 2–1 in the play-offs. In the 2005–06 season, Napoli went one better and won the Serie C1 championship, securing promotion on 15 April 2006 after a 2–0 win at the Stadio San Paolo to Perugia. Despite the fact that Napoli were playing in such a low division, they remained among clubs with the largest fan base in Italy.

Altrincham Football Club Legends Section Eighteen Profiles 52–54 Altrincham F.C. helping Altrincham to the first of back-to-back Cheshire County League titles, scoring over 120 goals in the league in both seasons. After finishing as runners-up in 1967–68, they were founder members of the Northern Premier League in 1968. They reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy in 1976–77, losing 2–1 to Scarborough in a second replay; the season also saw them apply for election to the Football League for the first time, but they received only 12 votes compared to the 27 received by the elected Wimbledon. The following season they went one better in the FA Trophy, reaching the Wembley final, where they beat Leatherhead 3–1.

Soon after his move to Ninian Park, manager Cyril Spiers moved him to centre forward following the arrival of Mike Tiddy, where his devastating turn of speed immediately produced instant rewards, with 14 goals coming in the 1950–51 season as Cardiff finished in third place in the Second Division. The following season Cardiff went one better finishing in second place, thus gaining promotion to the First Division. During Cardiff's promotion season Grant was top scorer with 26 goals, the first 19 of which were at home. Shortly after Cardiff secured their place in the top flight, Grant's superb form earned him a call up to the England 'B' team for a match against their French equivalents on 22 May 1952.

Annon signed for Isthmian League Premier Division club Enfield in the summer of 1996. He had a successful 1996–97 season, though it ended in disappointment as the "Es" finished six points adrift of champions Yeovil Town, despite themselves finishing 28 points clear of third-place Sutton United. Annon featured in Enfield's run to the first round proper of the FA Cup during the 1998–99 season, taking Second Division club York City to a replay before being knocked out 2–1 at Bootham Crescent. The Es went one better in the 1999–00 season, defeating Second Division club Chesterfield 2–1 at Saltergate in the first round and taking Preston North End to a replay after a 0–0 draw at Deepdale in the second round.

On 1 February 2012, it was confirmed that Heidfeld would join the Rebellion Racing team to contest both the Le Mans 24 Hours and selected races of the FIA World Endurance Championship. In addition to Le Mans, he also raced at the Sebring 12 Hours and Spa 6 Hours, sharing a Lola- Toyota LMP1 car with teammates Neel Jani and Nicolas Prost. The car finished 32nd overall and seventh in class at Sebring after encountering problems, before leading home a Rebellion one-two in the unofficial privateer class at Spa, finishing fifth overall behind the four works Audis. At Le Mans, Heidfeld and his teammates went one better by finishing fourth, splitting the Audis after a fast and problem-free run.

However, they returned to the Premier Division two seasons later after winning the Division One title in 1964–65. This saw the start of a decade-long spell of success for Barton Rovers; their first five seasons back in the Premier Division saw them finish third on four occasions and runners-up once. They then went on to win three successive titles between 1970–71 and 1972–73, and after a third-place finish in 1973–74, they won five consecutive titles. The club also saw success in the FA Vase; in 1975–76 they reached the quarter-finals, and the following season saw them reach the semi-finals, where they lost 3–1 to Sheffield. They went one better in 1977–78, reaching the final, where they lost 2–1 to Blue Star.

However, for competing in the event he secured PDPA Associate Member Status which gave him entry to the UK Open and European Tour Qualifiers as well as the Challenge Tour. He failed to qualify for the UK Open, but in March won the second Challenge Tour event by edging out Alan Tabern 5–4. Meulenkamp reached the last 16 of a PDC Pro Tour event for the first time at the fourth Players Championship where he lost 6–5 to Ian White and went one better later in the year at the final event when he was eliminated in the quarter-finals 6–3 by James Wade. As the second-highest non-qualified European player on the Pro Tour Order of Merit, Meulenkamp played in his first PDC World Championship in 2015.

However, his team found the going tough at the higher level, losing all their matches in 2013 and 2014 to be relegated back to the second-tier competition for 2015. Pupuma scored four tries in the competition to help his team to the final of the competition, where they lost to , and five tries in their 2016 campaign, as his team went one better, beating 39–2 in the final to win promotion back to the Varsity Cup for 2017. He had a stand-out season in that competition, helping Wits to their best-ever finish of fifth, and being named in the Varsity Cup Dream Team at the conclusion of the series, appearing as a replacement in their 19–50 defeat to the South Africa Under-20 team.

Edgar began 2014 outside of the world's top 64 and entered Q School in an attempt to win his place back, coming closest on the third day when he advanced to the last 32 but lost 5–2 to Darron Brown. Edgar only had PDPA Associate Member status for the year ahead which allowed him to compete in UK Open and European Tour qualifiers as well as the Challenge Tour. He qualified for the UK Open and lost 5–3 to Spain's Antonio Alcinas in the second round. Edgar was a runner-up in the first Challenge Tour event of the year when he lost 5–4 to Jamie Robinson, but he went one better in the fourth event by claiming the title with a deciding leg victory over Mark Frost.

Grace went one better than last season in the qualifying rounds of the 2013 Shanghai Masters by winning four matches, concluding with a 5–2 victory over Tom Ford, to reach the main stage of a ranking event for the first time in his career where he was whitewashed 5–0 by Barry Hawkins. He lost his first match in all eight remaining ranking events after this. Grace also had his best form in the early part of the season in the European Tour events by reaching the last 16 of the second event, the Rotterdam Open, where he was beaten 4–1 by Mark Davis. This helped him to finish 53rd on the Order of Merit, which saw Grace earn a fresh two-year place on the tour for the 2014–15 and 2015–16 seasons.

The club's form stuttered, falling out of contention for automatic promotion and very nearly even the play-offs as well, but this time the club were able to rebound and secure a 4th-place finish, setting up a play-off semi final with the side directly above them, Shrewsbury Town. This was taken to penalties after a 2–2 aggregate score (Barnet won 2–1 at Underhill, Shrewsbury won 1–0 at Gay Meadow), with Shrewsbury winning 5–3 on penalties. The following season, 2004–05, with Fairclough at the helm, the Bees went one better than the previous season and were crowned Champions of the Conference Premier and regained their football league status, after amassing an impressive 86 points in the season, and scoring 90 goals with it. When the league gained a second division in 1947 the club were placed in Division One, which they won in 1948–49, a season which saw another FA Cup first round appearance, this time losing 3–0 at Gateshead. Netherfield went one better the following season, beating North Shields 4–3 in the first round, before losing 6–0 at Watford in the second. In the 1952–53 FA Cup the club lost 3–0 to Gainsborough Trinity in a first round replay. They were league runners-up again in 1953–54 and another FA Cup first round appearance the following season ended with a 4–0 defeat to Wrexham in a replay. In the 1955–56 FA Cup the club lost 5–1 at home to Grimsby Town in the first round in front of a record crowd of 5,184.

After serving on the coaching staff under John Redmond following his retirement from playing, Burns formed part of the new management team with Jimmy Kirkwood when Redmond stepped down in March 2011 and the two oversaw a dramatic overhaul of the club and the playing staff with an emphasis on youth development & attractive football. Results were erratic to begin with, but the improvement was remarkable and a title push was well underway in season 2011-12 with the team narrowly missing out on the second promotion spot by one point. The club went one better in 2012-13, securing second place with weeks to spare after a season long title battle with Kilwinning Rangers and promotion back to the Super League was assured. Season 2013-14 saw unprecedented success, as the club were crowned the Super League First Division Champions, Ayrshire Cup winners and were also West of Scotland Cup finalists.

At Monaco, Hill qualified 19th and Edwards 24th, but the race proved to be the most successful yet, the team narrowly missing out on their first Championship points with Hill in seventh and Edwards eighth, again two and three laps down respectively. The team went one better in Sweden after starting 15th and 18th, with a point for Hill as he finished sixth (the last point of his career), with Edwards seventh. Both cars were only one lap adrift of winner Jody Scheckter. Edwards again outqualified Hill at the Dutch Grand Prix as they started 14th and 19th, but the race ended in retirement for both cars, Hill with gearbox failure and Edwards with fuel system failure. The Kings made their Super Rugby debut on 23 February 2013, when they played in a Round Two match against Australian side the at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The Kings won the game 22–10, with Sergeal Petersen scoring two tries and Demetri Catrakilis contributing twelve points with the boot. They lost their next two home matches to the Sharks and the before embarking on their tour of Australasia. They lost both their matches in New Zealand – against the and respectively – but picked up log points in Australia; a try from flanker Cornell du Preez three minutes into injury time and subsequent conversion from Catrakilis helped them secure a 28–all draw against eventual Australian Conference winners the in Canberra and they went one better the following week, beating the 30–27, with a late Wimpie van der Walt try helping them to the win.

Just one season of provincial rugby with Hawke's Bay was all it took to bring Abbott to the attention of New Zealand's Super Rugby franchises and he opted to sign for the Wellington-based ahead of the 2014 Super Rugby season. As a result of his lack of top level experience and the 'Canes having locks such as Jeremy Thrush, James Broadhurst and Blade Thomson on their books, Abbott was restricted to just 2 appearances in his first season of Super Rugby. 2015 saw him feature far more regularly, playing 16 times with the majority of his game time coming from the replacements bench as Broadhurst and Thrush once again owned the starting berths. The Hurricanes were defeated finalists in 2015, going down 14-21 at home to the , however, they went one better in 2016, defeating South African side, the to lift the Super Rugby title.

Booth came late to first- class cricket, not making his debut for his native Yorkshire until he was 24, and was a fringe player in the Yorkshire team until the retirement of Don Brennan at the end of the 1953 season. He was then first choice for Yorkshire in 1954 and in the first half of 1955, but lost his place mid-season to Jimmy Binks. He joined Worcestershire on special registration for the 1956 season, won his county cap in his first season and was then the regular wicket-keeper for the team for the next thirteen seasons, during which time the county achieved greater success than at any time before. The side came second in the County Championship for the first time in 1962 and two years later went one better, winning the title for the first time. They retained the Championship in 1965.

Johnson withdrew from the 1991 Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship and Neil Martin received a Walkover in their last 64 match. Goorjian's first head coaching job came in 1988 when he coached the Eastside Melbourne Spectres. The club twice refused the opportunity before accepting for the 1985–86 season. They finished 20th, and were relegated on goal difference, but thanks to their eighth Isthmian League title, made an immediate return to the higher level, which had been renamed the Football Conference. Under the management of Martin O'Neill, Wycombe won the FA Trophy for the first time in 1991, beating Kidderminster Harriers at Wembley in front of a then record attendance for the competition of 34,842. They followed up with runners-up spot in the 1991–92 season and went one better in 1992–93, adding a second FA Trophy to the Conference title and consequent promotion to the Football League. They marked their debut season in the Football League with promotion to the Second Division via the play-offs; after a fourth-place finish, they beat Carlisle United in the semi-final and came from 2–1 down to beat Preston North End 4–2 in the final.

Georges took up weightlifting aged 18, at the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia she became the first female Commonwealth medalist from Seychelles when she won the bronze medal in the 69 kg weight class, before the event she had been suffering from the chikungunya virus and at her first clean and jerk attempt she fainted, after being treated by the doctors she was fit to continue and went on to win her medal. Four years later at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, she went one better thus becoming the first female from Seychelles to win a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, in the same weight class she was only beaten by Canadian Christine Girard. In June 2012 having failed to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics and also suffering from a bad back she decided to take a break from the sport and in 2013 gave birth to her son Youcas, before returning to the sport and competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, where this time she finished 10th.

2013 German Masters Williams first ranking event of the 2012–13 season was the Wuxi Classic, where he beat Tom Ford and Mark Allen, before losing 3–5 to Marcus Campbell in the quarter-finals. He went one better at the Shanghai Masters by seeing off Mark Davis, Ricky Walden and Joe Perry to face Judd Trump in the semi-finals. Trump was 5–1 up and on a break of 53 for the match, but Williams came back to trail 4–5 before losing the next frame to come up short of completing a comeback, and Trump beat Williams 6–4. Williams then suffered a huge dip in form as he lost in the first round of six successive ranking events; after his defeat to Mark King in the 2012 UK Championship he suggested that he was contemplating retirement. During his string of defeats he did beat Matthew Stevens in the non-ranking Masters from 1–4 down (Stevens also missed a pot for 5–1), but then lost 1–6 to eventual champion Mark Selby.

She went one better to finish fourth in the 2007 World Championships, the following year in Majorca. Just prior to 2008 season, Houvenaghel declared that her focus would be on the 3 km Pursuit Track World Championships and 2008 Olympic Games. During the Track World Championships in Manchester, after inconsistent winter training, she was a part of the gold medal winning women's Team Pursuit. Having also set a personal best, ranking 4th in the Individual Pursuit, her potential to participate successfully at the Olympic Games was evident. On 15 August 2008 Houvenaghel qualified fastest in the qualification round of the Women's 3000m pursuit at the Beijing Olympics and went on to win the silver medal in the final, losing out on the gold to her team mate by 2 seconds. She won silver again in the same event at the 2009 Track World Championships in Poland, losing the final by 2 seconds after beating her opponent in the qualifying heats. She retained her World Championship title in the Women's Team Pursuit by qualifying fastest during the qualification ride and winning the final.

The 2011–12 National League 2 North was the third season (twenty-fifth overall) of the fourth tier (north) of the English domestic rugby union competitions since the professionalised format of the second division was introduced. The league system was 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and additional bonus points being awarded for scoring 4 or more tries and/or losing within 7 points of the victorious team. In terms of promotion the league champions would go straight up into National League 1 while the runners up would have a one-game playoff against the runners up from National League 2 South (at the home ground of the club with the superior league record) for the final promotion place. After two years of missing out on promotion via the playoffs, Loughborough Students went one better and won the league title outright, being easily the best side in the division and finishing 22 points clear of the rest of the pack to gain promotion to the 2012–13 National League 1.

Thornton qualified for the 2008 UK Open via the Pub qualifiers and then went on to switch to the PDC after withdrawing from the Scottish team for the Europe Cup, stating that his first goal was to get into the top 16 of the PDC Order of Merit which would guarantee his place in all the major tournaments. At the UK Open he lost 9–6 to Alan Tabern in the last 32. Thornton qualified for the Las Vegas Desert Classic losing again in the last 32 this time 6–5 against Adrian Lewis, but went one better at the World Grand Prix when he beat Peter Manley 2–1 in sets in the first round before being defeated 3–2 by Andy Hamilton in the last 16. His good start to his career in the PDC continued at the European Championship where he saw off John Part, Mensur Suljović and Ronnie Baxter to advance to the semi-finals for the first time and a meeting with Phil Taylor. Thornton averaged 102.12 in the match but Taylor averaged 113.33 as he won 11–7.

Allegedly, Nuneaton Borough offered a sizeable transfer fee for Evans early in the season and with Barnet under financial pressures like many clubs in the renamed Gola League Barry Fry had no choice but to accept. However Evans refused to leave Barnet so the deal was called off, further adding to his cult following among Barnet fans. As a result of his popularity, fans created a chant, "Born is the King of Underhill", which was adapted from the hymn The First Noel. Upon scoring, he would usually perform a military-style salute to the crowd. In 1986-87 Nicky's 29 goals helped Barnet finish second in the GM conference behind Scarborough. He went one better for the 1987–88 season scoring 30 goals, 12 of which were in the space of 14 days in September 1987. Shortly after the 7–0 win at Loakes Park Wycombe (where Nicky scored 4) it was revealed that he had won second place in Wycombe's Player of the Month due to numerous Bees fans sabotaging the voting slips issued that evening. Nicky was sold to Wycombe Wanderers in March 1989 for a transfer fee of £32,000.

After a brief spell in the mid 2000s in the early days of the PDC which involved going around different Greene King pubs to qualify for events, Thomas rejoined the 'reformed' PDC in 2013 and hit his first competitive nine-dart finish whilst playing in the second UK Open Qualifier against Peter Hudson. He qualified for the UK Open in Bolton for the first time at the first time of asking through the UK Open Order Of Merit and lost out to Conan Whitehead in the second round. Thomas' best result of his career to date came at the 2014 Dutch Darts Masters where he beat Wayne Jones 6–1 and Steve Beaton 6–5, before he lost 6–4 to Mervyn King in the last 16 earning £2,000 in the process. Thomas matched this run at the sixth Players Championship of the year by beating Peter Hudson, Andy Hamilton and Ronnie Baxter, but was then eliminated 6–4 by Kyle Anderson. Another last 16 defeat came in 2015 at the second Players Championship event, 6–5 at the hands of James Wade, but Thomas went one better at the fourth event by reaching his first PDC quarter-final.

Derby started the new century with a sixth- place finish and appointed its first full-time manager in Harry Newbould, the first time a single man was in sole control of first team affairs. Newbould had previously served as secretary, and combined the role with his new post. Sha Tin Racecourse, where Win Bright recorded his two biggest victories in 2019 As in the previous year, Win Bright began his season in the Nakayama Kimpai and went one better than in 2018 as came with a strong late run on the outside to take the lead inside the last 100 metres and won by half a length from Stay Foolish at odds of 7.4/1. In the following month he started at odds of 6/1 as he attempted to repeat his 2018 success in the Nakayama Kinen, facing ten rivals including Deirdre, Lucky Lilac, Epoca d'Oro, Stelvio and Suave Richard. After racing in fourth place for most of the way Win Bright stayed on strongly in the straight and won by a neck and a head from Lucky Lilac and Stelvio. For his next start Win Bright joined Lys Gracieux and Deirdre in a three-horse Japanese challenge for the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2000 metres at Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong and started a 47/1 outsider in a thirteen-runner field. The home contingent included Exultant (Hong Kong Vase), Glorious Forever (2018 Hong Kong Cup), Pakistan Star (winner of the race in 2018) and Time Warp (2017 Hong Kong Cup).

In the 2007–08 season, Perry reached two quarter-finals: in the Grand Prix (losing 3–5 to Gerard Greene) and the Welsh Open (with victories over John Parrott 5–2, Peter Ebdon 5–1 and Stuart Bingham 5–2 before Shaun Murphy beat him 5–0), as well as the last 16 of the UK Championship, where he beat Neil Robertson 9–6 after being 3–5 down, before losing 2–9 to Marco Fu. He followed that up by reaching the semi-finals of the world championship, where he was knocked out by Ali Carter 15–17. These results ensured him a return to the prestigious top 16 of the rankings (at No. 12, his highest ranking ever), meaning automatic qualification for major tournaments. He also finished the 2007/2008 season on another high, by winning the Championship League, to qualify for the Betfred Premier League for 2008. He has said he feels that he is learning to cope with the high pressure of major tournaments, having had more experience over the last season. Perry opened 2008–09 with three last-sixteen runs, leaving him inside the top eight of the provisional rankings. However he went one better in the 2008 UK Championship beating Ronnie O'Sullivan 9–5 having trailed by 3–5, in one of the best victories of his career.

The club finished bottom of the Northern League again in 1960–61, 1963–64 and 1965–66, but were runners-up in 1970–71. After the league gained a second division in 1982, they were relegated to Division Two at the end of the 1983–84 season. However, a third-place finish in 1987–88 saw them promoed back to Division One. After three seasons in Division One, Durham were relegated back to Division Two at the end of the 1990–91 season, which had seen them finish bottom of the table.

2012 Paul Hunter Classic Murphy at the 2013 German Masters Murphy began the 2012–13 season ranked number six. The first tournament for Murphy was the Wuxi Classic, where he lost in the first round 1–5 against Ken Doherty. Murphy's next tournament was the Six-red World Championship, where he finished first in Group E with four wins out of five matches and advanced to the knock-out stage. There he defeated James Wattana, Barry Hawkins, Dominic Dale and Judd Trump to reach the final, but lost 4–8 against Mark Davis. He then reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Goldfields Open, but lost 4–5 against Peter Ebdon. Murphy went one better in the next two ranking tournaments, as he reached the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters and the International Championship, but lost 3–6 against John Higgins and 5–9 against Neil Robertson respectively. Murphy than reached the final of the 2012 UK Championship courtesy of two tight victories. The first against teenager Luca Brecel in the quarter-finals, after Brecel twice had the chance to pot the final pink and black to win the match, then against Ali Carter in which Murphy recovered from 4–8 down and 0–32 in points behind in the deciding frame to win 9–8.

Having entered the league in 1986, the Miners were immediately a force to be reckoned with. With Brian Goorjian at the helm, Ballarat reached the ultimate goal, with the South Conference Championship in 1987, only a year after their introduction. Goorjian departed at the end of the 1987 season and was replaced by Al Westover, who subsequently took the team to a Conference three-peat from 1989 to 1991, taking the South Conference for the first two years before following it up with the East Conference when moving across conferences in 1991. Westover was honoured with the inaugural Coach of the Year award in 1990 for his leadership with Ballarat throughout those three years. The Miners accomplishments continued after the departure of Westover at the end of 1991, with Eric Lowe taking the side to conference runners-up in 1992 before Brendan Joyce took over in 1993. In Joyce's first season, the Miners went through the regular season with a stellar record of 20–4, eventually losing the Conference Semi-final and finishing second overall. But the following two years they again achieved the ultimate success with two CBA National Championships with win/loss ratios of 18–4 and 19–3. Joyce went one better than Westover, collecting consecutive Coach of the Year awards for his leadership over 1994 and 1995.
