FLW was founded in 1979 as Operation Bass when Mike Whitaker of Gilbertsville, Kentucky, a former high school teacher and football coach turned electronics salesman, started conducting one-day, weekend bass tournaments. "Live role- playing started in England, where there are a lot of medieval reenactment societies," explains Ivey about NERO, "but what we do is a fantasy game." Overall, the installment was given a rating of 8, or "great", tying it for the best rated episode of the show at the time of the review; it was rated as being equal to the preceding episode, "Weekend Warriors". In his review for TV Squad, writer Richard Keller presented a favorable view toward the episode, beginning by pointing out how the episode put " a little twist on who committed the crime". Keller liked how Gus seemed to take a more dominant role, pointing out the Dulé Hill "continued to grow into his character" and "seemed to have a bit more confidence". He presented mixed feelings towards Roday's performance, calling it "fine as usual, but not as laugh out-loud funny".

Crispin Boyer of Electronic Gaming Monthly applauded the draw distance, while Computer and Video Games called it "The most intense flight experience to ever grace a console". Next Generation said that it would "keep a whole bunch of weekend warriors strapped in to the TV", while IGN labeled it "one of the best flight simulators ever to come to the PlayStation" and said that Namco went "all out" with its visuals. The four reviewers of Electronic Gaming Monthly felt the game's strongest point was its variety, with multiple planes to choose from and unlock and widely varying mission objectives. Publications commended the quality of the gameplay for its fast-pace and variety in missions, although AllGame and Computer and Video Games felt it became "monotonous" and tiring after a while.

According to Nielsen Media Research, "Who Ya Gonna Call?" was viewed by approximately 4.80 million people in its original American broadcast. The episode earned a 1.5 rating/4 share in the 18–49 demographic, meaning that on average 1.5 percent of all television-equipped households were tuned into the installment at any given moment, while 4 percent of households watching TV were tuned into it during the time slot. The installment was the sixth most watched cable program on its air date, falling behind its lead-in, Monk, which was seen by about 5.6 million people and placed fourth. The episode's ratings were a slight improvement from the previous episode, "Weekend Warriors", which was viewed by 4.76 million people, and was also better than the following episode, which was viewed by approximately 4.6 million people.

Cold War battlegrounds took naval reservists to Korea, where a massive mobilization of "Weekend Warriors" filled out the complements of ships pulled from mothballs and in some cases sent carriers to sea with almost their entire embarked air groups consisting of Reserve squadrons. Other calls came during the Berlin Crisis and Vietnam, and with the defense build-up of the 1980s, presided over by Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, a naval reservist, the Naval Reserve not only expanded, but also took steps towards greater interoperability with the active component with respect to equipment. Yet, the divisions between the active and reserve cultures remained distinct. This began to change in the 1990s as over 21,000 Naval Reservists supported the Persian Gulf War's Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, which coincided with the ongoing collapse of the Soviet Union.

In 1961, shortly after the Bay of Pigs invasion, another world crisis with the Soviets looms in Berlin. A motley group of Hollywood actors, writers, stuntmen, makeup artists, and various studio personnel have avoided being drafted into regular military service: The misfit group, led by Hollywood screenwriter Vince Tucker (Chris Lemmon), have joined the California Air National Guard's air transport wing, "the Fighting 73rd", volunteering one weekend a month as "weekend warriors" in order to keep themselves at home. They run afoul of visiting Congressman Ernest W. Balljoy (Graham Jarvis) when he comes upon one of their questionable and tasteless pranks while touring the airbase. In retaliation, to remove them from his district, he announces in a national press release that the 73rd is ready to be called up for active Air Force duty to meet the looming Soviet threat in Berlin (in actuality, Balljoy will see to it that they are transferred to the isolated Pacific island where the U.S. stores its atomic warheads).
