Tower walls are reinforced with square and octagonal buttresses that taper abruptly with generous weatherings at transitional points and terminate in pinnacles, some with slender colonettes abutting chamfered edges, with ribbed, stepped, or gable caps. These buttresses are accented by heavy weatherings in lighter coloured stone (creating visual contrast while drawing attention to the points of stress on the building), and topped with pinnacles, thus emphasizing their massiveness, structural function, and verticality. They provide spatial rhythm on the east and west facades. A careful balance between horizontal and vertical elements can be observed throughout the interior and exterior of the church.

The church building is a rectangular structure, built on a raised basement, that follows a basilica plan. The exterior is composed of red brick, and the early Gothic Revival style exhibits Tudor Revival elements. The building is five bays in length and divided by buttresses capped with white stone weatherings. It is also three bays wide.

Each gable end has a pair of brick chimneys with stepped weatherings. The property includes a smokehouse dated to about 1760. During the American Civil War, it was the residence of Thomas Hardy, whose daughter Pinckney Hardy, became the mother of General Douglas MacArthur. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Gov. George Truitt House is a historic home located near Magnolia, Kent County, Delaware. It was built about 1796, and consists of a -story, stuccoed brick main house, with a -story braced frame wing. The house is in the late- Georgian style. It features a gable roof with an interesting modillioned box cornice and an exterior chimney with sloped weatherings and corbelled lip.

Westerhouse House is a historic home located near Bridgetown, Northampton County, Virginia. It dates to about 1700, and is a small, one-story, four-bay, farmhouse with a steep gable roof and asymmetrical elevations. It features an exterior end chimney with a heavy pyramidal base, long sloping tiled weatherings and squat free-standing stack. and Accompanying photo It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Hurstville is a historic plantation house located at Kilmarnock, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built about 1777, and is a 1 1/2-story, three-bay, double pile brick dwelling with a steep gable roof. It measures 28 feet by 30 feet, and features exterior end chimneys with two sets of tiled weatherings and a beveled water table. Also on the property are the contributing Ball family cemetery and the site of the Cress Field dwelling.

Sunnyside, also known as the Duke House, is a historic home located at Charlottesville, Virginia. The original section was built about 1800, as a 1 1/2-story, two room log dwelling. It was expanded and remodeled in 1858, as a Gothic Revival style dwelling after Washington Irving's Gothic Revival home, also called Sunnyside. The house features scroll-sawn bargeboards, arched windows and doors, and a fieldstone chimney with stepped weatherings and capped corbelled stacks topped with two octagonal chimney pots.

It stands at approximately 60 foot with each pier consisting of eight buttresses with weatherings rising to form five stages with pointed openings piercing the 4 upper stages. Batter of about 1 in 100. In 1882 the piers were heightened with a slightly cruder, tapering, sixth stage and iron girders were used to replace Brunel's timber trestles. The two-track railroad of 1882 and later carried on rivetted plate steel girders with steel guardrails and refuges to the north side.
