As the Internet grew in reach and maturity, companies started to evaluate how to leverage it for private corporate communications. During the early 2000s, application delivery over the WAN became an important topic of research and commercial innovation. Over the next decade, the increasing computing power made it possible to create software-based appliances that were able to analyze traffic and make informed decisions in real time, making it possible to create large-scale overlay networks over the public Internet that could replicate all the functionality of legacy WANs, at a fraction of the cost. SD-WAN combines several technologies to create full-fledged private networks, with the ability to dynamically share network bandwidth across the connection points.

If Access database performance over VPN or WAN suffers, then a client using Remote Desktop Protocol (such as Microsoft Terminal Services) can provide an effective solution. Access databases linked to SQL Server or to Access Data Projects work well over VPNs and WANs. In the early 2000s, research in both the private and public sectors turned to improving the end-to-end throughput of TCP, and the target of the first proprietary WAN optimization solutions was the Branch WAN. In recent years, however, the rapid growth of digital data, and the concomitant needs to store and protect it, has presented a need for DC2DC WAN optimization. For example, such optimizations can be performed to increase overall network capacity utilization, meet inter-datacenter transfer deadlines, or minimize average completion times of data transfers. As another example, private inter- datacenter WANs can benefit optimizations for fast and efficient geo- replication of data and content, such as newly computed machine learning models or multimedia content.

There are some similarities between SD-WAN and WAN optimization, the name given to the collection of techniques used to increase data-transfer efficiencies across WANs. The goal of each is to accelerate application delivery between branch offices and data centers, but SD-WAN technology focuses additionally on cost savings and efficiency, specifically by allowing lower cost network links to perform the work of more expensive leased lines, whereas WAN Optimization focuses squarely on improving packet delivery. An SD-WAN utilizing virtualization techniques assisted with WAN Optimization traffic control allows network bandwidth to dynamically grow or shrink as needed. SD-WAN technology and WAN optimization can be used separately or together, and some SD-WAN vendors are adding WAN optimization features to their products.

Any other lost segments will have to wait in the WTCP's buffer until the first one is confirmed to have been received. There are times when packets will sit in WTCP's buffer for many milliseconds. In order to avoid having either TCP end host go into its congestion avoidance mode, (due to TCP looking at a segment's timestamp and determining that it took a long time to arrive, therefore wrongly assuming it's due to congestion) WTCP uniquely hides the time spent by the packets at the WTCP proxy, so that the RTT estimation is not affected. In one study on WTCP's performance in Wireless WANs, WTCP showed an improvement of 20–200% over comparable TCP algorithms such as New Reno, Vegas, and Snoop.

In 1942, the Board of Fire Commissioners of NSW noted in their annual report:Annual Report for 1942, p. 3. The Woman's Fire Auxiliary was inaugurated in June 1940, enabling women to assist in the war effort. Lady Wakehurst (wife of the Governor of NSW) was a driving force in the formation of the WFA, and was subsequently elected president. The first intake of members were recruited from the WANS (Women's Australian National Service) and among other things, were put through an eight-week course in Air Raid Procedures, in which they were instructed in such matters as: incendiary bombs; fires in the home; rescue work; first aid; operating chemical fire extinguishers; operating fire alarms; station procedures; and fire station watchroom duties.

Unlike X.25, whose designers expected analog signals with a relatively high chance of transmission errors, Frame Relay is a fast packet switching technology operating over links with a low chance of transmission errors (usually practically lossless like PDH), which means that the protocol does not attempt to correct errors. When a Frame Relay network detects an error in a frame, it simply drops that frame. The end points have the responsibility for detecting and retransmitting dropped frames. (However, digital networks offer an incidence of error extraordinarily small relative to that of analog networks.) Frame Relay often serves to connect local area networks (LANs) with major backbones, as well as on public wide-area networks (WANs) and also in private network environments with leased lines over T-1 lines.

The Library System of Lancaster County (LSLC) is a federated system which serves 519,462 residents in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It comprises 14 member libraries, three branches and a bookmobile. LSLC was established in April 1987 to provide well-coordinated, countywide services and cooperative programs to assist member libraries in meeting the diverse needs of its residents. The LSLC support and centralized services include (public Internet access, a shared online public access catalog (OPAC) system, subscription to database- and online homework-help research services, consulting services, continuing education training in internal library operations (including budgeting and accounting), governance, business-information services, youth services, public relations, assistance with countywide programs and services, technology support (including WANs – wide area networks – and LANs with servers for managing telecommunications), web hosting, email, calendars, the catalog, circulation, headquarters and library PCs and peripherals, training and security.
