Balkema quickly established his name by publishing specialist books which had often been refused by the more established publishing houses. These included such works as the Hertzog Prize- winning Die Vrou op die Skuit by Elise Muller (1957). Before long, many South African writers began to approach Balkema of their accord to request that he publish their work. Many of her novels were semi-biographical and these often proved popular. Apparently her readers identified with the characters, leading to filming of two novels. The first film was Vrou uit die nag (Woman emerging from the night) by the Christian film company Carfo, and the well-known Plekkie in die son (Place in the sun) which had the theme of a leprosy shelter. She is considered to be a thorough researcher of the topics of her novels, who doesn't start writing unless this first phase in complete.

In the same year the television channel SABC2 aired a documentary about her life and career, and in the next year this same channel filmed and broadcast Diva to the nation. In a prolific year (1997) Strydom toured Belgium with Vrou by die Spieël and State of the Heart, staged the same works at arts festivals in South Africa, and also created the cabaret 'n Vuur gevang in Glas using texts by Hennie Aucamp. She performed 'n Vuur gevang in Glas at the KKNK and also released a CD recording of its songs. Further, she performed all four of her one woman shows alternately over a period of three weeks at the State Theatre in Pretoria. Erebus was at Hull on 2 October, having just detained the Hopper, Somanberg, and Maria Sofie Guhlstorff, from Saint Petersburg. On 17 December 1811, Erebus captured the Danish sloop Fuldmannen, A. Anderson, master. In 1812 Erebus was again employed on convoy escort in the Baltic under Saumarez. On 12 May Erebus, under the command of Commander George Brine, the Danish sloop Snelvegen.

Johan has also written "Juliet" performed by Steve Hofmeyr, "Net voor die storm kom" performed by Theuns Jordaan, "'n Vrou wild dit hoor" by Bobby Van Jaarsveld co-winner of the Ghoema 2013 "Song of the Year" award and "Melanie" performed by his Eden team colleague Jay (Jaco du Plessis) winning the Huisgenoot Tempo award for "Song of the Year" in 2011. With Coleske Artists, Johan wrote tens of chart topping songs and produced the Afrikaans is Groot compilation albums series. Musicals and films Vorster also co-wrote the musical score for the locally produced musicals, Ons vir Jou, Jock of the bushveld and Shaka Zulu – The Musical, a theatre piece about the rise and fall of the legendary Shaka Zulu, that got staged in the Nelson Mandela Theatre and the State Theatre in Pretoria in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He wrote most of the musical score for the South African Afrikaans film Platteland released in November 2011, featuring, Lianie May, Bok vam Blerk, Karlien and Jay.
