Natural wine is mostly produced by small, independent vineries, and although I wouldn't be surprised to see it in supermarkets before long, it's simply not possible to produce it in the same quantities as the regular stuff.

Polgigga (or Poljigga) is mentioned in 1327 as Pensiger, meaning head of a stream called Syger. "Syger" in Cornish means lazy, in this case a slow moving stream. Alternatively "pol" is Cornish for pool and "legegas" is Cornish for heifer, referring to the small pond near the Vineries.

Many residents of modern Ramian are from the Shia Turkmen tribe of Qara-Eli (Garaili/Geraili). Genetically, they are a mix of Turkmens and Keraites.

The Kaiserstuhl and its surrounding area is a region of intense wine growing. Wines from the Kaiserstuhl have achieved an excellent reputation which has by now become international. The bigger part of the available area is covered with vineyards. They are either run as parts of winemaking cooperatives or are private property or property of private vineries.

The villas style, locations, room numbers and proximity to a lake or ocean were manners of displaying the owners wealth. Villas were also centres of production, and Gallo-Roman villa appear to have been closely associated with vineries and wine production. The owners were probably a combination of local Gallic elites who became quickly romanised after the conquest, as well as Romans and Italians who wished to exploit rich local resources. The villas would have been the centre of complex relationships with the local area.

On 6 November 1819, Baring ordered from the Birmingham ironmasters Jones & Clark two metallic pine houses to be built in the new walled kitchen garden on the opposite side of the lake about half mile south east of The Grange. He later ordered peach houses and vineries. In 1820, Alexander Baring commissioned Robert Smirke, a pupil of George Dance, to build the single storey west wing. He increased the size of the park, extended the flower gardens, and planted many ornamental trees, such as the cedars which survive today.

Rear view of Torrance's home, St. Antoine Hall, built in 1818 In 1818, Torrance built a 42-room mansion, St. Antoine Hall, off the then fashionable Saint Antoine Street. The house was renowned for its acres of gardens, conservatories, vineries, and orchards, enjoyed by Torrance whose hobby was gardening - he was also an incorporator of the Horticultural Society of Montreal in 1849. St. Antoine Hall was also famous for its high brick walls and the great gate which according to family tradition closed firmly at 10 p.m. Torrance's granddaughter, Evelyn (Galt) Springett (a god-daughter of Sir George-Étienne Cartier) remembered it as "a lovely place... great shady trees, and in summer the horse chestnuts were alive with humming birds".
