The original plot of FLCL is hard to get a handle on without multiple viewings and a Pepe Silvia-style organizational chart, but basically 12-year-old Naota Nandaba discovers he has a giant robot inside his head when a mysterious woman named Haruko (Kari Wahlgren) drives by him on a moped and hits him with a guitar.
Screenwriters Phillips and Scott Silver have crafted a tragic downfall of an everyday man with mental health problems — one who, crucially, tries consistently to reach out for help  — and their adapted screenplay is not your usual superhero CGI-marathon, but a layered and thoughtful character study that explores adult themes and offers a lot of worth on repeat viewings.

He struck difficult tricks with such seeming effortlessness that it requires repeated viewings—maybe two, or even three or four—to register just how fucking fast he is skating, how high he is snapping, how tall the ledges and rails he is blessing are, how truly ridiculous every trick is, a man launching himself with a blink-and-you-miss-it savagery before alighting like a premier danseur.
