The Butler Relays were a prestigious American Track and Field competition, founded by track coach Herman Phillips who won three NCAA quartermile championships and was a member of the 1928 U.S. Olympic 1,600 meter gold medal relay team. The event annually showcased 350–400 athletes representing 20–30 colleges and universities. From an attendance of 3,500, the games grew to attract over 10,000 spectators to Butler (Hinkle) Fieldhouse each March. The college's fraternities and sororities vied in yearly ticket sales, parade float, house decoration, and Relay Queen competitions.

Miss Earth 2012 Tereza Fajksová Czech Miss was established in 2005 and is organized and produced by Michaela Maláčová, Miss Czechoslovakia 1991 and director of Miss Marketing s.r.o. From 2005-09, the pageant selected a winner to represent the country in Miss Universe, and a first runner up participated in the Miss Earth pageant. In 2010, Czech Miss and its rival pageant, Miss Czech Republic () merged under the direction of Maláčová, and two winners were selected. The winner of Czech Miss 2010 competed in Miss Universe 2010 and Czech Miss World 2010 vied in Miss World 2010, while the first runner up competed in Miss Earth 2010 pageant.

Shortly after Emperor Ruizong's return to the throne, Wei Anshi was removed from his post as Shizhong and made an advisor to Li Longji, now crown prince, as well as Zuo Pushe (), one of the heads of the executive bureau (now named Shangshu Sheng ()). As of 711, discord began to develop between Li Longji and Princess Taiping, as they vied in their struggle to influence Emperor Ruizong. Traditional historians believed that Princess Taiping was beginning to gather a faction of officials around her, intending to find fault with Li Longji as to remove him from being crown prince. She tried to include Wei in her faction, repeatedly having her son-in-law Tang Jun () invite him to her mansion, but he repeatedly declined.

This formed the acropolis of the ancient city, which in its flourishing times covered the slopes of Mount Ampelus down to the shore. The aqueduct cut through the hill by Polycrates may still be seen. New York's 1st congressional district Demos vied in 2010 for the Republican nomination to compete for the congressional seat of Democrat Tim Bishop on Long Island in New York State in the November 2010 election, coming in second in the primary. His three-way primary included Christopher Nixon Cox, a grandson of Richard Nixon and son of the state GOP chairman, and businessman Randy Altschuler. Cox's father-in-law to-be, John Catsimatidis, the Gristedes supermarket and oil magnate, raised ethical issues about Demos' time at the SEC, saying he was accused of improprieties, and the subject of a related disciplinary complaint. Demos provided a letter reflecting that he was cleared of the complaint. John Jay LaValle, Suffolk County Republican chairman, opined in February 2010 that Demos was a qualified and "extraordinary" candidate for the Republican Party's nomination to be a congressman in the 1st District from eastern Long Island.

In 1873, a newspaper report about Easter at Christ Church said "More than half the congregation were ladies, who displayed all the gorgeous and marvelous articles of dress,... and the appearance of the body of the church thus vied in effect and magnificence with the pleasant and tasteful array of flowers which decorated the chancel." By the 1880s, the Easter parade had become a vast spectacle of fashion and religious observance, famous in New York and around the country. It was an after-church cultural event for the well-to-do—decked out in new and fashionable clothing, they would stroll from their own church to others to see the impressive flowers (and to be seen by their fellow strollers). People from the poorer and middle classes would observe the parade to learn the latest trends in fashion. By 1890, the annual procession held an important place on New York's calendar of festivities and had taken on its enduring designation as "the Easter parade".

Vittorio and Blueberry vied in a hard competition for her affections, the former in order to succeed Cochise. It actually was Blueberry's ill-conceived attempt to impress Chini, when he and several Navajo friends ambushed a stage coach carrying "Wild Bill" Hickok, that alerted US authorities to the fact that the alleged would-be assassin of President Grant was still alive, causing the hunt for the former lieutenant to resume, eventually endangering Cochise's tribe as well. Chini once met Chihuahua Pearl in person and exhibited jealousy, as she sensed the attraction between her and Blueberry. She was previously critically wounded by scalp hunter Gideon "Eggskull" O'Bannon when she tried to help Blueberry escape from him, but survived her wounds with the help from a US Army surgeon. She played an important role during the escape of her tribe to Mexico in the winter of 1871/1872, and eventually threw in her lot with Vittorio.

In 1940 Croft was ennobled, and appointed by Winston Churchill as Under-Secretary of State for War, a post he would hold until July 1945. Croft in his memoirs said of The Blitz: "Every class of Londoner responded defiantly to the long, long period of attack and from the Royal Family to the Coster or Dustman all vied in showing their contempt of danger and sustained each other through bomb raids, “doodles” and rockets to the end ... London is a grand city with a big heart".Croft, p. 349. Croft recognised the need to improve morale in the Army and wrote on 12 August 1940 of the need for education and entertainment to be provided to servicemen on a big scale: travelling cinemas, technical classes, correspondence courses, and morale-boosting stories of the Empire and regimental traditions.
