A site-directed mutagenesis experiment that improves the vestigal 3'-5' exonuclease activity by a factor of 2 has been reported, but it was never reported whether doing so decreases the error rate. Following a similar line of thought, chimera proteins have been made by cherry-picking domains from E. coli, Taq, and T. neapolitana polymerase I. Swapping out the vestigal domain for a functional one from E. coli created a protein with proof-reading ability but a lower optimal temperature and low thermostability. Versions of the polymerase without the 5'-3' exonuclease domain has been produced, among which Klentaq or the Stoffel fragment are best known. The complete lack of exonuclease activity make these variants suitable for primers that exhibit secondary structure as well as for copying circular molecules.

The term spur is sometimes used to describe the pelvic spur, vestigal limbs found in primitive snakes, such as boas and pythons and in the striped legless lizard. The spurs primarily serve as holdfasts during mating. As these form at the terminal end of the limb, they may properly be claws rather than true spurs. The shortarse feelerfish (Bathymicrops brevianalis) is a deepsea tripod fish of the genus Bathymicrops. It is so named because of its almost non-existent eyes (which do exist, just are small and vestigal) and short anal fins. The Latin species name brevianalis means "short anus". The "Sampling the Abyss" project found the fish again in 2017 off the coast of Australia for the first time in 140 years.

Like other stingrays, members of the family Potamotrygonidae have a venomous stinger on the tail (although it is harmless and vestigal or even absent in Heliotrygon). There are generally one or two stingers, and they are periodically shed and replaced. They are some of the most feared freshwater fishes in the Neotropical region because of the injuries they can cause. In Colombia alone, more than 2,000 injuries are reported per year.

The Lecithocerinae are a subfamily of small moths in the family Lecithoceridae. They are found worldwide, but most species occur in South Asia. The subfamily is characterized by the male genitalia with a bridge-like structure connecting the tegumen and the valva, and the uncus almost always is vestigal with two lobes at the dorsal base, only exceptionally united into a broad plate, but never as a thorn or spine. Older classifications have treated the family Lecithoceridae as subfamily Lecithocerinae of Gelechiidae.

As in other baleen whales, the skull is wide and flat. The skull, along the sides, has several narrow, straight grooves–eight in total–and there are several foramina in the skull used as passage for blood vesselsthough not as many as modern baleen whales–which indicate it had baleen in its mouth. The skull contains several tooth sockets, but no teeth were discovered; it is possible these sockets were vestigal and held no teeth, or the teeth naturally fell out over the course of the animal's life. The blowhole was located midway along the snout, near the position of eyes.

For the L≠ would use only about six miles of the BRWY (to Hainesburg Junction) and the NYS&W; about nine miles (to a point called Columbia Junction, located about where Interstate 80 crosses Columbia Lake today), with the remainder of the route to Delaware being run as a vestigal branchline. But, perhaps this was Blair's plan all along. Blair would die in 1899 at the age of 97. A dozen years after Blair's death, in 1911, Blairstown would receive a second train station, located about a mile or so up the hill from Blair's station.

While the starling has a moderately large and strong furcula for a bird of its size, there are many species where the furcula is completely absent, for instance scrubbirds, some toucans and New World barbets, some owls, some parrots, turacos, and mesites. These birds are still fully capable of flying. They also have close relatives where the furcula is vestigal, reduced to a thin strap of ossified ligament, seemingly purposeless. Other species have evolved the furcula in the opposite direction, where it has increased in size and become too stiff or massive to act as a spring.

While most famous forms such as Gomphotherium had long lower jaws with tusks, which is the ancestral condition for the group, after these forms became extinct, the surviving gomphotheres had short jaws with either vestigal or no lower tusks (brevirostrine), looking very similar to modern elephants, an example of parallel evolution. Beginning after 2 Mya, they were gradually replaced by mammoths and mastodons in most of North America, with the last two genera, Cuvieronius persisting in southern North America and Notiomastodon having a wide range over most of South America, until the end of the Pleistocene. The name "gomphothere" comes from Ancient Greek (), "peg, pin; wedge; joint" plus (), "beast".

Booth's first single, "Wishful Thinkin'" (backed with "I Think I Can") and album, Country '67 was released under the stage name "Johnny Booth" by Universal City Records in 1967. It featured a cover of Engelbert Humperdinck's "There Goes My Everything", a version of which had been released months earlier by Ray Price, one of Booth's longtime influences. The album, produced by Cliffie Stone, retains the vestigal sound of Rockabilly that country music was moving away from at that time, ironically toward the softer sound then being pushed by artists such as Price. When his first album did not yield a chart position, Booth formed a band called Modern Country in 1968 and performed for a time in Las Vegas, Nevada before moving to Los Angeles, California.

The genome sequence of another organism, the chlorarachniophyte Bigelowiella natans indicates that its nucleomorph is probably the vestigal nucleus of a green alga, whereas the nucleomorph in G. theta probably came from a red alga. The B. natans genome is smaller than that of G. theta, with about 373 Kbp and contains 293 protein- coding genes as compared to the 465 genes in G. theta. B. natans also only has 17 genes that code for plastid proteins, again fewer than G. theta. Comparisons between the two organisms have shown that B. natans contains significantly more introns (852) than G. theta (17). B. natans also had smaller introns, ranging from 18-21 bp, whereas G. theta’s introns ranged from 42-52 bp.

So far, only two monophyletic groups of organisms are known to contain plastids with a vestigal nucleus or nucleomorph: the cryptomonads of the supergroup Chromista and the chlorarachniophytes of the supergroup Rhizaria, both of which have examples of sequenced nucleomorph genomes. Studies of the genomic organization and of the molecular phylogeny have shown that the nucleomorph of the cryptomonads used to be the nucleus of a red alga, whereas the nucleomorph of the chlorarchniophytes was the nucleus of a green alga. In both groups of organisms the plastids originate from engulfed photoautotrophic eukaryotes. Of the two known plastids that contain nucleomorphs, both have four membranes, the nucleomorph residing in the periplastidial compartment, evidence of being engulfed by a eukaryote through phagocytosis.

The signal modulates a carrier by vestigal sideband modulation (a version of amplitude modulation) , where an increase in the video modulating signal produces a decrease in the carrier amplitude, called "negative modulation". When there is no modulating signal, the carrier has the full level and when there is a modulating video frequency (VF) signal the level of IF is lower. Since the level when transmitting a black scene is lower than the white level, the level of carrier when transmitting black is higher than the level of carrier when transmitting white. Carrier modulated by 1 Volt VF. (1 volt corresponds to white.) In this illustration, the carrier frequency is much lower than would practically be used, relative to the video signal frequency.

Metro Light Rail, the most heavily utilized light rail system in the United States, serving Los Angeles According to the American Public Transportation Association, of the roughly 30 cities with light rail systems in the United States, the light rail systems in six of them (Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon), San Diego, and San Francisco) achieve more than 30 million unlinked passenger transits per year. The United States has a number of light rail systems in its mid-sized to large cities. In the oldest legacy systems, such as in Boston, Cleveland, Newark, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco, the light rail is vestigal from the first-generation streetcar systems of the 19th and early 20th centuries, but were spared the fate of other streetcar systems due to these systems having some grade separation from traffic and high ridership. A number of second-generation light rail systems were inaugurated in the 1980s starting with San Diego in 1981, with a few more built in the 1990s, and many more opened in lower density cities since the early 2000s.
