In Nymphaea lotus, the tiger lotus, leaf variegations appear under intense illumination.

The dorsum bears large, scattered tubercles. Dorsal colouration is uniformly grey, but the upper eyelids are yellowish-grey. The thighs have diffuse crossbands. The ventral parts are cream with greyish variegations.

Its forewings have green and grayish variegations. The hindwings are dark blackish brown. There is a sinuous dark yellowish medial band in the hindwings. Its larval food plants are from the genus Shorea.

Dorsally, L. intermedius is brown with darker and lighter variegations. There is a straight whitish streak across the nape of the neck. Ventrally it is pale brown, except for the throat which is whitish. It may attain a snout-to-vent length (SVL) of , and have a tail long.

The white discal spots in 1 to 4 along the inner edge of the forewing are in line. The wings are rounded with convex termens and have chequered fringes. A dark apical spot or ocellus is present on the forewing. The under hindwing is dark below, with beautiful white variegations not as prominent as the dark background.

This is the most restricted of the subspecies. It is only found in the Snowy Mountains area of south-eastern New South Wales. Males call from ponds or pools of streams in spring and summer. Due to its restricted range it is unlikely to be confused with other subspecies, however it is pale on the dorsal surface with fairly indistinct patches or variegations.

The orange leg patch of the dusky toadlet The dusky toadlet reaches 30mm in length. It can be dark brown or grey brown with lighter brown variegations or uniform dark brown on the dorsal surface, which is slightly rough and warty. There is normally a pale triangle shape on the head, starting from the eyes. There is a pale yellow patch in the armpit.

Litoria latopalmata spawn The broad-palmed frog is pale to dark brown on it dorsal surface; it can have darker blotches or variegations. Its skin is smooth, with the occasional wart on its back. A black band runs from the snout, through the eye and tympanum, and breaks into blotches down the side. A white line breaks the black band in front of the eye, and runs under the eye.

The under hindwing is dark below, with beautiful white variegations not as prominent as the dark background. The tegumen is gradually sloped to the tip. In A. brahminus, the under-forewing apical ocellus is well-defined and prominently pupilled while in A. brahminoides it is less well defined, much smaller and darker. The upper-hindwing discal band to dorsum, which is a characteristic feature in A. brahminus is much curved in the case of A. brahminoides.

Deer grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) and canyon prince wild blue rye (Leymus condensatus) are popular in larger settings, natural landscaping, and native plant gardens. There are Miscanthus grasses whose variegations are horizontal, and appear even on a cloudy day to be stippled with sunshine. Many Miscanthus and Pennisetum species flower in mid or late summer, and the seed heads are long lasting, often remaining well into the winter. Some Stipa species flower in the spring, the inflorescence standing almost two metres above the clumps of leaves, and again the seed heads last late into the winter.
