A number of patients in Illinois and Wisconsin who became sick after vaping reported using THC products sold under the brand name "Dank Vapes," according to a new report published by state health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Friday.
House leaders say they are likely to bring up the ban later this year as part of a push for further tobacco regulation after the president disappointed many Democrats and public health experts by rolling out a ban that was limited to certain flavored vapes.
Most said they were using e-cigarettes to quit or cut down on cigarettes because they thought of vapes as a "better alternative," said Niki Hoang, a San Diego-based counselor and former smoker who has been with the help line for seven years.
In the US, several states have announced bans on e-cigarette products, including Michigan, which announced a ban on flavored vapes and marketing restrictions for e-cigarette companies, and Massachusetts, which just announced that it was banning all e-cigarette products for four months.
In January, the agency held a public hearing to consider the role of drug therapies to get kids to quit vapes and other nicotine products, with medical organizations and vaping groups weighing in on how to address rising levels of e-cigarette use among youth.
"Dank Vapes appears to be the most prominent in a class of largely counterfeit brands, with common packaging that is easily available online and that is used by distributors to market THC-containing cartridges with no obvious centralized production or distribution," the report read.
As I previously reported for The Goods, many oppose a federal flavor ban since it might drive people away from vapes — what they see as a safer alternative to smoking — while flavored traditional tobacco products and cigarettes are not affected by the proposed ban.
While all cigarettes may as well have been in the same hot water in those years, former commissioner Gottlieb and other critics have argued that sleek, small, pod- and cartridge-based vapes made by Juul, blu and Vuse are central to the youth vaping problem.
It took some states longer than others (Montana's law banning the sale of e-cigarettes to minors only came into effect this year), but every state had already made it illegal to sell vapes to kids, with some states even banning the sale to anyone under 21.

A lack of regulation makes it difficult to pinpoint the cause of vaping-related illnesses, but researchers are hoping to find out According to Kalhan, the little research on and regulation of vapes makes it impossible to know which chemicals or substances are causing lung injuries.
As e-cigarettes have taken off, a burgeoning black market has formedThough vapes sold at smoke shops are legal for the time being, they aren't regulated by the FDA, so they have the potential to contain substances not on the label, similar to the unregulated supplement market.

Meanwhile, Juul is facing two additional lawsuits from smokers who claim its products are more addictive than regular cigarettes, reeling from a study that shows teens might not even know all Juuls contain nicotine, and dealing with an FDA probe into why minors are so obsessed with its vapes.

Among all tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco and hookah, e-cigarettes -- also known as vapes -- were the ones most commonly used by teens; 3.05 million or 20.8% of high school students and 570,000 or 4.9% of middle school students said they vaped at least once in the previous month.
Research from the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering also found that, although e-cigarette companies market their products as quitting aids for current smokers, vapes' popularity among teens can act as a gateway to conventional cigarette use (meaning, younger folks are starting off smoking e-cigs and moving onto conventional ones).

Many experts have considered vaping a much safer alternative to smoking, urging people—pregnant people included—to use e-cigarettes instead of real cigarettes; after 15 years on the market, millions of Americans are daily users of vapes or e-cigarettes, which have less toxins than cigarettes but other unstudied chemicals and heating elements.

Smokers can take a look at the FDA's updated tool to see if they can report a problem with their tobacco product of choice, from hand-rolled cigarettes to the most advanced diesel vapes, but with millions of young people trying e-cigs for the first time, it may not be immediately obvious that their device is defective.
New York's health department has also shared photos of a few of the vape products used by those who became sick; some cartridges were from Dank Vapes, a shadowy vaping package company — it's unclear who makes the cartridges or liquids that wind up in the branded packaging — while the other brand was candy-flavored Chronic Carts.
But to experts like Ilona Jaspers, deputy director of the Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma, and Lung Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, they signal the urgent need for regulations on the industry (the FDA has said that major new rules will be implemented by 2021) and caution from anyone who vapes.

The most striking thing about this study is that kids think vaping looks awesome, whereas we all know, vapes are just a lame stopgap to giving up smoking, or a hobby for men who stand outside their office buildings staring out into the distance, tasting the flavor of their vanilla and coffee concoctions, wondering when they'll need to replace the atomizer.
But as YouTube and streaming sites take the place of television in terms of reaching young people, it might be worth considering pushing for more clear definitions of what counts as native advertising on platforms like YouTube, as well as whether or not it's responsible for the site's stars to help promote products like vapes in videos aimed at kids.
Taken together, these actions could push people toward vapes, which often contain nicotine and will remain largely unregulated in the near future, if they take the FDA announcement as meaning that e-cigs are the safer option, or if the agency requires a new max level of nicotine in combustible cigarettes before the e-cig rules kick in in 2022.
