In geography, a vale is a wide river valley, usually with a particularly wide flood plain or flat valley bottom. In Southern England, vales commonly occur between the chalk formations, where the chalk dome has been eroded, exposing less resistant underlying rock, usually claystone. An example is the Vale of White Horse in Oxfordshire.

Born in Bilbao, Biscay, Vales appeared in one Segunda División B game for CD Basconia as the Basque club still not acted as Athletic Bilbao's farm team, which only took place in 1997. Aged 17, he was purchased by the latter and finished his football development there. Below it lie successively older strata of alternating clays and sandstones laid down in the Lower Cretaceous, namely Upper Greensand, Gault Clay, Lower Greensand, Weald Clay and the Hastings Beds. Differential fluvial erosion has virtually flattened the dome into a series of hills and vales. On the surface the strata of which the dome is composed crop out in a series of concentric circles, shaped like a horseshoe, with the more resistant chalk and sandstones forming hills and ridges (such as the North and South Downs, the Greensand Ridge, and the High Weald), and the weaker clays forming vales (such as the Low Weald) between them. Barrow is small fell in the English Lake District in the county of Cumbria which reaches a height of 455 metres (1,494 feet). It is situated in the Newlands Valley 2.5 miles (4 km) south-west of Keswick. Although comparatively small in height, Barrow commands an all-round view, with the vales of Keswick and Newlands being visible. The name of the fell originates from the Anglo Saxon language meaning a hill or long ridge.

View of the Hambleton Hills and Cowesby Hambleton covers an area of 1,311.17 km² most of which, 1,254.90 km², is green space. The district is named after the Hambleton Hills, part of the North York Moors National Park, on the eastern edge of the district. Having studied medicine in the University of Berlin, he spoke fluent German and during the 1920s, he served as a diplomat stationed in Berlin and Vienna. Having founded the Henequen Regulatory Commission, he later served as its Chairman.

A winterbourne is a stream or river that is dry through the summer months. A winterbourne is sometimes simply called a bourne, from the Anglo-Saxon word for a stream flowing from a spring, although this term can also be used for all-year water courses. Winterbournes generally form in areas where there is chalk (or other porous rock) downland bordering clay valleys or vales. Bunnerong Power Station is a demolished former coal-powered electric power station in the south-eastern Sydney suburb of Matraville, New South Wales, Australia. When the last generating units were commissioned, it was the largest power station in the southern hemisphere, with a capacity of 375 megawatts (MW) from eleven turbo-alternators. The Poole Logboat in Poole Museum is over 2,000 years old and made from a single oak tree. The Poole Harbour area has been inhabited for at least 2,500 years. During the Iron Age, Celtic people known as the Durotriges lived in Dorset, particularly around Wareham, five miles (8 km) to the west. In the 3rd century BC, these Celtic people moved from hilltop settlements, such as Maiden Castle and Badbury Rings on the chalk downs to the north, to the lower vales and heathland around the River Frome and Poole Harbour.

In September 2019, the Box Moor Trust reintroducted 177 Water Voles in to the River Bulbourne in Hemel Hempstead as part of a three year plan. There is an existing population in nearby Sarratt, and it is hoped that in time the two groups will breed. Wetlands West (formerly the Severn and Avon Vales Wetlands Partnership) reports on work done as part of the Water Vole Recovery Project in the Berkeley Vale. The hill is part of ridge of sandy limestone rock which is elevated above the lower lying clay vales and nearby Somerset Levels. The High Weald lies at the core of the distinctive Weald anticline. At its margins are the relatively flat clay vales of the Low Weald, the Greensand Ridge, the North Downs and South Downs. The Itanhém River is a river of Bahia state in eastern Brazil. The Itanhém River, also called the Alcobaça River, cuts through the Bahia municipalities of Alcobaça and Itanhém, and flows into Barra do Itanhém Beach in Alcobaça. It is born from the Machacalis in the municipality of Fronteira dos Vales, state of Minas Gerais, and runs from west to east to the mouth of Alcobaça in Bahia, where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. This river used to be the main access of the white colonizers originating from the Vila de Caravelas to the sertão baiano.

Teatro 8, which opened in 2000, was originally operated by the Hispanic Theater Guild, a Miami-based theater organization founded in 1989 with the involvement of Cuban American actor-director Marcos Casanova. Teatro 8 hosts frequent Spanish-language theater premiers, as well as productions of standards in the Hispanic theater repertoire. As of July 1, 2014, the venue will be managed by the Argentine group "Cirko Teatro," created by Jessica Alvarez Dieguez and Alejandro Vales. Teatro 8 lies in the center of the action on Miami's bustling Calle Ocho, a cultural hotspot for Cuban- American shops, restaurants, and museums.

Pan-toting originated in slavery in the United States, during the nineteenth century, among the African-American population. This practice evolved during the transition from slave to free labor, as an expression of a "moral economy". It is consistent with the "vales" and perquisites claimed by servants across cultures, dating back centuries. After the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, African-American domestic workers, as free laborers, continued this practice, to express their opposition to work conditions that deprived them of a decent standard of living, drawing on decades of experiences with creative resistance.

Here the Neretva river suddenly takes almost 180° degrees turn toward east-southeast and flows the short leg before it reach town of Jablanica. From this point it turns again toward south and enters third and the largest canyon on its course, running through the steep slopes of the mountains of Prenj, Čvrsnica and Čabulja, reaching between in depth. This section is characterized with steep and relatively narrow canyon, and rugged karstic geology and hydrology. Four enormous vales-size rifts appear in the mountainsides forming canyon walls, two from each sides of the river, intersecting with the main canyon almost perpendicularly.

This peat bog area is cut with ravines with steep slopes and huge amount of slope springs (there are nearly 100 between the villages Gryżyna and Grabin). In the south there are a few postglacial lakes and the biggest is the lake Jelito, which is 36.6 meters deep and covers the area of 49.9 hectares. To the east of the central and the western vales there are eskers, the kettle holes and kames with the dominant Border Mountain. In the beautiful landscape of the northern part of the park a 7,5- kilometre path of nature has been marked up with ten stands described by means of seventeen tables.

The village stretches around Ham Hill which is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Iron Age hill fort, Roman site, and country park. The hill has given its name to the distinctive quarried hamstone which is quarried from a ridge of sandy limestone rock that is elevated above the lower lying clay vales and nearby Somerset Levels. It is of particular importance to geologists because of the assemblages of fossils which it contains, the sedimentary features which it displays and the way it relates to other rocks of equivalent age in the close vicinity. The Bronze Age and Iron Age hill fort was occupied by the Durotriges tribe.

Many years before Tiriel begins, Har was overthrown by his children, Tiriel, Ijim and Zazel. As time went by, he and his wife, Heva, came to reside in the Vales of Har, where they gradually succumbed to dementia, regressing to a childlike state to such an extent that they came to think their guardian, Mnetha, is their mother, spending their days chasing birds and singing in a "great cage" (Tiriel; 3:21). Most of the national park consists of chalk downland, although a significant part includes the sandstones and clays of the western Weald, a strongly contrasting and distinctive landscape of densely wooded hills and vales. Karazgar's forces assault Erebor but are repelled and a company of dwarves departs to reclaim their ancient strongholds in Ered Mithrin, believing them to be safe after the defeat of Sauron. They battle against Karazgar until Gandalf's reveals his weakness and learns that Karazgar desires the very book that he carries. Gandalf departs to the lands of Beornings in the Vales of Andiuin, where he and the player meet with the entourage of Lord Elrond who accompany Lady Arwen to her wedding in Minas Tirith.

The Church of the Theotokos of Vale The Church of the Theotokos of Vale (, vales ghvtismshoblis eklesia) is a medieval Georgian Orthodox church at the town of Vale in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region in the south of Georgia, built in honor of the Theotokos (St. Mary). The extant edifice is a 16th-century monument, a three-nave basilica, a result of remodeling of an earlier, late-10th-century domed church, of which parts of lavish decor such as relief sculptures of laymen, clergy, and equestrian saints as well as cornices and window frames survive. The naves are separated by two pairs of arches. A bell- tower on the roof is an 18th or 19th-century addition.

The Ashdown Formation has been exposed by the erosion, over many millions of years, of a geological dome, the Weald-Artois Anticline, a process which has left the dome's oldest layers, the resistant sandstones that form its central east–west axis, as a high forest ridge that includes Ashdown, St. Leonard's, and Worth forests. This forest ridge, the most prominent part of the High Weald, is surrounded by successive concentric bands of younger sandstones and clays, and finally chalk. These form hills or vales depending on their relative resistance to erosion. Consequently, what the viewer sees when looking north or south across the Weald from the heights of Ashdown Forest is a series of successively younger geological formations.

Donhead Hollow from Win Green The Blackmoor Vale and Vale of Wardour area is a natural region in the counties of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire in southern England. The region is listed as National Character Area 133 by Natural England, the UK Government's advisor on the natural environment. Its irregularly shaped area covers and runs from Batcombe in the southwest to Frome and Warminster in the northeast, and from Wincanton in the west to Compton Chamberlayne in the east. To the west are the Yeovil Scarplands, to the north are the Mendip Hills and Avon Vales, to the south and east are the scarps of the Dorset Downs and the West Wiltshire Downs.

192 Although these forms are not well defined, they testament to the popularity of public interests at the time of its carving, providing an iconographic representation of the scene rather than a clearly literal interpretation. These sculptural themes are comparable to the churches of Sanfins de Friestas, Longos Vales and Bravães and suggest its completion in the middle of the 13th century. The lintel is inscribed with the presumed date of its construction, while in the tympanum is the figure of Christ surrounded by aureola. The representation of Christ is part of the first revivalist reproduction of the tympanum, while the serpentine lintel which is thin and less profound, is almost graffiti and less to do with the original form.

Upon his demise, Tiriel refused their offer of refuge in the palace, and instead went into exile in the mountains with his wife, Myratana. Five years later, the poem begins with the now blind Tiriel returning to the kingdom with his dying wife, as he wants his children to see her death, believing them to be responsible and cursing them for betraying him five years previously. Soon thereafter, Myratana dies, and Tiriel's children again ask him to remain with them but he refuses and wanders away, again cursing them and telling them he will have his revenge. After some time wandering, Tiriel eventually arrives at the "pleasant gardens" (2:10) of the Vales of Har, where he finds his parents, Har and Heva.

Excited by the visit, although unaware that Tiriel is their son, they ask him to stay with them, but he refuses and resumes his wanderings. Later, after Tiriel has had most of his own children killed, he returns to the Vales with the express purpose of condemning his parents, and the way they brought him up, declaring that Har's laws and his own wisdom now "end together in a curse" (8:8); Upon this declamation, Tiriel then dies at their feet. In the Africa section of the later poem The Song of Los (1795), which is set chronologically before Tiriel, Har and Heva are forced to flee into the wilderness, after their family rebel against them. In their exile in the desert, they then turn into reptiles.

The relatively resistant chalk rock has, through weathering, resulted in a classic cuesta landform, with a northward-facing chalk escarpment that rises dramatically above the low-lying vales of the Low Weald. The chalk escarpment reaches the English Channel west of Eastbourne, where it forms the dramatic white cliffs of Beachy Head, the Seven Sisters and Seaford Head. These cliffs were formed after the end of the last Ice Age, when sea levels rose and the English Channel was formed, resulting in under-cutting of the chalk by the sea. The South Downs run linearly west-north-westwards from the Eastbourne area through southern Sussex to the Hampshire downs, separating the south coastal plain from the clays and sandstones of the Weald.

Located between Montreal and Sherbrooke in proximity of Granby, the territory known as Bromont is characterized by a mountain with several summits, called Mont Brome (or Bromont), Mount Gale, and a smaller top, almost a hill, mount Soleil (literally mount Sun). By contrast, the terrain around this mountainous mass is flat and has hills and vales sparsely distributed. This is crossed by the Yamaska river, flowing in from Fulford from its source lake Brome, separated from Bromont by Iron Hill and Fulford (both parts of Lac-Brome), and definitely leaving into Saint-Alphonse-de-Granby. Two lakes: Bromont and Gale, are pooling between the mountaintops of Mont Brome; Gale Lake, on Mount Gale, is fed by waters of the mountain.

Another poet is Nicolas Fizes, of Frontignan, whose play, the Opéra de Frontignan (1670), dealing with a slight love intrigue, and an idyllic poem on the fountain of Frontignan, show a real poetic gift. A number of Toulouse poets, mostly laureats of the Academy, may be termed followers of Goudelin: of these François Boudet deserves mention, who composed an ode, Le Trinfe del Moundi (1678), in honor of his native dialect. The classical revival about this time is also generally ascribed to Goudelin's influence. Its best known representative was Jean de Vales, of Montech, who made excellent translations from Virgil and Persius, and wrote a brilliant burlesque of the former in the manner of Scarron (Virgile deguisat, 1648; only four books published).

The villa of Santa Cruz, home of the municipal seat, is an urbanized area that includes the historical center, Fazenda d'Alem, Monte, Vales and Ribeira dos Barqueiros. The core is the urbanized area extends from the eastern coast (to include the airport) and inland. Along the coast two small ports condition exports and traffic: the Porto das Poças (in the south), used by commercial fishermen and for traffic to Corvo, and the Porto do Boqueirão (in the north), an older whaling station whose ramp and factory (Fábrica da Baleia do Boqueirão) have become part of the Museum of Flores. In the extreme north of the parish is the small port of São Pedro, linked to the northern limit of the airport's runway.

Cafêzz was formed in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the summer of 2014 by pianist Carmen Noemí and bassist Edgardo "Egui" Sierra, after completion and release of their Music & Friends CD. Their first formal performance was on August 13, 2014, during the Music & Friends release party at Downtown Bar & Grill in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. The live concert featured 16 musicians who had participated in the recording process, plus several special guests. The lineup was as follows: Ricardo Pons, Pedro Rivera Toledo, Norberto "Tiko" Ortiz, José Roberto Jiménez, Roberto Bermúdez, Osvaldo López, Raúl Maldonado, Arnaldo Rivera, Danny Lloret, Christian Galíndez, Mónica Nieves, Ariana González, Marlene Grafals, Lianir Vales, Marielys Aldarondo and Angélica Kolsan. Special guests were Brenda Hopkins, Samuel Morales and Bernie Williams, plus bandladers Carmen Noemí and Edgardo Sierra.

In 1820, after the Constitution of 1812 was restored, the Trienio Liberal once again faced the problem of the national debt, which had not been resolved during six years of absolutist rule (1814–20). On 9 August 1820, the new courts revalidated the Cortes of Cádiz's decree of 13 September 1813, but added properties obtained in the Spanish Inquisition to the list of confiscation targets. The new decree differed from previous ones in that it measured vales reales by their nominal value, which was much higher than the market value. Because the market value of debt securities was so low compared with their nominal value, the cash paid by buyers was much lower than the appraised price—in some cases, less than 15 percent of the nominal value.

St Andrew and St Mary's Church is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church dedicated to Saint Andrew and Saint Mary, in the parish of Easton and the village of Stoke Rochford, Lincolnshire, England. The church is south from Grantham, and at the western side of the Lincolnshire Vales in South Kesteven. St Andrew and St Mary's is significant for its association with, and memorials to, the Easton Hall Cholmeley and the Stoke Rochford Hall Turnor families. The church is in the ecclesiastical parish of Stoke Rochford with Easton, and is part of the Colsterworth Group of Parishes in the Deanery of Loveden and the Diocese of Lincoln. Other churches in the same group are St John the Baptist's, Colsterworth; St James’, Skillington; Holy Cross, Great Ponton; and St Cuthlac's, Little Ponton.

St James the Great Church is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church dedicated to James, son of Zebedee in Aslackby, Lincolnshire, England. The church is north from Bourne, and in the Aslackby and Laughton parish on the eastern edge the South Kesteven Lincolnshire Vales. The church is significant for its historic association with the Aslackby Preceptory of the Knights Templar, and its unusual arch details in the tower. St James’ is in the ecclesiastical parish of Aslackby, and one of six churches in the Billingborough Group of Parishes, with their associated churches, in the Deanery of Lafford and the Diocese of Lincoln. Other churches in the group are: St Andrew’s Church, Horbling; St Andrew's Church, Billingborough; St Andrew's Church, Sempringham; St Andrew's Church, Dowsby; and Christchurch, Pointon.

The village is located amongst low-lying hills known as The Weald, which is situated between the North and South Downs and resting within the north eastern sector of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Iden Green is situated between four small towns; Staplehurst to the north, Tenterden to the east, Hawkhurst to the south and the nearest town of Cranbrook to the west. The geology of the High Weald consists largely of a series of hard standstone strata, underlain by heavy clays, giving rise to a combination which occurs across the Weald of sandstone ridges and clay vales. Combined with faulting and watercourses cutting into the rock sequences, this has led to the smooth rolling uplands, plateaus and ridgelines, strongly incised by deep stream valleys (ghylls).

On the Airbus A320 the Yellow system may power the Green system, but because it is also bi- directional, if the starboard engine fails, the Green system can help to power the yellow system by dumping excess power into it via the same mechanism. This is also known as a 'reversible' PTU. On some other aircraft the directional of rotation of the PTU, and thereby the fluid flow through it, may be designed to work in only one direction. The Citation X business jet is one such aircraft with a uni-directional PTU protected by check-vales and a back-pressure stall line, designed to allow the right hand hydraulic system to assist the left hand hydraulic system and left hand auxiliary motorpump to retract the landing gear during a Port engine failure only.

Alfredo sold it three years later to the Urcelay family, led by José Antonio Urcelay Peniche, a notable hacienda owner. In 1897 the estate had 90 people living on it, with "363 heads of cattle, 236 cows, 90 bulls, 37 calves, 29 horses (including mares) and 39 mules". Following the land reform of 1937, which involved the expropriation of land and machinery, and then the decline in demand for natural fibers on the international market, the estate entered a period of precipitous decline; in a few years Santa Rosa de Lima saw production plummet from 3465 to just 276 hectares. It was owned by engineer Enrique Vales Monforte at the time it was taken over by a private company in 1996, which fully restored it as an exclusive luxury hotel.

Originally the plant was fitted with the then-standard electrostatic precipitators for dust collection, and the more efficient fabric filters (as used at Eraring, Munmorah units 3 and 4, Vales Point 5+6, Bayswater and Mount Piper) were retrofitted in the early 1990s, reducing particulate emissions to a barely visible level. Much of the coal is supplied by overland conveyors from mines it shares with the nearby Bayswater Power Station.

He was the grandson of José María Pino Suárez, Vice President of Mexico (1911-13) He is also the great-great-great grandson of Pedro Sáinz de Baranda y Borreiro (1787-1845), a former Governor of Yucatán, industrialist and naval officer who served in the Battle of Trafalgar and was a hero of the Mexican War of Independence, now known as the "Father of the Mexican Navy". He was born in a house in the Paseo de Montejo in Merida, Yucatan, on 15 February 1927. His father was Ramón Moreno Sánchez, a wealthy financier and landowner, and his mother was Aida Pino Cámara. His maternal grandparents were María Cámara Vales, recipient of the Belisario Domínguez Medal, while his paternal grandfather was José María Pino Suárez a lawyer and statesman who served as governor, minister and vice-president of the Republic.

In Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, published in 1837, Ovens is described under the Anglican parish name of Athnowen: :ATHNOWEN (ST. MARY), or OVENS, a parish partly in the barony of BARRETTS, but chiefly in that of EAST MUSKERRY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 1½ mile (W.) from Ballincollig; containing 1953 inhabitants. This parish, which is generally called Ovens, is situated on the south line of road from Cork to Macroom, and is bounded on the north by the river Lee, and intersected by the Bride. :It comprises 4660 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £7594 per annum: the soil in the northern or hilly part is rather poor and stony, but in the vales extremely rich, lying on a sub-stratum of limestone forming part of the great limestone district extending to Castlemore on the west, and to Blackrock on the east.

The Yorkshire Dales are surrounded by the North Pennines and Orton Fells in the north, the Vales of York and Mowbray in the east, the South Pennines in the south, and the Lake District and Howgill Fells to the west. They spread to the north from the market and spa towns of Settle, Skipton, and Harrogate in North Yorkshire, to the southern boundary in Wharfedale and Airedale. Natural England define the area as most of the Yorkshire Dales National Park with fringes of the Nidderdale AONB, but without the towns listed above apart from Settle. The lower reaches of Airedale and Wharfedale are not usually included in the area, and Calderdale, south of Airedale and in the South Pennines, is not often considered part of the Dales even though it is a dale, is in Yorkshire, and its upper reaches are as scenic and rural as many further north.

Chenkú is first described in 1710 when it is described as a place near an Indian village in the parish of Chuburna where cattle and beehives were kept. In 1788 it became property of Captain José Ignacio Rivas Chacón. In April, 1903 a fifth of the original property was sold by Idelfonso Gutierrez to Alberto Ancona Cámara. Candelaria Escalante de Duarte and her son Ignacio Duarte Escalante bought the remainder of the hacienda from Fernando García Fajardo, Agustín Vales Castillo, Alberto Ancona Cámara, Idelfonso Gutiérrez and Nicanor Ancona Cámara. In 1908, the Peninsular Banco Mexicano SA bought Chenkú and Santa Rosa Buenavista at public auction to settle a mortgage judgment against Ignacio Duarte Escalante. In 1913 the property was acquired from the bank by Vicenta Castilla Molina, who transferred it to her children in 1923 along with 14 other rural properties and 4 properties within the city.

There are centres of settlement, the largest of which are Horsham, Burgess Hill, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Crowborough; and the area along the coast from Hastings and Bexhill-on-Sea to Rye and Hythe. The geological map shows the High Weald in lime green (9a). The Low Weald,Natural England: Notes on the Low Weald the periphery of the Weald, is shown as darker green on the map (9),The additional green section on the map, outside the other two, is not part of The Weald: to the north it is the Vale of Holmesdale; to the south the Vale of Sussex and has an entirely different character. It is in effect the eroded outer edges of the High Weald, revealing a mixture of sandstone outcrops within the underlying clay. As a result, the landscape is of wide and low- lying clay vales with small woodlands (“shaws”) and fields.

This parish, which comprises, according to the Ordnance survey, 27,367¼: statute acres, of which 627¾ are water, is situated on the north-western coast; it comprehends the greater part of the peninsular district of Fannet, or Fanad, extending northward into the ocean, and terminating in the points called Maheranguna and Pollacheeny. The surface is for the most part occupied by mountains of considerable altitude, among which Knockalla is 1196 feet above the level of the sea: these are separated by deep and narrow vales, of which the soil is tolerably good, consisting of a brown gravelly mould, sometimes inclining to clay, on a basis of white gravel, brownish or reddish clay, slate of various colours, and sometimes soft freestone rock. The parish contains about 60 quarter lands of good arable and bad pasture, with much waste and barren land: many acres have been covered and destroyed by the shifting sands. The point of Fannet is in lat.

Edwin Waugh, in his 'Home-Life of the Lancashire Factory Folk during the Cotton Famine' gives a vivid but historically interesting insight into the lives of the Larks of Dean in the following passage: "Up in the forest of Rosendale, between Deerply Moor and the wild hill called Swinshaw, there is a little lone valley, a green cup in the mountains, called "Dean." The inhabitants of this valley are so notable for their love of music, that they are known all through the vales of Rosendale as "Th' Deighn Layrocks," or "The Larks of Dean." "In the twilight of a glorious Sunday evening, in the height of summer, I was roaming over the heathery waste of Swinshaw, towards Dean, in company with a musical friend of mine, who lived in the neighbouring clough, when we saw a little crowd of people coming down a moorland slope, far away in front of us. As they drew nearer, we found that many of them had musical instruments, and when we met, my friend recognised them as working people living in the district, and mostly well known to him.

Dorset has many notable Roman artefacts,Archaeological finds are conserved in the Dorset County Museum, Dorchester particularly around the Roman town Dorchester, where Maiden Castle was taken early in the Roman occupation. In the grounds of the County Council offices is a Roman house with well preserved mosaic floors and an aqueduct fed by waters of a tributary of the Frome impounded behind an earthen dam, with a covered timber-lined channel of some nine km; the dam gave way and the aqueduct was abandoned unexpectedly early, in the mid-2nd century.Bill Putnam, "The Roman Aqueduct at Dorchester, Dorset" Roman roads radiated from Dorchester, following the tops of the chalk ridges north west to Ilchester near Yeovil, and east to Badbury Rings where it forked to Winchester, Bath and a particularly well-preserved route running north east to Old Sarum near Salisbury, as well as tracks to the many small Roman villages around the county. In the Roman era settlements moved from the hill tops to the valleys, with Roman finds, such as the famous Hinton St Mary mosaic, being found in the vales.

Totmonslow, or Totmanslow, is the north-eastern Hundred of Staffordshire, and contains that mountainous region called the Moorlands, which adjoins and partakes of the general character of the Derbyshire Peak, abounding in lime and formerly coal. This bleak and alpine district exhibits many of the wildest and most stupendous features of nature, as well as some of her more chaste and fertile beauties, the latter of which are confined chiefly to the narrow and picturesque vales of the rivers Dove, Manyfold, Hamps, Tean, Blythe, Dane, and Churnet, which have their principal sources in this Hundred, and here receive many small but rapid streams from the high, peaty moorlands and rocky mountains which rise in picturesque disorder, and shut in the fertile pastures of the glens and valleys. Totmonslow Hundred The Hundred has an irregular, oval figure, stretching from the three shire stone, above Flash, southward to Uttoxeter, a distance of 25 miles, and averaging from 10 to 15 miles in breadth. The River Dove forms its eastern boundary for nearly 30 miles, and separates it from Derbyshire; and for about 10 miles at its northern extremity, it is divided from Cheshire by the River Dane.

It is not known exactly when there was first a settlement at Pocklington – archaeologists have found Iron Age remains in and around the town and many Bronze Age burials and other finds have been discovered in the neighbourhood. More recently in 2016 builders uncovered an earlier, Bronze Age, settlement, dating to around 800 BC. In 1937, wooden planks belonging to an ancient boat were discovered by a local man in nearby Ferriby. Originally estimated to date from 1300 BC, newer estimates using radiocarbon dating have placed the boats between the years 1890 BC to 1700 BC. Certainly the Wolds area as a whole was a very attractive location for settlements to ancient man, who preferred to stay clear of the poorly drained and often flooded neighbouring vales – before the draining of a lot of land in the medieval era the flat land to the west and south of Pocklington was very marshy. Archaeologists have experienced problems in recovering early remains and artefacts from the area intact because of the damage and disruption caused by centuries of arable land use – one skeleton discovered in 2005 was intact apart from its skull, which had been sheared off and crushed by a plough.
