WFTW was first licensed on January 6, 1954 to the Vacationland Broadcasting Company of Fort Walton Beach."AM Query: First License Date" (FCC.gov) On February 28, 1979 the call letters were changed to WDIS, but they were changed back to WFTW on the first day of 1981. The call letters WFTW earlier were assigned to a station in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that began broadcasting August 10, 1947. In the 1960s and 1970s, WFTW was an FM station in Fort Walton Beach with a “beautiful music” format.

The Long Barn Lodge was built in the 1920s, which included a restaurant, rooms, bar and entertainment for vacationers in the mountains. Heralded as the Four Seasons Resort along the area called Sonora Pass Vacationland, the lodge grew to include a pool, horseback riding, ice skating, hiking and more. The historic Long Barn Lodge, the old lodge, restaurant, game room and bar burned down in 2002, and due to lack of insurance was not rebuilt. The Long Barn Lodge is still open today, with motel rooms, cabins, ice skating, swimming pool and events.

The Firelands region of northern Ohio circa 1826. Many cities in the westernmost part of the area consider themselves to be in what is known in modern times as the "Vacationland" region of Ohio. In the early part of the 20th century, cities along the Lake Erie shoreline, such as Sandusky, Ohio, began to become popular vacation destinations for more affluent Ohioans. Families bought either summer cottages or vacation homes in the area, and people with access to boats sailed or fished in Lake Erie from this area.

In 2009, during graduate school, Scheinfeld began to document the remains of her hometown region – searching for any relics of the Borscht Belt she could find. She worked from 2009 to 2015 to document the degradation of some of the area's most famous hotels and bungalow colonies. On October 4, 2016, Cornell University Press published a monograph of this photographic series. The book, entitled The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America's Jewish Vacationland includes 129 photographs, original ephemera, and writings from a Jewish American Historian and Sociologist.

In 1961, the Missouri State Highway Commission published its annual Family Vacationland map and distributed it around the state. Officials in McDonald County, upon reviewing the map discovered that Noel, a small but economically vital Ozarks resort town, was inadvertently omitted from the publication. Noel, located in the extreme southwest corner of the state, was one of the most popular tourist destinations in that part of the state, due to its resorts, bluffs, caves, and rivers. Its absence on one of the most-read pieces of tourist literature in the state was sure to affect the county's livelihood negatively.

Vacationland, the largest and last Michigan State Highway Department automobile ferry put in service prior to the completion of the Mackinac Bridge The Algonquian peoples who lived in the straits area prior to the arrival of Europeans in the 17th century called this region Michilimackinac, which is widely understood to mean the Great Turtle. This is thought to refer to the shape of what is now called Mackinac Island. This interpretation of the word is debated by scholars. Trading posts at the Straits of Mackinac attracted peak populations during the summer trading season; they also developed as intertribal meeting places.

After graduating from Yonkers High School in 1939, Caesar left home, intent on a musical career. He arrived in Manhattan and worked as an usher and then a doorman at the Capitol Theater there. He was ineligible to join the musicians' union in New York City until he established residency, but he found work as a saxophonist at the Vacationland Hotel, a resort located in the Catskill Mountains of Sullivan County, New York. Mentored by Don Appel, the resort's social director, Caesar played in the dance band and learned to perform comedy, doing three shows a week.

WLKR (1510 AM) - branded 92.9 WLKR Classic - is a commercial daytime-only classic hits radio station licensed to serve Norwalk, Ohio, covering the Norwalk/Sandusky/Port Clinton market (collectively referred to as Vacationland and/or the Firelands), including Erie and Huron counties. Owned by Elyria- Lorain Broadcasting Co., the WLKR studios are located in Milan, while the station transmitter resides near the intersection of Huber Road and Lamereaux Road just outside of Norwalk. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WLKR simulcasts over low-power analog Norwalk translator W225DG (92.9 FM), and is also available online.

New docks were constructed and more permanent vessels for the ferry service were ordered. In 1971 the sister ships MV Holiday Island and MV Vacationland entered service, and Borden processed record traffic on its ferry system in the lead-up to PEI's centennial year in 1973, after which the MV Confederation and MV Lucy Maude Montgomery were reassigned to other services and left Borden permanently. In 1977, CN reorganized its ferry services in eastern Canada under a separate operating company named CN Marine; the new company immediately ordered a newly designed ferry to replace the MV Abegweit, which reached 30 years service that year.

Rick Ford played with Hazel O'Connor and Joe Jackson and now composes soundtrack music for the entertainment industry in California, while Steve Peer returned to work with TV Toy. In the early '80's he formed Custom Made Country, a cow-punk band that hailed from the easternmost town in the USA, Lubec, Maine. While in Maine he started Reversing Recordings, a label that features Down East musicians and most anyone else who wants to align with the Vacationland movement. He co-wrote and played drums on two Puzzle Monkey albums, and continues to tour and record with Trisha Mason, The Larks and Doug Hoyt and The Crown Vics.

In historical times, the bay was used as a harbor by the Mackinac Transportation Company, operator of train ferries; the Vacationland and her sister vessels, which crossed the Straits carrying motor vehicles; and the Arnold Transit Company ferry boat line to Mackinac Island. State historical markers describe the history of the harbor. A bottomland survey of East Moran Bay was performed by the Michigan Underwater Preserve Council and its volunteer sport divers in the early 1900s and published by the United States Government Printing Office in 1992. The city of St. Ignace has built and maintains an East Moran Bay waterfront path, the Huron Boardwalk, marked with signs and artifacts, to interpret and celebrate the bay and its heritage.

Marblehead is part of the area that is referred to regionally as Vacationland (which includes nearby Sandusky and the Lake Erie Islands), due to the large number of tourists who flock to the area in the summer months. It remains a popular vacation destination due to its lake frontage, ferry service to the Lake Erie Islands, quality sport fishery, the nearby Lakeside Chautauqua, and the Cedar Point amusement park. Marblehead is also home to the Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve, home to the only natural U.S. population of the Lakeside Daisy, an endangered species. Marblehead is home to the Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continuously- operating lighthouse on the American side of the Great Lakes.

Idylease ( "idle-ease"), a former resort hotel located in Newfoundland, New Jersey, was erected in 1902 and is an architecturally and historically significant example of early 20th century resort architecture in Northwest, New Jersey. The only surviving example of resort facilities in the region, it recalls the popularity of the region as the vacationland for the middle class in the late nineteenth century. The Inn was built for a group of 11 investors calling themselves The Newfoundland Health Association headed by Dr Edgar DayDr Edgar Day -- Listed Physician, Brooklyn Medical Journal Vol XVI No. 5 May 1902 from Brooklyn, NY. Idylease is situated on the summit of an -hill in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains and is located 30 miles northwest from New York City.
