The history of deaf education in the United States began in the early 1800s when the Cobbs School of Virginia, an oral school, was established by William Bolling and John Braidwood, and the Connecticut Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, a manual school, was established by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. When the Cobbs School closed in 1816, the manual method, which used American Sign Language, became commonplace in deaf schools for most of the remainder of the century. In the late 1800s, schools began to use the oral method, which only allowed the use of speech, as opposed to the manual method previously in place. There is much debate regarding the linguistic conditions under which deaf children acquire spoken language via cochlear implantation. The communication limitations between people who are deaf and their hearing family members can often cause difficulties in family relationships, and affect the strength of relationships among individual family members. It was found that most people who are deaf have hearing parents, which means that the channel that the child and parents communicate through can be very different, often affecting their relationship in a negative way. If a parent communicates best verbally, and their child communicates best using sign language, this could result in ineffective communication between parents and children. Terry Ruane (born 21 November 1946 in Croydon, Surrey) is an English actor and director who became profoundly deaf as a result of meningitis at the age of five. Although educated in an oral school, he is also a sign language user, and from 1974 he was the General Manager of the British Theatre of the Deaf under Pat Keysell which was the first-ever professional company of deaf actors to tour Great Britain presenting plays in sign language. When Keysell resigned in 1976, Ruane went on to develop and tour his own company, Interim Theatre Company, which continued for some years and he is believed to be the first deaf person in the UK to co-direct a play, Hearing at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1979. In the early 1980s he had various projects occupying him in the United States, and was involved in setting up the London production of Children of a Lesser God and later ran a Theatre in Education project using sign language for children in special schools.

She has sold an estimated 200 million records, making her one of the best-selling Mainland Chinese artist during the 1990s, and leading her to be referred to as "China's Whitney Houston", and "China's Madonna". Her breakthrough came in 1986 when she won the National Young Singers contest on Chinese television and The 24th Sopot International Song Festival in Poland, when she also won the "Miss Photo Category", and four years later, she was chosen to perform at the 11th Asian Games in Beijing, singing a duet with Spanish singer Julio Iglesias at the 1993 East Asian Games in Shanghai. Largely associated with sports and the Olympics, Wei has been an Olympic Ambassador for China since 1993 when the Chinese Olympic Committee applied for the games for the first time.
