ScicomP was formed in October 1999 when 285 researchers and engineers met at IBM's Advanced Computing Technology Center (ACTC) at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights, NY. The meeting was a user-oriented and planned 3-day workshop to share information on scientific computing techniques for the users of IBM SP supercomputers. The meeting was created on the recommendations of the attendees of the IBM SP Scientific Applications Development and Optimization Workshop held in March 1999 at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The objective of that meeting was to help computational scientists and engineers develop applications that achieve maximum performance and scalability on the IBM SP systems. Eventually the runtime libraries became an amalgamated program that was started before the first customer job and could read in the customer job, control its execution, record its usage, reassign hardware resources after the job ended, and immediately go on to process the next job. These resident background programs, capable of managing multi step processes, were often called monitors or monitor-programs before the term "operating system" established itself. An underlying program offering basic hardware-management, software-scheduling and resource-monitoring may seem a remote ancestor to the user-oriented OSes of the personal computing era. But there has been a shift in the meaning of OS. SBGrid was first created by Piotr Sliz as an in-house effort to support and maintain a few dozen X-ray crystallography in the laboratory of Stephen C. Harrison and the late Don Craig Wiley, then at Harvard University and Boston Children’s Hospital. After adding support for additional labs, SBGrid began charging user fees to recover operational costs in 2002. It also expanded software support to include electron microscopy (EM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and other structural biology techniques. In response to requests from users for support for Macintosh computers, SBGrid recompiled most of its applications to run on the OSX platform in 2004. By 2006, the SBGrid consortium included 37 laboratories at 14 different institutions. SBGrid’s user-oriented community began to solidify in 2008 with its first user meeting: Quo Vadis Structural Biology (“Where is structural biology heading?”). The meeting attracted approximately 300 participants and incorporated a structural biology symposium and three workshops: scientific programming with Python; molecular visualization with Maya; and OSX programming.
