On January 2, 2006, Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff, veteran ABC News journalists, were chosen to be Jennings's permanent replacements. They had both been interim anchors. Vargas had been designated by Peter Jennings as only favored choice as back up anchor on September 11, 2001. Following Woodruff's severe injury on January 29, 2006, while on assignment in Iraq, and Vargas's announcement that she was pregnant, some critics questioned whether Vargas could sustain the program on her own, pointing to falling ratings. Lawe returned to Newport, Rhode Island, on 25 August 1956 and conducted East Coast operations until mid- December when she berthed at New London, Connecticut, for the holidays, In January 1957, the destroyer returned to Newport for a tender availability; and, on the 28th of that month, William C. Lawe pulled up anchor and proceeded to the Mediterranean for a five-month tour of duty. She visited ports in Greece, Sicily, Italy, and France. The ship returned to her home port for May and June, then spent eight weeks on a midshipmen cruise. Lawe spent the remainder of 1957 at the Boston Naval Shipyard undergoing overhaul.

Yu's began her career in broadcasting in 1970 where she became a writer and producer for KTLA-TV in Los Angeles and then as a writer for ABC O&O; KABC-TV also in Los Angeles. In early–1975, Yu moved to Portland, Oregon where she had a brief stint as a reporter for KATU-TV. After a few months in Oregon, Yu moved back to California where she landed a job as general assignment reporter and back–up anchor for ABC O&O; KGO-TV, in San Francisco; where she worked until 1979. She later moved to NBC, where she anchored the weekend edition of the Today Show and filled in for Brian Williams on the weekend edition of NBC Nightly News, and undertook various special reporting assignments in the U.S. and elsewhere.
