The D-236, an engine with unshrouded contra-rotating propellers, was first investigated in 1979 as the powerplant for the first version of the Ukrainian Antonov An-70. The front propeller was tested on the Antonov An-32 military transport aircraft in 1980, as the An-32's normal Ivchenko AI-20DM engines had about half the rated power of the D-236. However, the anticipated improvements in takeoff performance and noise reduction did not materialize. The Yak-46 and the Yak-42M, a of the Yak-42 that would enter service in , would have fly-by-wire (FBW) controls, an electronic flight instrument system (EFIS), a supercritical airfoil wing of added aspect ratio, span, and sweep, seating capacity of 150 passengers or more, and new engines with thrust reversal capability. However, the Yak-46 would have two unshrouded propfan engines mounted on the aft fuselage, instead of the Yak-42 and Yak-42M's three aft-mounted turbofan engines (that includes one attached to the vertical stabilizer). Yakovlev also proposed an unnamed interim derivative situated between the Yak-42M and the Yak-46, which would be powered by two underwing engines based on the contra-rotating, integrated, shrouded propfan (CRISP) engine concept.

In the gas generator, the intermediate pressure compressor (IPC) is designed by MTU Aero Engines and has five stages. To reduce the complexity of the component, the IPC does not have variable inlet or stator vanes. The high-pressure compressor (HPC) is designed by Rolls-Royce. The HPC has six total stages, with four of them as fixed stages (blisks), and the other two as variable stages. Snecma supplied the combustor, which was based on the combustor of its M88 turbofan fighter engine. To drive the HPC, Snecma also supplied the high pressure turbine (HPT), which also based on the HPT of the M88. The intermediate pressure turbine (IPT) driving the IPC is also a derived component, this time from MTU and based on the IPT of the Turbo-Union RB199 and Eurojet EJ200 turbofan fighter engines. Both the Snecma HPT and the MTU IPT have one stage, but the HPT is unshrouded, while the IPT has a shroud.

By the 2000s, open rotor (OR) became a preferred term for propfan technology in research and news reports, with contra-rotating open rotor (CROR) also occasionally being used to distinguish between single-rotation propfans. El-Sayed differentiates between turboprops and propfans according to 11 different criteria, including number of blades, blade shape, tip speed, bypass ratio, Mach number, and cruise altitude.
