Sea Pigeon won once as a two-year-old in October 1972, when he was ridden to victory by Lester Piggott in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Ascot. In early 1973, he was considered a serious contender for the Classics. He ran in the 1973 Epsom Derby and finished seventh behind Morston. By the end of 1973, Sea Pigeon's indifferent form led to him being thought "ungenuine, highly-strung and difficult to handle." He was subsequently gelded and was sold for £8,000 to Pat Muldoon, who sent the horse to National Hunt trainer Gordon W. Richards.

Critical reception for The Novelist has been mixed and the game holds a rating of 66 on Metacritic, based upon 18 reviews. In their review IGN expressed disappointment over the game only having limited endings, as they felt that this "oversimplifies what is otherwise a nuanced portrayal of the balancing act that goes on within families". Wired criticized what they saw as an overuse of personal notes, diaries, and pictures to show what the characters are thinking or feeling, as they found that this felt "ungenuine". Wired also panned The Novelist's stealth mode, and commented that it was "a mostly meaningless obstacle to the story".

In the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh in May he started second favourite, but after moving forward in the straight he failed to persevere with his effort and finished fifth behind Sadler's Wells. As in some of his previous races, Rousillon raced with his head at a high, crooked angle, giving the impression that he was ungenuine and temperamental. In July, Rousillon met Chief Singer again in the Sussex Stakes over one mile at Goodwood Racecourse. In a rough and controversial race, Rousillon finished second by half a length to Chief Singer but was disqualified and placed last for causing interference to the winner in the closing stages.

He made his debut in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains over 1600 metres at Longchamp on 25 April when he started favourite against eight opponents and finished fourth behind Melyno, Tampero, and Day Is Done. In the Prix Jean Prat over 1800 metres at Longchamp in June, he finished last of the five runners behind Melyno, Zino (who had won the 2000 Guineas), Be My Native, and Tampero. His performances led to speculation that he had either failed to "train on" (make the normal progress from two to three) or that he was "ungenuine".
