In mid-December 1972, Jerry Brandt, Carly Simon's former manager, overheard a demo tape being played by Clive Davis at Columbia Records. Cited to be the best known Malay restaurant in Singapore, Aziza's was originally an unfurnished shophouse at 36 Emerald Hill Road before Aziza purchased it in 1978 for S$150,000. Aziza's opened in 1979, becoming Singapore's first Malay restaurant. From 1923 to 1937, the Royal Hotel buildings were leased by the Presbyterian Australian Inland Mission (AIM) as their first bush nursing home, or hostel. It was staffed by two nursing sisters, the first two arriving in September 1923. At that time the main building consisted of 6 rooms and was unfurnished. A 1926 photograph shows that parts of two walls of a stone shed at the rear of the hostel had collapsed by this date, and was nicknamed the "Hole in the Wall Hospital Store".

Sir Nathaniel Staples, 10th Baronet (1817-1899) by his son Robert Ponsonby Staples The couple's godchild Mary Banks, (daughter of Sir John Banks), inherited the Staples' Dublin property including the fine portrait of Catherine, Lady Staples by Martin Cregan now restored to Lissan. Harriet Gage (nee Lenox-Conyngham, a relative from Springhill House ) inherited the entire contents of Lissan House. The Maplewood Hotel is located on Maple Street in downtown Holyoke, at the corner of Essex Street and overlooking Library Park. This latter requirement led to Rent Officers being deluged with requests from local authorities for informal advice on what a fair rent was likely to be. The Act of 1972 required local authorities to set up rent allowance schemes in respect of unfurnished houses in the private sector (including housing associations) but by the Furnished Lettings (Rent Allowances) Act 1973 certain furnished tenants in both the public and private sectors were made eligible for rent allowances.

For all new tenancies created on or after 14 August 1974, whether furnished or unfurnished, the factor to decide their protection was to be the residency or non-residency of the landlord.
