Ordóñez also accused Peralta of underfeeding the natives who were working on the construction of Santa Fe. In 1613, Ordonez began construction of a church at Nambé Pueblo, about north of Santa Fe. When Peralta sent soldiers to Nambe to collect the pueblo's quota of workers to help build the governor's palace, Ordonez refused to release any workers. Another dispute arose in May 1613 when some soldiers who were going north to collect tribute from the Indians at Taos Pueblo met Ordóñez, who sent them back to Santa Fe to observe the Feast of Pentecost. The soldiers obeyed. On their return, the governor immediately dispatched them to Taos again, saying they could observe the feast at any of the missions on the route.

The struggle for power intensified, and in May 1613 Ordonez excommunicated Peralta, posting a notice announcing this on the doors of the Santa Fe church. On 12 August 1613 Ordóñez and his followers arrested Peralta and had him chained and imprisoned in the mission of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) at Sandia.

In humans, when calories are restricted because of war, famine, or diet, lost weight is typically regained quickly, including for obese patients. In the Minnesota Starvation Experiment, after human subjects were fed a near-starvation diet for a period, losing 66% of their initial fat mass, and later allowed to eat freely, they reattained and even surpassed their original fat levels, reaching 145% of the pre-starvation fat levels. Evidence for an organism-level set point has been found experimentally in "normal" rats and in rats with dorsomedial hypothalamic lesions. In addition, in a study with obese and non- obese subjects who lost 10%-20% of their body mass from underfeeding, the energy expenditure of the subjects was found to decrease, while after gaining 10% of their body mass from overfeeding their energy expenditure was found to increase.
