Ascospores are simple, hyaline, and often small. Conidia generally arise laterally from the joints of conidiogenous hyphae (Parmelia- type), but arise terminally from these joints in a small number of species (Psora-type). The conidia can have a broad range of shapes: cylindrical to bacilliform, bifusiform, fusiform, sublageniform, unciform, filiform, or curved. Pycnidia are immersed or rarely emergent from the upper cortex, are produced along the lamina or margins, pyriform in shape, and dark-brown to black in colour.

Punctelia was circumscribed by lichenologist Hildur Krog in 1982. The genus originally contained 22 species segregated from Parmelia based on differences in the ontogeny of the pseudocyphellae, secondary chemistry, and phytogeography. Krog divided Punctelia into two subgenera: Punctelia subgenus Punctelia, characterized by hook-shaped (unciform) spermatia and atranorin as a major cortical substance, and Punctelia subgenus Flavopunctelia characterized by bifusiform spermatia and usnic acid as a major cortical substance. Based on differences in spermatia shape as well as additional chemical characters, Flavopunctelia was recognized by Mason Hale as a separate genus consisting of four species.

A fragment of the shoulder blade indicates that it was short and strong; the glenoid cavity was twice its length and the acromion was very high. The humerus is relatively short, 497 to 500 millimeters in length, but extremely wide, with great insertions for the muscles; the ulna and radius are also known, both even shorter, about 225 millimeters, and the ulna also had a large olecranon. The postacetabular blade of the ilium (bone) is stouter and more squared than in Anchiornis but less robust and quadrangular than in Aurornis. The ischium does not show the particular dorsocaudally straight morphology that is proper of Aurornis, and has a narrow and unciform process. Serikornis is further distinguished by having very large anterior most maxillary teeth, about twice as long as the others. Since the skeleton compressed on a plane, Lefèvre and colleagues have used a new microscan technique called luminography to identify the pneumatic cavity in the vertebrae: the cervical vertebrae have a small pneumatic cavity, which is a derived condition shared by many other coelurosaurian theropods.

This contains on the cell a blackish dot. The suffused patch which succeeds it is connected to the costa by a rather paler chestnut-brown shade, through which runs a steely grey streak, starting from a white costal speck and meeting at its outer end a narrow whitish streak, also from the costa—these both merge in a pale yellowish ochreous patch beyond the end of the cell. Other steely grey scales and pale streaks pass through an elongate suffused patch lying on the dorsum below the pale ochreous patch, while above it, but separated by a line of blackish scales, the subcostal area is suffused with dark chestnut brown nearly to the apex, the costal edge alone being pale ochreous, continued as a median streak at the base of the brownish cilia in the unciform apex. Below the subapical incision is a pale ochreous, or almost whitish, patch on the termen, margined on its inner side by steely grey scales, and on its outer edge on the base of the cilia by parallel brown lines.
