The thought nagged at me throughout the first two days of shows here, when designers like Neil Barrett again offered a display of why he remains a durable presence in a fickle business with a typically disciplined collection of bomber jackets with diagonal inserts reminiscent of marquetry; mock turtlenecks; safari, field and bomber jackets in a palette inspired by American television shows popular throughout Britain in the '70s (YouTube almost any old Soul Train episode for a glimpse of those cognac, butterscotch, chocolate and gold hues), and slim, high-waist denim trousers.

She melded deep jewel toned velvets and crystalline sequined capes that glimmered like the walls of an emerald mine; spliced a short black cape jacket to a white shirt; trapped flyaway nude silk chiffons with hammered silver breastplates; sent necklines soaring like satin stalagmites Men's narrow overcoats were pavéd in the same silver sequins and beaded peacock feathers as the gowns (though the men still seem like accessories to the women, rather than equals); trench coats lined in starlight; thin black turtlenecks and cigarette pants layered under glimmering bustier dresses with petal skirts.

We've got our crew necks and turtlenecks (for those whose blush comes with the bonus neck flush); we've got our green concealer, which is a cosmetics strategy that hides facial redness; we've got our long hair, which can be draped over reddened cheeks; we've got our blue, green, black, brown and gray clothing, which downplays redness; we've got small, low noise fans on our desk; and we've got our trusty water bottle from which we can sip cool water and hold up against our cheeks when no one is looking.
