Turn Loose the Swans is the second album by the British doom metal band My Dying Bride, released in 1993 and remastered in 2013. It marked a radical departure from the band's first full-length, As the Flower Withers. Martin Powell's violin playing had become fully integrated into the band's sound, whilst vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe mixed death metal growls and grunts with the spoken word and an often plaintive singing voice. The first ("Sear Me MCMXCIII") and final ("Black God") tracks dispensed with guitars, bass and drums altogether, while the album was also far slower and longer than its predecessor.

After the First Battle of Shanghai ended with the de facto control of Hongkou, Ward Road Gaol found itself located in the middle of the Japanese-controlled sector of the International Settlement. Again, during the hostilities of 1937, the prison was trapped between the Chinese and Japanese armies. It was accidentally shelled a number of times, with prisoners killed and guards injured. "Turn Loose the Mermaids" is a "celtic ballad, sad, melancholic" song, and one of only two "real ballads" on Imaginaerum, and with a spaghetti western inspired C-part. "Rest Calm" is one of the heavier songs on the album, inspired by doom metal bands such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, and is a mid-tempo and heavy but still melodic song that "gets totally out of hand in the end".

Dave Pybus (born 4 June 1970) is an extreme metal musician, best known as the former bass player of Cradle of Filth. Pybus's first band was called Anul Death (1988–1991) which later changed its name to Darkened. From 1990–1994 Dave worked at Peaceville Records as a graphic designer. Around 1993 Peaceville signed a U.S. distribution deal with Caroline, where Dave and Lyle Preslar worked together for over a year.
