Three days later, on Saturday October 5, the schools played again, with Yale beating Syracuse 11-0, Harvard over Bates 33-4, Navy handing a 15-0 loss on Dickinson, Pennsylvania beating Bucknell 29-2, and Carlisle beating Penn State 18-5 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. At West Point, the United States Military Academy (Army) opened its season with a 23-0 win over Franklin & Marshall.

RAF crews flew the Mosquito Mk XVII while crews from the 422nd NFS flew the P-61. In the end the USAAF determined that the P-61 had a slightly better rate of climb and could turn more tightly than the Mosquito. Colonel Winston Kratz, director of night fighter training in the USAAF, had organized a similar competition earlier. He said of the results: However, on 5 July 1944, General Spaatz ordered a competition be held between the P-61 – using an example from the 422nd which had its Double Wasp radials carefully "tuned up" for the competition – against a Mosquito NF.XVII, and Lieutenant Colonel Kratz made a $500 bet in favor of the Mosquito being a faster and more maneuverable night fighting platform.

Nashua followed up the Derby with wins in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in which Swaps did not compete because a split hoof wall in his right forefoot, incurred in January, had inflamed again. Returning to the West Coast, Swaps broke records all over the country at various distances, on turf and on dirt, and often under heavy weight. He also used a custom seven-string guitar tuned to (F#C#G#C#F#A#D#) on the Staind self-titled album as well as the debut Saint Asonia album.

The massive 44.5 litre Daimler-Benz DB 603 inverted V12 was selected to power the record-setting car. The engine was an increased displacement derivative of the famous DB-601 aircraft engine that powered the Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter in production at the time, with the DB 603 ending up as the largest displacement inverted V12 aviation engine in production for Germany during the World War II years. The DB-603 fitted was just the third prototype (V3) engine of this variant and tuned up to , roughly twice the power of the Bf 109 or the Supermarine Spitfire. The engine ran on a special mixture of methyl alcohol (63%), benzene (16%), ethanol (12%), acetone (4.4%), nitrobenzene (2.2%), avgas (2%), and ether (0.4%) with MW (methanol-water) injection for charge cooling and as an anti-detonant.

The Munsters spent Christmas 1916 in the trenches, but as the New Year arrived, an official report relates "as if by mutual consent both sides ceased fire a minute or two before the close of the old year. On the stroke of midnight the pipers tuned up and gave us The Old Year out and the New Year in, A Nation Once Again ,God Save Ireland, and a few more songs of the old country, N.C.O.s and men joining lustily in the choruses".

This allowed the entire "state" of the world to be swapped out, and allowed low-level system crashes which paralyzed the whole system to be debugged. This technique did not scale very well to large application images (several megabytes), and so the Pilot/Mesa world in later releases moved away from the world swap view when the micro-coded machines were phased out in favor of SPARC workstations and Intel PCs running a Mesa PrincOps emulator for the basic hardware instruction set. Mesa was compiled into a stack-machine language, purportedly with the highest code density ever achieved (roughly 4 bytes per high-level language statement). This was touted in a 1981 paper where implementors from the Xerox Systems Development Department (then, the development arm of PARC), tuned up the instruction set and published a paper on the resultant code density.

Other tunings are occasionally employed; the G string, for example, can be tuned up to A. The use of nonstandard tunings in classical music is known as scordatura; in some folk styles, it is called cross tuning. One famous example of scordatura in classical music is Camille Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre, where the solo violin's E string is tuned down to E to impart an eerie dissonance to the composition. Other examples are the third movement of Contrasts, by Béla Bartók, where the E string is tuned down to E and the G tuned to a G, and the Mystery Sonatas by Biber, in which each movement has different scordatura tuning. In Indian classical music and Indian light music, the violin is likely to be tuned to D–A–D–A in the South Indian style.

" In an interview with Tuned Up podcast, vocalist Joshua Gilbert and then bassist Josh Czech said that, on the split, Household continued to modify their sound, asking listeners to follow them again to another new sound, saying that "jump from Within and Without to Time Spent was a big jump, and the jump from Time Spent to the split is an even bigger jump." Gilbert said the new sound was in part influenced by his vocal condition, saying the sound that the band found on the split is the "last chapter in transition from something he shouldn't be doing to vocals he can sustain" in a healthy way. Some reviewers commented on Household's continual changing of sound, this time heading in the direction of emo. New Noise Magazine praised Household's side of the split, describing their three songs as "driving and punchy, saying that "their throwback emo/post-hardcore is as emotionally heavy as it musically engaging," commending the raw vocals.

" Other reviewers pointed to the raw and, at times, imperfect recordings as a factor in bolstering the band's energetic sound, as well as strengthening the themes of honesty and vulnerability that Household explored on the EP. Tuned Up and Indie Vision Music wrote that the band "seems to have complete control over their sound," and Indie Vision Music stated that the "rawness" and "bareness" of the album places them firmly in the category of "bands that are willing to be real with their words and their music and not allow their art to become synthesized and processed until it is indiscernible from 90 percent of their peers." Household was also praised for original and creative songwriting on With or Without with vulnerable lyrics that were upfront about the band's convictions. About the message of the album, Gilbert says, "With or Without was very much, 'This is what we believe and why.'" In a later interview with New Noise Magazine about the band's recording process, Gilbert said that they "wrote the EP in a basement when we had never played shows and we were just kids trying to write metal.
