If the number is low the serpent's chains are loosened and he is free to wander the earth causing havoc and destruction. If, on the other hand, the number of pysanky has increased, the chains are tightened and good triumphs over evil for yet another year.Воропай, Олекса. Звичаї Нашого Народу (Folk Customs of Our People) Київ: «Оберіг», 1993 Newer legends blended folklore and Christian beliefs and firmly attached the egg to the Easter celebration.
Lewis wrote: "No statement of Christian belief which does not include a supernatural reference...is a true statement."Edwin Lewis, A Christian Manifesto (Nashville: Abingdon-Cokesbury, 1934), p. 15 He followed A Christian Manifesto with A Philosophy of Christian Revelation and The Creator and the Adversary, both of which continued his reclamation of Christian orthodoxy from an Arminian perspective. Lewis argued that God triumphs over evil by outsuffering and outloving his adversary.
Livy records that with the campaign season now at an end, both consuls were rewarded at Rome with a triumph. The Carthaginians, with whom the Romans had concluded a treaty of friendship in 348, congratulated Rome with her victories by sending a golden crown weighing twenty-five pounds for the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.Livy, vii.34-38 The Fasti Triumphales record that Valerius and Cornelius celebrated their triumphs over the Samnites on 21 September and 22 September respectively.

In 1561 he carved Honour Triumphs over Falsehood, a statue 'in the round' - interesting to view from all angles. The marble for this statue was bought for him by his patron Danti Sforza Almeni for him to prove his skill. The statue was notable for the fact that it was carved from a single block of marble, something that took great skill to do. In 1567 he started writing a book about rules of order and proportion in architecture.
Khushal had written many poems mostly patriotic about his roots, about his tribe, about his nation and triumphs over invaders. Upon his retirement, his 57 sons began fighting for leadership. Meanwhile, the Mughals had bribed his son Behram Khan to arrest or to kill Khushal. Bahram joined forces with Mughals set to capture his father, and before he could do so, Khushal Khan fled into Afridi territory in Tirah assisted by his two sons Nusrat Khan and Gohar Khan.
Alias's explosives weaken the foundation of the statue and render it unstable. Alias encounters Repta again and once again triumphs over him, causing the energy field within Repta to reach critical mass. Alias and Tangier meet up and pursue Molov, who is scaling Sopot's statue with the nanotech cell – the culmination of Capek's research – and awaiting extraction from Shrike, Molov's subordinate. Shrike betrays his commanding officer, and Tangier manages to reclaim the nanotech cell from Molov's possession.
Throughout the remainder of the season, the Lions were undefeated, eventually meeting and once again defeating Essendon in the Grand Final for their sixteenth consecutive win, and the first AFL premiership in club history. The winning streak would eventually end at twenty games when they were defeated by the West Coast Eagles in early 2002. This would be the first of three consecutive premierships for the Lions. Matthews led Brisbane to consecutive triumphs over Collingwood in 2002 and 2003.
Sivaji Ganesan is a veteran actor of Tamil cinema. He started his acting career at the age of six and toured with various drama troupes including that of M. R. Radha. The actor himself was named Shivaji by Periyar E. V. Ramasami after his role portraying the Maratiya king in a play named Chandra Mohan. In Chandra Mohan the Maratiya king triumphs over Brahmins and the role of the villainous Brahmin was played by Annadurai himself.
Porridge was the first sitcom to take place in a prison; The Times said the show "was about what it took to survive in prison, the little day-to-day triumphs over the system that kept the prisoners sane." The opening sequence of the programme showed Fletcher being directed to his cell, as prison doors are locked behind him, all the while the judge can be heard pronouncing judgement and sentence. The judge's voice was performed by Barker.
In that poem the Sphinx triumphs over Oedipus. In a Freudian interpretation, it has been argued that the Sphinx represents the castrating effect of Moreau's mother that he has seeking to escape. At the time the painting was created, Moreau's father had recently died. By contrast, Henri Dorra has suggested that the poses of the sphinx and Oedipus are derived from the Greek etymological meaning of the word sphinx, which is to clutch, embrace, or cling to.
Months later, in June, Sampaoli was hired by Sport Boys to direct the team in the Torneo Descentralizado, debuting with a 3–1 loss to Coopsol. His side finished sixth in the tournament, achieving important triumphs over Alianza (1–0 with a goal of Alfredo Carmona) and Universitario (2–0 with goals by Paolo de la Haza and Carmona again at Estadio Monumental). He left the club during the 2003 Torneo Descentralizado, after a player's strike.
Ivkov narrowly missed becoming Yugoslav champion at Sombor 1957 when he scored 14/22 to share 2nd–4th places behind Gligoric. But he had a setback at the 1957 Wageningen Zonal tournament, failing to qualify for the Interzonal stage by making only 8½/17 for 9th position. He recovered with his first Yugoslav title at Sarajevo 1958, sharing the title with Gligoric on 12½/19. This victory set off a string of tournament triumphs over the next five years.

The performances his actors gave were invariable portrayals of personalities developed into recognizable images of popular culture, "their acting has the bold simplicity of an icon ..."Dickstein 2010, pp. 479–80. Like his contemporary, director John Ford, Capra defined and aggrandized the tropes of mythic America where individual courage invariably triumphs over collective evil. Film historian Richard Griffith speaks of Capra's "... reliance on sentimental conversation and the ultimate benevolence of ordinary America to resolve all deep conflicts."Dickstein 2010, p. 479.
Just before he is about to die, Charles looks at the Witch and begins to laugh hysterically. His laughter wounds her deeply and drives her away. He then follows Mr. Dark to the carnival to rescue the boys. At the carnival, Charles triumphs over Mr. Dark, finds his son in the mirror maze, kills the Witch with a smile on a bullet, and destroys all the mirrors in a matter of minutes, all through the use of laughter and cheer.

Triumphs over most notably Aston Brown of Scotland and Carl Hield of Bahrain saw Smith into the final only to be beaten by Northern Irish Paddy Gallagher.
By 1860, the Lakota and their allies had driven the Crows away from their treaty-guaranteed hunting grounds on the west side of Powder River.Serial 1308, 40th Congress, 1st Session, Vol. 1, Senate Executive Document 13, p. 127. The Lakota winter count by Ben Kindle (Oglala) reflects the fighting between the Crow and the Oglala during these decisive years. In five out of eight "winters" (years) from 1857 to 1864, he refers to Oglala triumphs over the Crow or the reverse.
The former middleweight champ was suspended for three years by the California State Athletic Commission after failing a post-fight drug test for steroids. Shlemenko's suspension was reduced to one year, making him eligible to compete in February of this year. Shlemenko has fought twice in 2016 under the M-1 Challenge banner, scoring consecutive triumphs over Vyacheslav Vasilevsky. Grove has been victorious in three of his last four Bellator appearances, including back-to-back stoppages of Francisco France and Joey Beltran.
While the masters naturally emphasise scholastic matters, for the pupils (and readership) it is physical activities that are at the heart of the school's ethos. Prowess at sports is the best route to popularity and respect, while over-attainment at study is something of lesser, if not negative, importance. Disputes are often settled by fights, with the invariable, if unrealistic, outcome that virtue triumphs over vice. Corporal punishment is widely used by the masters and by the Sixth Form prefects.
Effective 13 October 1917, probationary Temporary Second Lieutenant Solsoleil was confirmed in his rank. From November 1917 to July 1918, he flew a Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5a for 84 Squadron. He did not score his first victory until 13 January 1918, when he shot down the only two-seater reconnaissance plane that would ever fall before his guns. Over the next five months, he would accumulate triumphs over 13 German fighters, with his last win on 27 June 1918.
She follows the path of traditional Hindu rituals and practices to gain her husband. Appeased by her penance, Indra adopts her as his daughter and marries her to Kartikeya in an arranged marriage, following custom, after Kartikeya triumphs over the demons. The Kanda Purana describes Devayanai (Devasena) as the daughter of Indra, without any mention of adoption. The couple is described as taking their abode in the hills of Thiruttani, where one of Murugan's chief temples, Thiruthani Murugan Temple, stands.
54–62 Until the introduction of guns in the 15th century, traditional weapons like the spear and bow held sway. They Portuguese were the first to bring firearms, and by 1645, matchlock, wheelock and flintlock muskets were being imported into Benin. Firepower made the armies of Benin more efficient, and led to several triumphs over regional rivals. Efforts were made to reorganize a local guild of blacksmiths in the 18th century to manufacture light firearms, but dependence on imports was still heavy.
He then ran off a string of eight consecutive triumphs over German fighters during August, September, and October. On 3 October, he was injured; he returned to duty on the 14th. The day before the armistice, 10 November 1918, he destroyed a DFW C.V reconnaissance aircraft and a Fokker D.VII. Jenkins thus ended his war with a tally of two Fokker D.VIIs set afire in flight, five other German fighters destroyed, two German reconnaissance aircraft destroyed, and three enemy aircraft driven down out of control.
The count's interest apparently cooled, perhaps in part due to his many voyages out of Venice. The relationship broke off in 1551. Stampa went into a physical prostration and depression, but the result of this period is a collection of beautiful, intelligent and assertive poems in which she triumphs over Collaltino, creating for herself a lasting reputation. (Collaltino, meanwhile, is only remembered because of Stampa.) She makes clear in her poems that she uses her pain to inspire the poetry, hence her survival and fame.
Guillaume, a foundling supposed to be of low degree, is brought up at the court of the emperor of Rome, and loves the emperor's daughter Melior who is destined for a Greek prince. The lovers flee into the woods, disguised in bear-skins. Alfonso, who is Guillaume's cousin and a Spanish prince, has been changed into a wolf by his stepmother's enchantments. He provides food and protection for the fugitives, and Guillaume eventually triumphs over Alfonso's father, and wins back from him his kingdom.
The well preserved remains of an Iron Age specimen piques the professional interest of everyone in the lab. While Dr. Brennan and Zach start working on it, Booth brings in another case, skeletal remains of a victim that are dispersed around Los Angeles airport. Booth triumphs over Brennan's refusal to join the investigation in favor of the more scholarly forensics by dangling the attraction of a high profile Hollywood case to Brennan's superior, Dr. Goodman. Initial investigation reveals that the bones were scattered by coyotes to everyone's mild surprise.
Usually, there is a lesson learned, and with some help from the audience, the hero/heroine saves the day. This kind of play uses stock characters seen in masque and again commedia dell'arte, these characters include the villain (doctore), the clown/servant (Arlechino/Harlequin/buttons), the lovers etc. These plays usually have an emphasis on moral dilemmas, and good always triumphs over evil, this kind of play is also very entertaining making it a very effective way of reaching many people. Pantomime has a long theatrical history in Western culture dating back to classical theatre.
"Giant in My Heart" was positively received by contemporary music critics. Digital Spy's Amy Davidson awarded the song a three (out of five)-star rating and stated that it successfully showcased "the sheer power" in Kiesza's vocal abilities. Davidson felt that the track proved that the singer "has the potential to push boundaries and create sounds that stand apart from the acres of generic dance music that saturate the current state of music". Killian Young of Spin deemed the song "a gem" and opined that "Kiesza's commanding voice triumphs over the heartbreak".
The Thin Blue Line is set in the police station of the fictional English town of Gasforth. One of the main themes shows the uniformed squad led by Inspector Fowler and the CID led by Detective Inspector Grim locking horns over similar, or even the same, issues while having conflicting views or methods of operation. Generally the uniformed section triumphs over the detectives, although not without their own foibles. Although other PCs and staff than the main characters are visible in the background and at meetings they generally have no speaking parts.
He saves Violet from an obnoxious paparazzi and spots a Ferrari car, but Violet drives away with it. Skeeter realizes that only the children's additions to the stories come true. The night after that, Skeeter tells the children about a Greek chariot-riding stuntman, and the next day he ends up falling for his sister's friend and colleague Jill. On Skeeter’s last night with the children, he tells them a story in which he triumphs over Kendall, but the children add that someone kills him with a fireball.
This story is a superbly humorous play on James' common theme of how the imaginative "children of light" inevitably find trouble in the real, unforgiving world. Morris is something of an exception in that he triumphs over the world's attempts to grind him down...by giving the world exactly what it wants. The story illustrates T. S. Eliot's dictum that humankind cannot bear very much reality. But the story does not read at all as a grim reminder of how people would rather hear sweet fiction than sour fact.
Her novels were generally written in the style of sentimental family novels, with heroines in the style of the virtuous and tormented Clarissa by Richardson, and the motive a young love couple who triumphs over the obstacles in their way to a happy marriage. In Sweden, novels were until then normally foreign translations, hers was one of the first examples of knight- and bandit novels in the style of A. Radcliffe. »Lustresan» is mentioned as her perhaps most popular novel. She also wrote two plays, but failed to have them performed in 1842.
Again, by the movement of the hands to our right the enemies of God > will be driven out, as the Lord triumphs over the Devil with His > inconquerable power, rendering him dismal and weak. Theodoret (393–457) gave the following instruction: > This is how to bless someone with your hand and make the sign of the cross > over them. Hold three fingers, as equals, together, to represent the > Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. These are not > three gods, but one God in Trinity.
The second case shows actual military value: during the Great Gallic War the Gauls under Vercingetorix planned to lure the Roman armies into Gaul and then trap and obliterate them. They thus ravaged the countryside of what are now the Benelux countries and France. That caused immense problems for the Romans, but the Roman military triumphs over the Gallic alliance showed that alone not to be enough to save Gaul from subjugation by Rome. During the Second Punic War in 218–202 BC, the Carthaginians used the method selectively while storming through Italy.
In August 1826, Hazlitt and his wife set out for Paris again, so he could research what he hoped would be his masterpiece, a biography of Napoleon, seeking "to counteract the prejudiced interpretations of Scott's biography".In the words of biographer Ralph Wardle, p. 446. Hazlitt "had long been convinced that Napoleon was the greatest man of his era, the apostle of freedom, a born leader of men in the old heroic mould: he had thrilled to his triumphs over 'legitimacy' and suffered real anguish at his downfall".Wardle, p. 446.
Unhappy with the way his brother is leading a war causing distress to his gang, Sakkarai offers a truce to Dev. Dev initially seems to agree but, when Sakkarai comes out in the open, Dev shoots him to death – revealing that he considers the destruction of Veera as more important than saving his wife. Veera and Singarasu are enraged and attack Dev's camp; they wipe it out completely. A final confrontation between Veera and Dev takes place on a rickety bridge – where Veera triumphs over Dev – when he decides not to let Dev die.
Weiss followed that with four triumphs over enemy aircraft, the last of which, his tenth win, occurred on 13 March 1918.Above the Lines: The Aces and Fighter Units of the German Air Service, Naval Air Service and Flanders Marine Corps, 1914–1918, pp. 227-228 He was transferred to Royal Prussian Jasta 10 which was part of Manfred von Richthofen's "Flying Circus", Jagdgeschwader 1. The season began with a seven-game winning streak interrupted by a road loss to Manning's old team. Peyton Manning broke the all-time passing yardage record previously held by Brett Favre in a week nine home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the day's celebration was hollow as Manning was intercepted four times and ultimately benched during the game in favor of backup quarterback Brock Osweiler due to injury and a decline in performance. Osweiler helped the Broncos to five wins in seven starts in relief of the injured Manning, including overtime triumphs over eventual playoff teams Cincinnati and New England.
Tangier helps Alias escape, and shortly after fleeing to safety, Alias lends aid to surviving Red Faction members who are defending themselves from the enemy. Alias and Echo, another squadmember, meet up in a secret location to discuss an alternate strategy to stop Molov, and Echo is killed in action during a firefight with Quill, a former squadmember. Tangier radios Alias soon afterward, and the two agree to shut down Molov's commandeered nanotech laboratory located within the colossal statue of Sopot. Inside the laboratory, Alias triumphs over Repta, a former squadmember, and destroys the nanotech laboratory's power generators.
At the initiative of Mexico, the XXI Rio Summit and the II CALC summit were held together on 22–23 February 2010 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The joint summit was named the Latin American and Caribbean Unity Summit and the 32 attending states decided to create the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which would be formally established in 2011. Hugo Chávez, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Rafael Correa were among the other prominent left-wing leaders who praised the creation of CELAC.In Latin America, Rhetoric Triumphs Over Reality Estadao, Brazil, via translation by WorldMeets.
He comes to a grisly end in the ending of the poem: stripped of his skin and thrown to the swine. Reinardus, by contrast, represents the poor and the lowly; he triumphs over Ysengrimus by his wits. Nivardus deals with a subject that got extensive treatments in European popular culture during the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The characters Ysengrimus and Reinardus were clearly well developed by the time he wrote his epic; later treatments, however, usually featured Reynardus and relegated Ysengrimus the wolf to the menagerie of stock characters that served as Reynardus's supporting cast.
Guo Jia () (170–207), courtesy name Fengxiao, was an adviser to the warlord Cao Cao during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Throughout his 11 years of service, Guo Jia aided Cao Cao greatly with his brilliance and foresight, and his strategies were instrumental to Cao Cao's triumphs over rival warlords such as Lü Bu and Yuan Shao. For example, four years before Cao Cao's decisive victory over Yuan Shao at the Battle of Guandu, Guo Jia already foresaw that Cao Cao would win when he pointed out ten advantages Cao Cao had over Yuan Shao.
A work combining the elements of eroticism and propaganda is Minerva triumphs over Ignorance (Kunsthistorisches Museum), which shows Minverva (the Roman goddess of war, wisdom, arts and trade) with exposed breasts and a helmet treading down Ignorance, symbolised by a man with the ears of an ass. Bellona, another Roman goddess of war, and the nine Muses surround Minerva. The propaganda message is that the empire is safe with Rudolf at the helm so that the arts and trade can flourish.Marshall, P., The Mercurial Emperor: The Magic Circle of Rudolf II in Renaissance Prague, Random House, 28 November 2013, pp. 68-69.
" - THE STRAITS TIMES "The True Singapore Ghost Stories by Russell Lee is to Singapore what manga is to Japan." - THE OFFICIAL SINGAPORE GUIDE & MAP "Angsana’s Russell Lee and his team of ghost writers are highly popular, judging by the number of times that the volumes in the True Singapore Ghost Stories series — published by Flame Of The Forest — have hit the bestseller lists of major bookshops in town since the series was launched in 1989." - THE STRAITS TIMES "Morality and the positive have a firm place in Angsana’s True Singapore Ghost Stories. By 2012 the book had already sold a million copies in Europe. Arifa Akbar (The Independent) noted that the "sly" and "riveting" novel seems to head in one direction, then "is galloping down another, unexpected path" and finds that it "may thrill, chill or cheat", whereby its "spectacular style triumphs over substance". The book was twice reviewed by The New York Times. Janet Maslin found the morality of the story "really sickening", none of the four characters at the dinner is "really sane" and compared it negatively to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl where the characters are vicious but also sympathetic.
Jackie's friendships tend to be complicated. While people might be endeared to her good heart and her triumphs over major life upheavals, her habit of being condescending to others keeps them at a distance. Although she frequently criticizes Donna's dress, physique and feminism, she repeatedly calls herself Donna's best friend ever since they first met in 1973 when Jackie first came to Point Place and Donna hit her with a ball in the gymnasium. Even though she thinks Donna is boring and unattractive when compared to herself, she believes Donna could do much better than Eric.
She described his sound as "classic", "authentic" and "super soulful". While after she went in Jamaica to work on reggae material with Di Genius on the track "Don't Leave Me", she called it as a "real moment on the album". By 2011, she collaborated with Darkchild, who produced the bulk of the album; Furtado spoke on working with him saying, "I feel like a child in a playground, uninhibited and happy". The first track they worked on was "Spirit Indestructible", which she called an "ode to the spirit which resides in all of us and triumphs over anything".
Panels lack traditional frames and characters are neither simply good nor evil. The characters are depicted neither as purely good or evil: for example, Rosie in "The Super" triumphs over the racist, abusive superintendent by stealing his money, having him framed for pedophilia, and driving him to suicide. Confinement is a prominent theme; Eisner chooses perspectives through which the reader views the characters framed by doorways, window frames, or sheets of rain. Frimme Hersh seeks freedom from oppressive Eastern European antisemitism; there is a feeling of elation for characters in the final story as they find their way out of the tenement's, and the city's, confinement.
Mark Stent was praised for his production on the song, creating a "trippy" feel like that found on Beatles songs such as "Rain". With the psychedelic and Eastern sound, the song also reminds of George Harrison achievements like "Within You Without You" and also some of his solo work. However, despite the acclaimed production, the song itself was not well received by the critics, with NME stating that the production "triumphs over any real sort of feeling... pure mock Maharishi spirituality that not even Liam can salvage from the realm of self-parody". One of the B-sides is a cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter".
The cast of local singers, fringe actors and musicians seems to have absorbed the complexities of the highly moral plot where regeneration triumphs over evil and all optimists ultimately defeat the pessimists. The story-line is less important than the ambitious and resonant songs and music. The length of the Old Profanity boat is cunningly exploited by the marine set...and deserves to be seen in London on dry land at a larger venue." The Bristol Evening Post’s theatre critic David Harrison said, "Stinkfoot is a joy – a wondrous collection of bizarre characters, eccentric ideas, and at least one top ten contender among the songs.
Act III shows Orion's resolution to betray his friend Pallantus in favour of love. The monologue of Orion that begins act IV marks a shift of the libretto to a darker tone, while the hunter prepares the "sad and pompous Celebration" of the marriage of his "Rival". In act V, the horror that Orion feels when looking at the altar of sacrifice is overcome by his desire to "defy even Jupiter". This aspect also appears in the character of Perseus who, faced with difficult trials, confronts and triumphs over his obstacles with courage (although in the character of Perseus, courage manifests itself more by action than by speech).

It is claimed that the song was considered as a replacement of "Dąbrowski's Mazurka" (Poland Is Not Yet Lost) as the national anthem of Polish People's Republic."Czarownik Gałczyński", Wprost, March 2, 2003 Reminiscent of this and other songs of the Socialist past, Janusz Józefowicz directed the musical play Beloved Country... or Polish People's Republic in Songs (pl) premiered in in 2001.
Siegfried Kracauer said by coupling a fantasy in which Francis overthrows a tyrannical authority with a reality in which authority triumphs over Francis, Caligari reflects a double aspect of German life, suggesting they reconsider their traditional belief in authority even as they embrace it. A contrast between levels of reality exists not only in the characterizations, but in the presentation of some of the scenes as well. This, Barlow writes, "reveals a contrast between external calm and internal chaos". For example, flashback scenes when Francis reads Caligari's diary, in which the doctor is shown growing obsessed with learning hypnotic powers, take place as Caligari is sleeping peacefully in the present.
The Huskies have experienced large amounts of success in the national spotlight, defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Iowa State Cyclones,Purdue, Northwestern, Nebraska, and the Maryland Terrapins. Because of the Huskies success, NIU averaged the highest attendance per game in the MAC between 2004-2006. In recent years, the football program has generated national headlines for the institution. With seven consecutive winning seasons (best in the MAC), NIU has the 25th best record in the nation since 2000 (53-30)---including triumphs over Bowl Championship Series programs such as Wake Forest, Minnesota, University of Alabama, Kansas, University of Maryland, Purdue University (2009, 2013), Iowa, and Iowa State University among others.
In the prologue, in a scenic design which represented the stage of the Opéra, Thalia, the muse of Comedy, triumphs over Melpomene, the muse of Tragedy. This dramatic conceit resulted in a succès de scandale, obliging La Font to immediately prepare a revised opening entitled "La critique des fêtes de Thalie" (presented on 9 October). In the 1720 edition the title was changed to Les fêtes de Thalie, and in 1722 a new opening was added, "La provençale", which featured regional costumes, instruments, and well-known melodies sung in the Provençal dialect. The 1722 version proved to be more acceptable and very popular, and continued to be performed up until 1778.
Within its first decade of its availability, sales of the HS 748 had reportedly been relatively brisk; by 1976, the sale of 312 aircraft had been recorded, of which 259 had been to export customers. Within ten years of its launch, India had emerged as the largest single market for the airliner, Indian Airlines being the largest HS 748 operator with a fleet of 26 aircraft. It had been popular with numerous commercial operators, across the Caribbean and Latin America alone, 63 HS 748s were in operation with 11 separate operators. The HS 748 had been able to achieve some triumphs over competing rivals, including the F27 Friendship.
In his review in The New York Times, Vincent Canby wrote that the film "defies easy definition and blithely triumphs over what initially appears to be structural schizophrenia." Canby noted the performances of Belmondo, Deneuve, and Bouquet, which were "played with marvelous style." Canby concluded: In his review in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1999, film critic Edward Guthmann praised the film, writing: The film, however, had many detractors. Dennis Schwartz, for example, wrote: On the review aggregator web site Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an 85% positive rating from top film critics based on 13 reviews, and a 71% positive audience rating based on 2,387 user ratings.
Dafoe next had a small role in the French thriller Farewell as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and co- starred opposite Michael Shannon in Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?, in which he played a detective attempting to figure out why a troubled man killed his own mother. Dafoe played a former vampire who has a cure that can save the human species in the science fiction horror film Daybreakers, which starred Ethan Hawke as a vampire hematologist. Richard Corliss of Time magazine wrote that Dafoe "triumphs over some awful dialogue by giving the role his nutsy-greatsy weirdness".

Unlike the stories that may have influenced Pope Gregory's structure of the biography, Benedict's victories are practical, preventing Satan from stopping work on the abbey at Monte Cassino. Benedict's prayers are portrayed as the driving force behind the building of the abbey and the triumphs over Satan, through prayer: "Benedict the monk wrests from the devil a well-determined base which he never leaves." After the completion of the abbey, Satan's appearances in the story diminish back to the same level as Subiaco, "Only after the saint's death and by God's permission would other enemies, the Lombards, succeed in sacking it." Once established at Monte Cassino, Benedict never left.

The character has a shrewish maiden aunt (Auntie Mayhem) who is indirectly responsible for her nephew becoming a superhero: In a fit of pique, she slams the fabled cooking pot over Irving's head, inadvertently providing him with the disguise he'd been looking for. The fictional October 13, 1939, edition of the Daily Bugle claims an "Irving Forbush" was born on Friday the 13th, his parents Stan and Jacqueline wanting a daughter instead. George Alexander and Irene Vanbrugh in His House in Order, 1906 In the first decade of the century Pinero continued to be regarded as among the forefront of British playwrights. The poet W. H. Auden, an early supporter of Lord of the Rings, wrote in the Tolkien Journal that good triumphs over evil in the War of the Ring, but the Three Rings lose their power, as Galadriel had prophesied: "If you succeed, then our power is diminished, and Lothlórien will fade, and the tide of time will sweep it away". Hood further writes that Tolkien was suggesting technology such as the making of Rings of Power is in itself neither good nor evil; both the Elves and Sauron (with his armies of orcs) use that technology, as they also both make and wear swords and mail armour, and shoot with bows.
Bernardo de' Dominici described this painting in the third volume of his Vite dei Pittori, Scultori, ed Architetti Napolitani (1742) as "a miracle of art, executed with such power of truth that it triumphs over whatever work is near it". Battistello Caracciolo had made a copy of this painting, now lost. It is not known whether this painting is the same as the present; some time after Bernardo de' Dominici remarked on it, it was removed and presumably sold. Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1672) wrote "it depicts the serving maid pointing to Peter, who turns with open hands in the act of denying Christ; and it is painted in nocturnal light with other figures warming themselves at a fire ".

A Roman auriga In ancient Rome, the auriga was a slave with gladiator status, whose duty it was to drive a biga, the light vehicle powered by two horses, to transport some important Romans, mainly duces (military commanders). An auriga was a sort of "chauffeur" for important men and was carefully selected from among trustworthy slaves only. It has been supposed also that this name was given to the slave who held a laurel crown, during Roman Triumphs, over the head of the dux, standing at his back but continuously whispering in his ears "" ("remember you are mortal") to prevent the celebrated commander from losing his sense of proportion in the excesses of the celebrations. The term became common in later times to indicate any biga driver.

Make Love, Not War: The Sexual Revolution: An Unfettered History by David Allyn (Routledge, 2001), Chapter 3 () at The pill divorced contraception from the act of intercourse itself, making it more socially acceptable, and easier to tolerate for many detractors than other types of contraception (which had been around for years). Heralded as a technological marvel, the pill was a trusted product of science in an increasingly technological age, and was heralded as one of man's 'triumphs' over nature. It was often said that with the invention of the pill, the women who took it had immediately been given a new freedom—the freedom to use their bodies as they saw fit, without having to worry about the burden of unwanted pregnancy.
Albert Camus. M. 1990. p 335 (Russian edition) Elsewhere, Camus draws our attention to the creative nature of human beings’ a priori capacity, when he says that works of art present us with “an imaginary world which, however, constitutes a correction to the real world... The novel shapes fate using a pre-prepared mould. In this way, the novel competes with God’s creation and at least temporarily triumphs over death.”.L’Homme Revolte. Albert Camus. M. 1990. p 325 (Russian edition) As we see, both in the world of art and the world of real reforms, human beings are constantly creating, “organising chaos”, lending it a form that reflects their perceptions, and over time, in the form of the reformers, reproducing these perceptions (or ideas) in reality.
In the 6th century BC, according to Livy, Rome's sixth king Servius Tullius went to war with Veii (after the expiry of an earlier truce) and with the rest of the Etruscans. Little is said of the war, except that the king was conspicuous for his valour and good fortune, that he routed a great army of the Etruscans and Veientes, and that the war helped cement his position at Rome, he having only recently become king.Livy, 1:42 According to the Fasti Triumphales, Servius celebrated three triumphs over the Etruscans, including on 25 November 571 BC and 25 May 567 BC (the date of the third triumph is not legible on the Fasti). Livy records that during the reign of Servius' successor, Tarquinius Superbus, Rome renewed a treaty with the Etruscans.

" One reviewer wrote, "The stories in This Is How You Lose Her, by turns hilarious and devastating, raucous and tender, lay bare the infinite longing and inevitable weaknesses of our all-too-human hearts. They capture the heat of new passion, the recklessness with which we betray what we most treasure, and the torture we go through – "the begging, the crawling over glass, the crying" – to try to mend what we've broken beyond repair. They recall the echoes that intimacy leaves behind, even where we thought we did not care ... Most of all, these stories remind us that the habit of passion always triumphs over experience, and that "love, when it hits us for real, has a half-life of forever". In 2012, Diaz received a $500,000 MacArthur "Genius grant" award.
The hero's centipede-slaying legend as contained in the Tawara Tōda monogatari ("The Tale of Tawara Tōda") was widely circulated and read during the early Edo Period (17th century), when the text was being copied in picture scrolls (emaki) and appearing in Otogizōshi type woodblock- printed (and hand-copied) books. A summary of the monogatari version is as follows: The monogatari version probably derives from earlier accounts of Hidesato's centipede slaying described in the 14th-century Taiheiki, expanded with layers of legendary and religious (Buddhist) motifs. The above summary is not the entirety of Tawara Tōda monogatari, which contains a second part where the hero triumphs over Taira no Masakado, despite the latter having an iron body which was invulnerable except at the temples on his head, and having six ghostly doubles of himself.
Ruler Y was a Maya king of Calakmul. He is also known as Ruler 8 and Bolon K'awiil I. He reigned >741>. His monuments are stelae 25, 26, 27, 59 and 60. It is possible that this king ordered in AD 741 the erection of five imposing stelae at Calakmul, but damage to the glyphs precludes reading of the commissioning ruler’s name,Historical Dictionary of Mesoamerica by Walter R. T. Witschey,Clifford T. Brown and it is possible that they are actually commissions of Wamaw K'awiil (possible father of Ruler Y).Martin and Grube 2008:114 It was around this very time that Tikal consolidated its victories over Calakmul by Jasaw Chan K'awiil (695) and Yik'in Chan K'awiil (c. 736); the latter’s triumphs over El Peru in 743 and Naranjo in 744 effectively spelled the end of hegemony of Calakmul.

One of Handel's most loyal supporters, Mary Delany, lamented in a letter to a friend: > Yesterday I was at the rehearsal of the new opera composed by Handel: I like > it extremely, but the taste of the town is so depraved, that nothing will be > approved of but the burlesque. The Beggar's Opera entirely triumphs over the > Italian one. I have not yet seen it, but everybody that has seen it, says it > is very comical and full of humour.
In 1961 he returned to Western Australia where spent the entire season playing with West Perth, during which time he also represented Western Australia at the 1961 Brisbane Australian National Football Council Carnival, playing at centre-half back (and, in the process, he completely nullified South Melbourne's champion centre half-forward Jim Taylor) in the West Australian team that not only (unexpectedly) defeated the Victorian representative team 15.14 (104) to 14.11 (95) in "a fiercely fought match", but also, through that victory, won the ANFC Carnival title.Carter, R., "W.A. In the foreword, she says, "[I] have reserved for myself the right to explore hunches and draw upon personal intuitions as I interpret and evaluate data", a methodology criticized by political scientist Marc Q. Sawyer, who comments, "While I laud this break with convention, frequently these hunches either lead to faulty conclusions or foreclose the opportunity for consideration of alternative explanations in this work. One can disagree with Swain's normative vision, but when that vision triumphs over social scientific evidence and fails to live up to its claims for social justice, it is legitimate to critique that vision itself". Sawyer contends Swain ignores important African-American institutions and the variety in thought among African-American scholars, that she misses and misinterprets statistical information, and that, in the end, "despite claims of a normative focus, Swain is largely on the side of the white nationalists", apologizing for "racist beliefs and practices". In 2003, she edited Contemporary Voices of White Nationalism with Princeton University Professor Russell K. Nieli.
Andy McFarlane scored an own goal when the ball rebounded off the crossbar then into the net off his knee to give West Brom a lifeline, and two early goals in the second leg gave the Baggies the advantage, until midfielder Micky Mellon was sent off. Burrows threw on Colin West, however within minutes of coming on the former West Brom striker was sent off, and ended any hopes of a Wembley final. Although the league campaign the following season did not live up the previous one, mainly due to the sale of key players, Burrows guided the Swans to Wembley for the first time in their history for the final of the Autoglass Trophy. Wins over Plymouth Argyle & Exeter City in the group stage followed by triumphs over Exeter again, Port Vale, Leyton Orient and Wycombe Wanderers over two legs saw the Swans play Huddersfield Town in a final that finished 1–1.
This king acceded in his thirty-sixth year, but there are indications that he may have effectively governed the kingdom for a substantial period before this on behalf of the previous king, Yuknoom the Great.Martin and Grube 2008:110 The latter, who may have been Yuknoom Yichʼaak Kʼahk's father, lived well into his eighties and may have been incapacitated in his later years. Calakmul, city of Yuknoom Yichʼaak Kʼahkʼ The inscription of Stela 9, from 662, goes into great detail about the birth of Yuknoom Yichʼaak Kʼahkʼ and accords him a full royal title; thus military victories in the following years, as well as successful assertions of Kaan's hegemony, might tentatively be ascribed to Yichʼaak Kʼahkʼ. These include military triumphs over Tikal in 677 and (quite probably) 679; supervision of the accessions of kings of Moral and Cancuen in 662 and 677 respectively; the dispatching of Lady Six Sky from Dos Pilas to re-seed the dynasty of Naranjo in 682, and a lieutenant's action expressive of Kaan overlordship at Piedras Negras in 685.
