By the late 1950s, along with Felix Alderisio, Nicoletti was one of the most feared triggermen in Chicago and was drawing attention from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Chicago police. According to Pat Garrett's biography of Billy the Kid, McNab shot McCloskey in the head when he tried to stop the imminent execution of Morton and Baker, who then spurred their mounts and tried to escape before being gunned down by Billy the Kid. McNab was one of the triggermen in the killing of Sheriff Brady and his deputy George W. Hindman in Lincoln on April 1, 1878, and was present three days later when they shot it out with Buckshot Roberts. Upon Dick Brewer's death, McNab was elected captain of the Regulators.

Dodd, who had the support of Essex County Democratic organization under County Chairman Harry Lerner. With Gibson and Hawkins splitting the anti-organization vote, Dodd won the nomination and the subsequent general election. In 1975, at the request of then New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne, who was reviewing a request to issue executive clemency for Rubin Carter and John Artis, both convicted of a triple-murder case in Paterson, New Jersey, on June 17, 1966. Hawkins, assisted by investigator Prentiss Thompson, issued "The Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter and John Artis Investigation" concluding that the triggermen were not Carter and Artis, but Eddie Rawls and Elwood Tuck, predominantly based upon one witness's recollection of the murders, after the first trial of Carter and Artis.

Erich Fritz Emil Mielke (; 28 December 1907 – 21 May 2000) was a German communist official who served as head of the East German Ministry for State Security (Ministerium für Staatsicherheit – MfS), better known as the Stasi, from 1957 until shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. A native of Berlin and a second-generation member of the Communist Party of Germany, Mielke was one of two triggermen in the 1931 murders of Berlin Police Captains Paul Anlauf and Franz Lenck. After learning that a witness had survived, Mielke escaped arrest by fleeing to the Soviet Union, where the NKVD recruited him. Afraid that gang boss Tom Egan would find out about his disloyalty, Cherries Dunn became increasingly paranoid and killed people over trivial reasons, including William "Skippy" Rohan, a lifelong friend of Tom Egan's. Harry Dunn would eventually be killed by the Egan mob at the Typo Press Club on September 19, 1916. Upon his parole in 1917, John "Pudgy" Dunn swore to kill Willie Egan and everyone else connected to his brother's murder, specifically the two triggermen, Walter Costello and Frank "Gutter" Newman. The gang war between the Egan's Rats and Bottoms Gang was raging in the summer of 1917 when Pudgy got even with one of Harry's killers, Gutter Newman, whom he shot and killed in front of the house at 3323 Lucas Avenue on June 8, 1917.
