Hand tremblers act as medical diagnosticians and are sometimes called upon in order to verify an illness by drawing on divine power within themselves as received from the Gila monster. Typical services can be provided in the form of songs, prayers, and herb usage. During a diagnosis a hand trembler traces symbols in the dirt while holding a "trembling arm" over the patient. Movement of the arm signifies a new drawn symbol or a possible identification to the cause of illness.

They have long, strong legs (for passerines) with which many species hop through undergrowth searching for arthropods and fruits to eat. Their habitat varies from forest undergrowth to scrub, high-altitude grasslands, and deserts. The two tremblers live in the atypical habitat of rain forests in the Lesser Antilles, and the brown trembler has the particularly atypical behavior of foraging while clinging to tree trunks. All known species build somewhat messy, bulky twig nests in dense growth, in most species on the ground or no more than 2 meters up.

Yuta (sanjinsou, "tremblers"; Yonaguni munuchi, "one who knows"; Miyako kamigakaryaa, "one who acts as a home for the gods") are individuals who claim to possess an especially strong ability to communicate with the dead. The name "yuta" was originally pejorative, derived from tokiyuta, or "one who deceived"; indeed, since the establishment of a united Ryūkyū Kingdom, their practices have been discouraged and repressed. They are employed in response to psychic disturbance or the possibility thereof. Whereas the noro is the official spiritual guide of the whole community, the yuta deals personally with families and individual paying clients to determine what spiritual circumstances have brought about or will bring about good or ill.

Noone led a short-lived group called the Tremblers that toured in 1980 and released one album, Twice Nightly. Along with Noone, the members of the band were Greg Inhofer (keyboards), Robert Williams (drums, formerly with the Pop), George Conner (lead guitar), and Mark Browne (bass). According to the liner notes of the album, several musicians provided "licks & tricks," including members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, Elton John's backing band, Daryl Dragon, Phil Seymour and Dave Clark. Modern Recording magazine reviewed the album negatively, saying the music bogged down in "power pop careening into bubblegum" songs that were not different enough from each other: adolescent lyrics delivered at the same fast tempo, recorded with an uninteresting, barely stereo sound field.

Kenny Aaronson took over in 1983, followed by Rob Alter, before MacGregor returned for a brief second tenure. By the end of 1984, Peverett had left to return to England, marking a temporary hiatus for the band. Earl, MacGregor and Cartwright continued performing under the name The Knee Tremblers with keyboardist and vocalist Jon Roberge, although by 1986 they had reverted to the Foghat moniker, adding new frontman Eric Burgeson. MacGregor had left again by the end of the year to pursue a solo career, with Cartwright's brother Brett and later Jeff Howell serving as his subsequent replacements. Burgeson was replaced by Phil Nudelman in 1988, who was later replaced by Billy Davis.
