A Gladstone bag, a light travelling bag, is named after him.The Secret Agent, by Joseph Conrad, , on notes of chapter IX, at p. 256. Gladstone's burial in 1898 was commemorated in a poem by William McGonagall. There is a scene in the Turkish film Free Man about Islamic scholar Said Nursi who is deeply troubled by Gladstone.

Reconstruction-era carpet bag A carpet bag is a top-opening travelling bag made of carpet, commonly from an oriental rug. It was a popular form of luggage in the United States and Europe in the 19th century, featuring simple handles and only an upper frame, which served as its closure. Some small modern versions are used as handbags or purses.

English actress Jane Birkin, the eponymous inspiration for the bag (1985) In 1983, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. Birkin had just placed her straw travelling bag in the overhead compartment for her seat, but the contents fell to the deck, leaving her to scramble to replace them. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. Dumas took this encounter as inspiration to create a supple black leather bag, based on a 1982 design.

As described in a film magazine, George Howell (Washburn), a young lawyer, sadly separates himself from his bride Ottilie (Wilson) on the second day after their wedding to fulfill a commission from his friend Ned Pembroke (Milham) to recover some incriminating love letters in the possession of a San Francisco showgirl. Ned will not propose to Daphne (Howell), Ottilie's sister, until the letters are safe in his hands. Allowing his wife to believe that he has gone to San Diego, George goes to San Francisco. On the return trip he accidentally exchanges his travelling bag with a crook who has stolen a wealthy woman's jewels.

In 1933, Otto Haas filed a patent for the Patria Typewriter. In it, Otto Haas described his thoughts on his concept for a truly portable/compact typewriter. “In order to fully meet the requirements connected with the construction of an easily portable or travelling typewriter it is necessary to pay regard to the aforementioned conditions in a far greater measure than has heretofore been done in practice. For the purpose in view the dimensions of the typewriter and its parts must be kept so small, that it may conveniently be carried in a small travelling bag, and, accordingly, the weight of the typewriter must be quite considerably reduced, as compared with herefore constructed portable typewriters”.

As with every morning since he moved into Savile Row, Willy Fog awakens at 8:00 am and rings for his servant, only to remember that he fired him the previous day for his inability to follow Fog's precise schedule. He has already arranged an interview for a replacement – former circus performer Rigodon, who is even now rushing towards Fog's house to make his 11:00 am appointment. Rigodon is accompanied by his old circus colleague Tico, who hides within his travelling bag, and prompts him through the interview, which gets off to a bad start when Rigodon arrives four minutes late. Nonetheless, Rigodon is hired by Fog as his butler and soon departs for the Reform Club. At the club, the main topic of conversation is the recent theft of £55,000 from the Bank of England which was discussed till the bank's governor Mr. Sullivan arrives and requests a change of topic.
