After stepping down as mayor in 1984, Eilertsen became involved in medicine once again, working with the organization and financing of Norwegian hospitals and trauma centres. He retired from politics and medicine in 1989. Eilertsen remained in Bergen after his retirement, where he died on 24 February 2014, the day before his 96th birthday, of natural causes.

Ayub Teaching Hospital (Urdu, Hindko: , , abbreviated as ATH), is a public sector, non-profit tertiary level academic health sciences centre located in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Established in 1998, ATH has one of the largest trauma centres in the region serving the northeastern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, southern Gilgit-Baltistan and the northern districts of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The hospital also serves as the chief teaching hospital of Ayub Medical College.

In the English NHS a serious shortage of specialist beds was identified by a review in December 2016. There were 393 and 54 additional beds were required. Patients waited an average of 52 days for a bed on a specialist ward in 2015-16. This meant patients were “inappropriately” occupying beds at major trauma centres. It was suggested that NHS England’s specialised commissioning division would be unable to fund the recommendations.

It was established by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1892, with the founding goal of taking care of the sick and poor of Toronto's inner city. The hospital provides tertiary and quaternary services in cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, inner city health and therapeutic endoscopy. In 2001 a new psychiatric unit opened in the grounds of the hospital taking over some of the functions of Royal Dundee Liff Hospital. The system was formed through the merger of the former Grace Hospital, Ottawa Riverside Hospital, Ottawa General Hospital and Ottawa Civic Hospital. It is the largest trauma centre in Canada and one of two trauma centres in Toronto; the other being St. Michael's Hospital. Sunnybrook is a teaching hospital, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The hospital is home to Canada's largest veterans centre, located in the Kilgour Wing and the George Hees Wing of the hospital, where World War II and Korean War veterans are cared for.

He was the co-founder of the then unique 24-hour consultant- resident Oxford Trauma Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford in 1994. Building on that model, in 2009 he was appointed the first National Clinical Director for Trauma Care to the Department of Health charged with developing and implementing government policy across the NHS to improve the care of older people with fragility hip fractures and to establish Regional Trauma Networks and Major Trauma Centres. Hospitals in Ukraine are organised along the same lines as most European nations, according to the regional administrative structure; as a result most towns have their own hospital (Міська Лікарня) and many also have district hospitals (Районна Лікарня). Larger and more specialised medical complexes tend only to be found in major cities, with some even more specialised units located only in the capital, Kyiv. However, all oblasts have their own network of general hospitals which are able to deal with almost all medical problems and are typically equipped with major trauma centres; such hospitals are called 'regional hospitals' (Обласна Лікарня). Ukraine currently faces a number of major public health issues and is considered to be in a demographic crisis because of its high death rate and low birth rate (the current Ukrainian birth rate is 11 births/1,000 population, and the death rate is 16.3 deaths/1,000 population).
