If more than a handful of people ever get to explore Mars in person, surely one day someone will follow its tracks down Perseverance, looking for the mast on which its cameras are mounted—separated for stereoscopy, easily anthropomorphised—to honour a pioneer who travelled far and provided insight after insight into the history of Mars.

But the book does flag, tellingly if briefly, when, near the end, she turns the story over to fellow-addicts, in particular four people she tracks down who had once passed through Seneca House, a "rag tag rehab" established in the nineteen-seventies in a converted motel on the banks of the Potomac River in Maryland.

In the course of watching the first — in which Arnold tracks down tapes of Trump's appearance on Howard Stern's radio show, tapes that he gets from clandestine operatives in a motel room in the middle of the night, but which he probably could have just torrented if he really wanted them — I was pretty sure the episode was just wrapping up, only to realize it hadn't even reached its first commercial break.
