A common helium-filled toy balloon is something familiar to many. When such a balloon is fully filled with helium, it has buoyancy—a force that opposes gravity. When a toy balloon becomes partially deflated, it often becomes neutrally buoyant and can float about the house a meter or two off the floor. In such a state, there are moments when the balloon is neither rising nor falling and—in the sense that a scale placed under it has no force applied to it—is, in a sense perfectly weightless (actually as noted below, weight has merely been redistributed along the Earth's surface so it cannot be measured).

A balloon helicopter is a flying toy consisting of a latex toy balloon and a plastic propeller, derived from the simple balloon rocket. The most important feature is the hollow propeller hub which directs air into a passage in each propeller blade. Ted Healy is a salesman for the Schmidt Costume Shop who likes to hang out at the fire station where Moe (billed as "Harry Howard"), Larry, and Shemp (along with Fred Sanborn) work. Old man Schmidt spends more time building crazy inventions (typical of devices by writer/cartoonist Rube Goldberg) than tending to his business; as a consequence he is bankrupt and his business is taken over by his creditors, who send a young man named Carlson to manage the business. Carlson immediately falls for Mr. Schmidt's niece, Louise, but she resists him. Meanwhile, a certain General Avocado wants to organize a revolution in San Stevedore and comes to the costume shop to order uniforms; sadly his army flees in fright without paying at the sound of a child bursting a toy balloon.

Following the success of “I Love Onions”, Susan Christie and John Hill attempted to market two more pop-novelty singles through Columbia Records: “Tonight You Belong To Me” with b-side “Toy Balloon” released April 24, 1967 and “All I Have To Do Is Dream” paired with b-side “Anywhere You Are”, released October 17, 1967. Unfortunately, neither single made the charts, and Christie was also growing tired of the breathy pop style she was becoming associated with. Bootlegs and vinyl rips of these songs circulated the internet for years before they finally received an official re-release as part of the Columbia Singles album on March 16, 2018. Their success started to turn around however, when the pair were offered an album deal through ABC-Paramount. “This wonderful opportunity came for us to do things the way we would like to do them,” Christie would later say.
