Born Leonida Plămădeală, he received the name of Antonie when he was tonsured a monk in 1948. He was friends with the Romanian philosopher Constantin Noica, and spoke at his funeral.

Potapy Emelianov was born into a family of Priestless Old Believers who were later received into the Old Ritualists by the Russian Orthodox Bishop of Ufa, Anthony (Khrapovitsky). Bossuet was born at Dijon. He came from a family of prosperous Burgundian lawyers – on both his paternal and maternal side, his ancestors had held legal posts for at least a century. He was the fifth son born to Beneigne Bossuet, a judge of the parlement (a provincial high court) at Dijon, and Marguerite Mouchet. His parents decided on a career in the church for their fifth son, so he was tonsured at age eight.

The Most Reverend Kyrill (secular name Ilia Manchov Yonchev, ; February 26, 1920, Panagyurishte, Bulgaria - June 17, 2007, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was the archbishop of the Orthodox Church in America's Diocese of Western Pennsylvania and Bulgarian Diocese. In 1940 he graduated from the Saint John of Rila Theological Seminary in Sofia. On January 19, 1941, he was tonsured to monastic orders and given the name Kyrill. The following day, he was ordained to the diaconate.

Nikon of the Black Mountain (born 1025, died 1105) was a Byzantine soldier, monk and author. Born at Constantinople around 1025 to a family of archontes, Nikon served in the army under Constantine IX (). He never received a formal education and considered himself "simple, uncultivated and completely ignorant". Acting on a vision of the Virgin Mary, he retired to a monastery on the Black Mountain founded by Luke, the former metropolitan of Anazarbos, who also tonsured him.

Dethroned Visigothic kings were tonsured and sent to a monastery so that they could not claim the crown back. During the civil war in Greece, Arsenios served as a radio operator. In 1950, having completed his service, he went to Mount Athos: first to Father Kyril, the future abbot of Koutloumousiou monastery, and then to Esphigmenou Monastery (although he was not supportive of their later opposition to the Ecumenical Patriarchate). He was instrumental in securing the recall of Michael's uncle Bardas from exile, culminating in the death of Theoktistos and the assumption of control over state affairs by Bardas in 855. In 865, however, he fell out with Bardas, who began scheming against him, and persuaded Michael to dismiss him and have him tonsured. On December 5, 1997 Metropolitan Panteleimon (Rodopoulos) of Tyrolois and Serention tonsured him a monk with the name Hilarion in honour of Hilarion the Great. On December 21 of same year he ordained him to the rank of hierodeacon. On September 14, 2000 he ordained him to the rank of hieromonk. Hieromonk Hilarion continued his theological studies in Canon Law and took a Masters in 2001, successfully defending his thesis "Canonical relations between the Metropolis of Kyiv and the Ecumenical Patriarchate until 1240".

Gerasim Zelić was born on 11 June 1752 in Žegar, Bukovica, in northern Dalmatia, some 30 miles east of Zadar, then part of the Habsburg Monarchy. He owed his monastic name (Gerasim) to a vow which his mother, driven by the graveness of her son's illness, had made: to dedicate him to the Krupa Monastery should he survive. He did survive and his mother's vow was fulfilled. He was tonsured with ordination by a bishop in 1769 at the age of 17.

The earliest recorded duke was a Friulian, Ursus I, around 750. His son John was duke between 772 and 776, during which period the Franks conquered the kingdom. John's son, Ursus II, was sent as a child to Nonantola, tonsured as a monk and in 789 gave all his earthly goods to the monastery his father had already well endowed. Several years later, he received a blessing to live as a hermit on the peninsula of the Valaam archipelago. Tsar Ivan the Terrible (1533–1584) developed a profound respect for Adrian, and endowed his monastic community. In August 1549, he asked Adrian to be the godfather for his daughter Anna.

Ljudevit Vuličević was born out of wedlock on 30 September 1839 in Cavtat, at the time part of the Habsburg Empire. He was baptized Petar Jeronim but he became well known through his monastic name Ljudevit or Lodovico in Italian. He was raised by his Serbian Catholic mother Jelena Vuličević, whose name he later embraced. In 1854 he entered the Franciscan Order and completed his high school education in 1856 before taking orders in Pankrac, at the Venetian Monastery where he was ceremonially tonsured.

The various profession rites are normally performed by the Abbot, but if the abbot has not been ordained a priest, or if the monastic community is a convent, a hieromonk will perform the service. The abbot or hieromonk who performs a tonsure must be of at least the rank he is tonsuring into. In other words, only a hieromonk who has been tonsured into the Great Schema may himself tonsure a Schemamonk. A bishop, however, may tonsure into any rank, regardless of his own.

The first hegumen, Afanasy the Elder, was a disciple of St. Sergius of Radonezh, whose successor, St. Nikon of Radonezh, is believed to have been tonsured a monk in this monastery. After the Russo–Crimean War (1571), which saw the monastery reduced to ashes, it was restored on a grander scale. The five-domed Cathedral of the Conception dates from that building campaign, financed by Ivan the Terrible. Born in 1912 in Orekhovo in a family of an Orthdox Jewish rabbi. In 1929 Kugel graduated from high school in Yaroslavl, and returned to her parents in Kostroma, where she later met with Dominican sisters Stephanie Gorodets and Margarita Krylevskoy. In 1931 Theresa Kugel was baptized in the Catholic Church and in 1932 moved to Krasnodar, where she was tonsured a nun with the name Teresa. On 6 October 1933 in Krasnodar she was arrested and taken to Moscow, where she was placed in Butyrskaya prison.

In April 1204, Constantinople fell to the soldiers of the Fourth Crusade, and like many Byzantine leaders, Theodore fled the city and sought refuge in Asia Minor. There Theodore was tonsured as a monk. In 1209, the newly proclaimed Nicaean emperor, Theodore I Laskaris, named him to the post of chartophylax of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, re-established in Nicaean exile. Laskaris also awarded him with the title hypatos ton philosophon, a prestigious title given to the head of the faculty of philosophy in Constantinople.

On 15 August 747, Carloman renounced his position as majordomo and withdrew to a monastic life, being tonsured in Rome by Pope Zachary. The monastery was founded by the holy princess Euphrosyne of Polotsk in 1125, when she settled near the Transfiguration church in Selce. Over time, the sisters of St. Euphrosyne were tonsured: the native Evdokia (in the world of Gordislav) and the cousin Evpraksia (in the world of Zvenislav) - the only daughter of the Polotsk prince Boris Vseslavich. Carloman (848 – c. 877) was the youngest son of Charles the Bald, king of West Francia, and his first wife, Ermentrude. He was intended for an ecclesiastical career from an early age, but in 870 rebelled against his father and tried to claim a part of the kingdom as an inheritance. Born in 848, Carloman was tonsured as a child in 854 in furtherance of his father's policy of preventing a partition of the kingdom (as had happened at Verdun in 843) by placing his younger sons in the church.

While Moscow's Western Rite mission withered and ended, Bishop Jean's church continued to thrive, however, without canonical protection after St. John's repose. Bishop Jean reposed in 1966, but in 1972, the church found a new canonical superior in the Church of Romania. Gilles Bertrand-Hardy was then tonsured as a monk with the name Germain and consecrated as Bishop of Saint- Denis. The first step of entering the monastery is a five-to-six month postulancy where the candidate follows the prayer and work schedule of the community. Guangxiao Temple () is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Guangzhou, the capital of China's Guangdong Province. As the special geographical position, Guangxiao Temple often acted as a stopover point for Asian missionary monks in the past. It also played a central role in propagating various elements of Buddhism, including precepts school, Chan (Zen), Shingon Buddhism, and Pure Land. In this temple, Huineng, the sixth Chinese patriarch of Chan Buddhism, made his first public Chan lecture and was tonsured, and Amoghavajra, a Shingon Buddhist master, gave his first teaching of esoteric Buddhism.

In Greece, Ephraim entered the monastic community when he was tonsured a monk at the Monastery of St. Paul on Mount Athos on October 16, 1983. At his tonsure, he received his name "Ephraim", in honor of Ephraim the Syrian, from the Elder Parthanios under whose spiritual direction Ephraim remained for several years. After Ephraim returned to Lebanon, he established his own monastery in Nahr Baskinta, near Biq'aata, within the jurisdiction of Metropolitan George (Khodr) of Mount Lebanon. Upon departing, Archbishop Michael gave Netsvetov two antimensia, one for use in the new church that Netsvetov planned to build on Atka, and the other for use in Netsvetov's missionary travels. After a molieben, Netsvetov and his party set off for Alaska on May 1, 1828. The travelers included Netsvetov, Anna his wife, and his father Yegor who had been tonsured reader for the new Atka Church.

Gabriel was born as Goderdzi Urgebadze in Tbilisi in the family of a Communist Party functionary, who was murdered in 1931. After a compulsory service in the Soviet army, he decided to join the monastic life and was tonsured a monk under the name of Gabriel in 1955. He made himself famous by setting fire to a banner depicting Vladimir Lenin during an International Workers' Day parade in downtown Tbilisi in 1965. Born in 1967, Valeriu completed secondary school in 1985 and entered the Soviet Army, serving from 1986 until 1988. Following his discharge from 1988 until 1992 Valeriu studied at the Odessa Theological Seminary in Odessa, Ukraine. In 1992 Valeriu was tonsured a monk with the name Peter, and later on in 1992 Metropolitan Vladimir (Cantarean) of Chisinau ordained him first a deacon (in July) and then a priest (in August). Around 781, Pepin's half brother Carloman was rechristened as "Pepin of Italy"—a step that may have signaled Charlemagne's decision to disinherit the elder Pepin, for a variety of possible reasons. The abbot increases the Stavrophore monk’s prayer rule, allows a more strict personal ascetic practice, and gives the monk more responsibility. Great Schema (Greek: Megaloschemos, Church Slavonic: Skhimnik)—Monks whose abbot feels they have reached a high level of spiritual excellence reach the final stage, called the Great Schema. The tonsure of a Schemamonk follows the same format as the Stavrophore, and he makes the same vows and is tonsured in the same manner.

It is possible, however, that in later life he emigrated to Hungary, as a tombstone of a certain "Prince Presian" has been found, in what is now Slovakia, giving his date of death as 1060/61.

He founded three monasteries on the Princes' Islands, a favourite place for exiling tonsured members of the imperial house. Empress Theodora appointed Ignatios, a staunch opponent of Iconoclasm, to succeed Methodios I as patriarch of Constantinople in 847. Arsaber was a noble of Armenian origin, holding the rank of patrikios, and served as quaestor of Emperor Nikephoros I Logothetes (r. 802–811). In February 808, a group of secular and ecclesiastic officials, who were dissatisfied with Nikephoros's rule, formed a conspiracy and acclaimed Arsaber as emperor.... Nikephoros, however, discovered the plot and arrested the participants, who were beaten, had their properties confiscated, and were ultimately exiled. Arsaber himself was tonsured and exiled to a monastery in Bithynia. Arsaber's daughter, Theodosia, had been married to the future Emperor Leo V the Armenian (r. 813–820).

Hugh or Hugo (802–844) was the illegitimate son of Charlemagne and his concubine Regina, with whom he had one other son: Bishop Drogo of Metz (801–855). Along with Drogo and his illegitimate half-brother Theodoric, Hugh was tonsured and sent from the palace of Aachen to a monastery in 818 by his father's successor, Louis the Pious, following the revolt of King Bernard of Italy. Hugh rose to become abbot of several abbacies: Saint-Quentin (822/23), Lobbes (836), and Saint-Bertin (836). In 834, he was made imperial archchancellor by his half-brother.

Hugh managed to flee the castle by sliding down a rope and rejoining his army, but Marozia was imprisoned until her death a few years later. Hugh's power in Italy was damaged but not destroyed by these events. On October 6 of same year took the monastic vows and was tonsured by the name of Kiprian by Archbishop Irenaeus (Bekish) of Boston and New England The Sobor of Bishops elected him Bishop of Washington, D.C. and suffragan to the Metropolitan with residence in St. Tikhon's Monastery, South Canaan, Pennsylvania. Bishop Kiprian is also Rector of St. Tikhon's Seminary in South Canaan. Subsequently, in 1964 Bp. Kiprian was elected Bishop of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. In 1970, Bp. Kiprian was elevated to Archbishop and served as a member of the Lesser Synod of Bishops and as chairman of the Department of External Affairs.

The final moment of Grimoald's life is an area that is disputed in both date and event, titled: 'Grimoald's coup'. It involves Grimoald and his son Childebert the Adopted taking the Austrasian throne from the true Merovingian King Dagobert II, son of the late Sigibert who died young at 26 years old. Historians like Pierre Riché are certain that Sigibert died in 656, having adopted Childebert due to his lack of an adult male heir. Following this, young Dagobert II was then exiled and tonsured by Grimoald and Dido of Poitiers, who then installed Childebert as King of Austrasia.

When Patriarch Niketas of Constantinople died in 780, Leo IV appointed Paul of Cyprus, who had iconophile sympathies, as his successor, although he did force him to swear oaths that he would uphold the official iconoclasm. During Lent of 780, however, Leo IV's policies on iconophiles became much harsher. He ordered for a number of prominent courtiers to be arrested, scourged, tonsured, and tortured after they were caught venerating icons. According to the 11th century historian George Kedrenos, who wrote many centuries after Irene's death, this crackdown on iconophiles began after Leo IV discovered two icons hidden underneath Irene's pillow.

St. George Orthodox Monastery in Wadi Qelt Tsibouktzakis was born in Evosmos near Saloniki, Greece, and after finishing primary school, went to work in a fabric-dying factory. According to his former boss at the dye-works, he became religious, gave all of his possessions away – even his bicycle, and left Salonika to enter a religious order. Tsibouktzakis studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He went to Israel in 1990, was tonsured as a monk in 1993, and was sent to St. George's Monastery in 1994, where he resided for the rest of his life.

On the advice of elder Nicodemus of Karoulia, he then moved to an English-speaking cell within Koutloumousiou monastery with four other ROCOR monks, which was one that other monasteries would often send American visitors to. He became acquainted with St. Paisios the Athonite while there. He was tonsured to the great schema by hieromonk Chrysostomos of Koutloumousiou and given the name George in honor of Saint George the Great-Martyr. In February, 1986 he returned to Holy Trinity Monastery and started working on the Print Shop of Saint Job of Pochaev in 1986, where he worked until 1998.

In 1944, Hierodeacon Bartolomeu began studying Medicine and at the Cluj Conservatory, but he was expelled after organizing a student strike against the new communist government of Petru Groza.

Base silver styca of Aethelred I -- second reign (789-796) Æthelred lived in exile during the reign of Ælfwald and his successor Osred II. However, in 788 or 789, Osred was deposed, forcibly tonsured and exiled and Æthelred was restored to the throne. In 790, during Æthelred's second reign, the ealdorman Eardwulf was ordered to be killed by Æthelred but survived and later became king. Ælfwald's sons Ælf and Ælfwine were killed, probably on Æthelred's orders, in 791. The next year Osred attempted to regain the throne, but was defeated, captured and killed on 14 September 792.

In 1981 Hieromonk Nicolae graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary and was appointed to serve at the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Chernivtsi the same year. From 1983 Fr. Nicolae also served as secretary of the administration of the Eparchy of Chernivtsi and Bukovina. On November 29, 1987, Fr. Nicolae was tonsured a monk with the name of Vladimir, and in 1988 was elevated to the rank of archimandrite. In 1989 Archimandrite Vladimir graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy, and on July 21, 1989, was consecrated Bishop of Chişinău and Moldova at Holy Theophany Cathedral in Moscow.

Sisters received this cross at their tonsure into the sisterhood, giving a vow to devote this specific period of their lives to God and neighbor, and to abide by the rules of the community. All sisters were given a prayer rope upon entering the community with the obligation to recite the Jesus Prayer 100 times daily. Postulants did not wear the prayer rope externally, but those tonsured wore the prayer rope they received a second time at their tonsure on their left hand. Postulants wore a long white kerchief on their heads, which covered their foreheads completely.

He taught in Kazan Theological Seminary from 1799 and was anointed a monk in 1800 with the name of Iakinf or Hyacinth and tonsured, sent to promote Christianity in Beijing, where he spent the next 14 years.

Theophylact Rhangabe or Theophylaktos Rhangabe (, ), was a Byzantine admiral, and the father of the emperor Michael I Rhangabe (ruled 811–813). He is known only from his participation, along with several other high-ranking officials, in a failed conspiracy in 780 to wrest the throne from Empress-regent Irene and to raise in her stead Nikephoros, the eldest surviving son of Constantine V (r. 741–775). At the time, he held the post of droungarios (admiral) of the Dodekanesos (roughly the southern Aegean Sea). After the plot was discovered, Irene had the conspirators publicly whipped, tonsured and banished.

Konstantios only had to contend with Nikephoros III, as Nikephoros Bryennios had been defeated by Nikephoros III at the Battle of Kalavrye, and subsequently blinded by him. Konstantios rapidly lost support, as it became clear he had no skill as a ruler. In the same year, his own supporters handed him over to Nikephoros III, who sent him to be tonsured and live in a monastery on one of the Princes Islands in the Propontis, as a monk. By becoming a monk he became unable to marry, and thus his engagement to Anna Vsevolodovna of Kiev was cancelled.

This degree is also known as the Little Schema, and is considered to be a "betrothal" to the Great Schema. At this stage, the monk makes formal vows of stability, chastity, obedience and poverty. Hieromonk Jonah returned to his home state of California and was initially assigned as the priest of a mission parish, St Mary Magdalene of Merced, California. While serving there, he worked with Father Jon Magoulias of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOA) parish in Modesto, California to establish a mission parish under the auspices of the OCA in the Sonora/Jamestown/Columbia area of California.

At some point in 602, suspicions fell upon him of plotting against Emperor Maurice, since a prophecy stated that the name of Maurice's successor would begin with a Φ (Phi). Indeed, soon after, Maurice was deposed and killed by a revolt in the Balkan army led by Phocas. As a close associate of Maurice, Philippicus was tonsured and forced to enter a monastery in Chrysopolis.. He was still at the monastery when Heraclius overthrew Phocas in 610. The new emperor recalled him and sent him to negotiate with Phocas's brother, Comentiolus, who commanded the eastern army.

She was born in 1893 in Kiev with the name Vera Gorodets into an ethnically mixed family, her father being a Jewish convert to Christianity and was of Orthodox religion by birth. She lived in Moscow and gave private lessons. On 10 March 1924 she was arrested and placed in Butyrskaya prison. After the adoption of Catholicism around 1921, Gorodets came into Abrikosov community and was tonsured a Dominican nun named Stephanie. While in exile Gorodets lived in a village near Tobolsk and was released on 9 May 1927 with the prohibition of residence in 6 major cities and border areas.

Born on 1 February 1969 in Tbilisi, the capital of then-Soviet Georgia, Murjiri was trained as a cellist at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, which he graduated from in 1991. He received his theological education at the Batumi Theological Seminary in Georgia and further, in Russia, at the Moscow Theological Academy and Saint Tikhon's Orthodox University, from which he received a Doctor of Divinity degree in 2015. Elizbar Mujiri was tonsured a monk under the name of Shio in 1993. He was ordained a deacon in 1995 and a priest of the Georgian Orthodox Church in 1996.

A contemporary of Stephen the Great (1457-1504) Daniil Sihastrul was born near the beginning of the 15th century in a village near, Rădăuți, with the baptismal name Dumitru. At 16 he was tonsured a monk with the name of David at Bogdana monastery in Rădăuți. Some time later, he retreated to the "Sfântul Laurențiu" near the village of Vicovu de Sus. Feeling the need for greater solitude, he took upon himself the Great Schema, taking the schematic name of Daniil, and retreating into a densely forested area of the Vițău valley near modern-day Putna.

Teaching at Paris, in a late 14th-century Grandes Chroniques de France: the tonsured students sit on the floor. Beyond the fact that clerical celibacy functioned as a spiritual discipline, it also was guarantor of the independence of the Church and of its essential dimension as a spiritual institution ordered toward ends beyond the competence and authority of temporal rulers. During the decline of the Roman Empire, Roman authority in western Europe completely collapsed. However, the city of Rome, under the guidance of the Catholic Church, still remained a centre of learning and did much to preserve classical Roman culture in Western Europe.

The Great Schema worn by Orthodox monks and nuns of the most advanced degree Great Schema (, megaloschemos; Church Slavonic: Схима, Schima)—Monks whose abbots feel they have reached a high level of spiritual excellence reach the final stage, called the Great Schema. The tonsure of a Schemamonk or Schemanun follows the same format as the Stavrophore, and he makes the same vows and is tonsured in the same manner. But in addition to all the garments worn by the Stavrophore, he is given the analavos (Church Slavonic: analav), which is the article of monastic vesture emblematic of the Great Schema. The analavos itself is sometimes called the "Great Schema".

Andreas Tillyrides was born in 1945 in Limassol, Cyprus. He studied from 1968 to 1972 at the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute, while studying in the Collège de France and the École Pratique des Hautes Études, afterwards pursuing post-graduation in Church History at Oxford University under Kallistos Ware, receiving a PhD in 1976. In the following year, under Archbishop Makarios III's orientation, Andreas went to Nairobi to organise an Orthodox seminary. In 1992, he was tonsured a monk under the name Makarios and subsequently ordained a priest and consecrated first and last Bishop of Riruta by then Metropolitan Peter of Axum and Bishop Theodore of Uganda.

The next rank, Stavrophore, is the grade that most Russian monks remain all their lives. The title Stavrophore means "cross-bearer" because when Tonsured into this grade the monastic is given a cross to wear at all times. This cross is called a Paramand—a wooden cross attached by ribbons to a square cloth embroidered with the Instruments of the Passion and the words, "I bear upon my body the marks of the Lord Jesus" (). The Paramand is so-called because it is worn under the Mantle (Greek: Mandyas; Church Slavonic: Mantya), which is a long cape which completely covers the monk from neck to foot.

They took the elderly empress from retirement in a monastery, brought her by warship to the Great Palace, and crowned her emperor a few hours before Constantine died "cursing his fate" on January 11. Nikephoros was arrested in Thessalonica and exiled to the Thracesian Theme, where he was tonsured and banished to the monastery of Kouzenas in Magnesia. Nikephoros Proteuon is commonly identified by modern scholars such as Jean- Claude Cheynet with the "Nikephoros, the son of Proteuon", who appears in chapter 119 of the hagiography of Saint Lazaros of Mount Galesios. According to the hagiography, he was serving as judge (krites) of the Thracesian Theme when he encountered the saint.

On March 5, 1979 Metropolitan Juvenal tonsured him with the name of Joseph after the righteous Patriarch Joseph in the Church of the Holy Prince Daniel of Moscow in Novodevichy Convent. On March 9 that year, Metropolitan Juvenal ordained monk Joseph as a deacon and on July 26, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Pimen assigned deacon Joseph to a full-time service position at the Church of the Assumption in Novodevichy Convent. On April 23, 1981, on Holy Thursday, monk Joseph was ordained to the priesthood by Metropolitan Juvenal. In 1982, on the feast of the Annunciation, he was awarded a pectoral cross.

He was tonsured and received the minor orders of porter and acolyte. However, in 1952, because of a serious medical condition (diagnosed as petit mal epilepsy), he took some time off from seminary studies to teach in DeAndreis High School in north St. Louis. After teaching for a year, he took his supposed epileptic condition as a sign from God that he should pursue another vocation. (Although he had been told that he had petit mal epilepsy, and took medication and suffered seizures at times, he discovered in the late 1970s that the problem was not epilepsy, but was psychological in nature, and he experienced no seizures after 1977).

Despite the Emperor's ambitions for him, Gregory, then barely twenty years old, withdrew to Mount Athos in the year 1316 and became a novice there in the Vatopedi monastery under the guidance of the monastic Elder St Nicodemos of Vatopedi. Eventually, he was tonsured a monk, and continued his life of asceticism. After the demise of the Elder Nicodemus, Gregory spent eight years of spiritual struggle under the guidance of a new Elder, Nicephorus. After this last Elder's repose, Gregory transferred to the Great Lavra of St. Athanasius the Athonite on Mount Athos, where he served the brethren in the trapeza (refectory) and in church as a cantor.

After receiving his Master of Divinity degree from St. Tikhon's in 1993, Mollard was appointed as an instructor in Old Testament Studies there. He continues to serve as senior lecturer in Old Testament, teaching master's-level courses in the prophets, the Psalms, and Wisdom Literature. He is also an instructor in the seminary's extension studies program, offering courses in the lives of the Old Testament saints, the liturgical use of the Old Testament, and the Old Testament in patristic literature. In 1995 Mollard was tonsured to the lesser schema by Archbishop Herman (Swaiko) and given the name Tikhon in honor of St. Tikhon of Moscow.

In late 1937, Yrjö joined the Valaam Monastery on Lake Lodoga, which at the time was within the borders of Finland. In 1938 at the age of twenty three, Yrjö was tonsured a monk with the name Paavali (Finnish form of Paul) and entered Holy Orders. Paavali taught at the monastery school and directed a choir of Finnish speaking novices. During the period of hostilities between Finland and the Soviet Union, lasting from the Winter War of 1939/1940 and its continuation through World War II, Fr. Paavali was initially called to service as a military chaplain and took part in the evacuation of Valaam monastery.

After years of ministry, Liausu became sick and discouraged; he departed on 15 July 1855, for France without authorization from the Church. The mission was left in the hands of Father Laval while Father Armand Chausson and Sister Thérèse were left in charge of Rouru Convent. He died on 29 May 1856 after returning to his home in Cahors. In 1864, Bishop Tepano Jaussen returned Liausu's remains to Mangareva for burial at the convent he founded, but during the exhumation when the casket was opened, the Rouru sisters found the remains of an old woman with tufts of hair on the top of her head instead of the tonsured priest.

Next, Irene demanded of the army an oath of loyalty, whose wording placed her before her son in precedence. This demand provoked a mutiny by the soldiers of the Armeniac Theme, which then spread throughout the Anatolian armies, which assembled in Bithynia and demanded Emperor Constantine's release. Bowing to their pressure, Irene capitulated and Constantine was installed as sole ruler in December 790. Among Constantine's first acts was to have Staurakios flogged, tonsured, and exiled to the Armeniac Theme, while all other eunuch officials were likewise exiled.. Irene remained confined in a palace at the Harbour of Eleutherios in the capital and retained her formal title as empress.

Michael and his family sought refuge in the Church of the Virgin of the Pharos, where they were tonsured as monks and nuns. Michael and his sons were castrated to make them incapable of claiming the throne in the future, and exiled to Plate, one of the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara (though the later historians John Skylitzes and Zonaras mention the island of Prote instead). Leo accorded them an annual stipend. According to Theophanes Continuatus, Theophylact, who adopted the monastic name Eustratius (Εὐστράτιος), died five years after his father, on 15 January 849, and was buried alongside him in a church on Plate Island.

When, in 1205, his father-in-law who had been tonsured as a monk threw off the monk's habit and reinstated himself in Kiev, the Olgovichi marched to Kiev, met Rurik Rostislavich, and made a pact to attack Halych. His father-in-law paid them for their support by giving Belgorod to Gleb's brother, Vsevolod; Vsevolod Svyatoslavich, in turn, handed it over to Gleb. In 1206, his brother Vsevolod Svyatoslavich seized Kiev, and Gleb occupied Chernigov. At the beginning of 1207, his brother (who had been expelled from Kiev by Rurik Rostislavich) marched against the town, and his attacking force constituted only his brother Gleb and Mstislav with their sons.

On the Eastern Orthodox feast day of Pentecost in 1997, Golovkov was elevated to the rank of Hegumen, or leader of a major monastery, by Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Jerusalem.

Baltakis was born into a family of Lithuanian farmers as the second of eleven children and named as Antanas. He studied in gymnasiums in Kretinga and Anykščiai until he was arrested by Nazi agents in 1944 and sent to forced labour. After the liberation from the forced labour camp at the end of World War II, he began to study at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1945 and a year later joined the mendicant Franciscan Order, where he was tonsured with the name "Paulius" and made his solemn profession of vows on 15 September 1950. Baltakis was ordained as a priest on 24 August 1952, after completing his theological studies.

The tonsured Caesar retained some influence on political events. With the collapse of imperial authority late in Michael VII’s reign, he advised his nephew to abdicate and become a monk when Nikephoros III Botaneiates threatened Constantinople in 1078, and in 1081 he fled Constantinople to join Alexios Komnenos and to persuade him to revolt against Botaneiates and claim the throne. It was also John Doukas, who arranged for the marriage of his granddaughter Irene Doukaina to Alexios Komnenos over the objections of the latter's mother Anna Dalassene. In this change of circumstance, he abandoned the monastic habit and Alexios allowed him to resume his old position as Caesar.

A Dalit found burning holika for Holika Dahan ceremony, was tonsured and paraded naked in the villages. In some parts of India, there have been allegations that Dalit grooms riding horses for wedding ceremonies have been beaten up and ostracised by upper caste people. In August 2015, upper caste people burned houses and vehicles belonging to Dalit families and slaughtered their livestock in reaction to Dalits daring to hold a temple car procession at a village in Tamil Nadu. In August 2015, it was claimed that a Jat Khap Panchayat ordered the rape of two Dalit sisters because their brother eloped with a married Jat girl of the same village.

Brought to Constantinople, Xiphias was tonsured and banished to Antigone, one of the Princes Islands. Following his return to the capital after his Georgian expedition, Basil II had most of his co-conspirators imprisoned and their estates confiscated. The patrikios Pherses the Iberian was executed, while two imperial chamberlains were also killed: one by Basil's own hand, and the other, who had tried to poison the Emperor, was thrown to the beasts. According to the contemporary historian Yahya of Antioch, the conspirators of 1022 were released by Constantine VIII after Basil's death in 1025, but Xiphias remained in exile until 1028, when the new emperor, Romanos III, released him.

His pastoral ministry began in Church of Greece in 1983 when Meletios (Kalamaras), Metropolitan Bishop of Nikopolis and Preveza tonsured Katerelos a monk in Preveza, Greece, and shortly thereafter ordained him to the diaconate. He later served the Holy Metropolis of Thebes and Livadeia. Katerelos also served a number of parishes in the Metropolis of Germany, where he was instrumental in the construction of Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Stuttgart. The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected him to bishop of Abydos on February 7, 2008, and elevated him to the episcopacy on February 23, 2008 at the Patriarchal Church of St. George in the Phanar (Istanbul, Turkey).

It was not supposed to be less than the size of a communicant's host, even for a tonsuratus, someone simply tonsured, and the approximate size for a priest's tonsure was the size of a priest's host. Countries that were not Catholic had exceptions to this rule, especially in the English-speaking world. In England and America, for example, the bare spot was dispensed with, likely because of the persecutions that could arise from being a part of the Catholic clergy, but the ceremonious cutting of the hair in the first clerical tonsure was always required. In accordance with Pope Paul VI's motu proprio Ministeria quaedam of 15 August 1972, "first tonsure is no longer conferred".

Neophytos was born in the mountain village of Kato Drys near Pano Lefkara, Cyprus, to farming parents Athanasios and Eudoxia,Eudoxia was her assumed name as a nun in her later life. In 825, just as he was about to be married, he was secretly tonsured by the stylite monk Eustratios, and adopted the monastic name Antony. Joined by his servant Theodore, he spent some time at Amorion, before moving on to Pylae and Nicaea, and thence to the Agauron or Pandemos Monastery on the Bithynian Olympus. His hagiography claims that during these journeys he was repeatedly rescued from need in miraculous manner. In 829 or 830 he was tried on the orders of Emperor Theophilos by the epi ton deeseon Stephen for his persecution of Thomas the Slav's adherents after the end of his rebellion, and was imprisoned for five months at Constantinople.

The Seven Boyars () were a group of Russian nobles who deposed Tsar Vasily Shuisky on 17 July 1610 and, later that year, invited the Poles into Moscow. The seven were Princes Fedor Mstislavsky (the leader of the group), Ivan Mikhailovich Vorotynskii, Andrei Vasilevich Trubetskoi, Andrei Vasilevich Golitsyn, Boris Mikhailovich Lykov-Obolenskii, and Boyars Ivan Nikitich Romanov and Fedor Ivanovich Sheremetev. Due to the Polish advance into Russia, the Bolotnikov rebellion, and other unrest during the Time of Troubles, Shuisky was never very popular, nor was he able to effectively rule outside of the capital, itself. The seven deposed him and he was forcibly tonsured a monk in the Chudov Monastery in the Kremlin.

In 1957, Anatolii was sent by Archbishop Nestor to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius. In 1958 he was tonsured by into monasticism, receiving the name Valentin, by archimandrite Seraphim (Smykov), who had been ordained to the priesthood by Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky). In 1960, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Anthony (Romanovky) of Stavropol and Baku, who had Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow among his consecrators to the episcopacy. Hieromonk Valentine served throughout the Stavropol and Vladimir dioceses, becoming the rector of the Orthodox Cathedral in Makhachkala (a predominant Muslim area), where he revived Orthodox Christianity, saving the Cathedral from closure. In 1970, he graduated from the historical faculty of Dagestan University.

On April 19, 2011 in the cathedral church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit of the stauropegial Conception Convent in Moscow, he was elevated to the rank of archpriest by the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. On 4 October 2012, the Holy Synod appointed him representative of the World Russian People's Council at the UN and assigned him to St Nicholas Cathedral in New York City. On 11 March 2014, with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus', the Superior of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Archbishop Theognost (Guzikov) of Sergiev Posad, tonsured him a monk with the name John in honour of St. John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco.

Theophanes at a conference of Eastern Orthodox bishops in Astrakhan in 2015 On August 14, 1997, Alexei was tonsured a monk by Bishop Jonathan (Tsvetkov) of Yuzhno- Sakhalinsk and the Kuril Islands with the name Theophanes in honor of St. Theophanes the Confessor, Bishop of Nicea. On August 17, 1997, Theophanes, who was a monk, was ordained a hierodeacon by Bishop Jonathan; Bishop Jonathan thereafter ordained him a hieromonk on August 19. During 1997 and 1998, Fr. Theophanes was a priest at the Resurrection Cathedral in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, while serving as director of the cathedral choir and editor of the diocesan newspaper. In 1998, he went to Smolensk to study at the Smolensk Theological Seminary.

The Mayan god Chin, reported from the sixteenth century, is said to have introduced homoeroticism into the Mayan culture and subsequently became associated with same-sex love. His example inspired noble families to purchase young men as lovers for their sons, creating legal relationships akin to marriage. An important Mayan deity best known from the Classical period (200-900 AD), the so-called Tonsured Maize God, is often depicted in Maya art as an effeminate young man associated with art and dance, and is thought to have constituted a 'third gender'. Xochipilli ('Flower Prince') was the god of art, games, beauty, dance, flowers, maize, and song in Aztec mythology, and also the patron of homosexuals and homosexual prostitutes.

On September 22, 2009, Michael was elected as the bishop of OCA's newly reconstituted Diocese of New York and New Jersey. On October 24 of that year, he was tonsured a rassophore monk by Metr. Jonah at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Monastery in preparation for his consecration to the episcopacy. On December 15, 2009, by a decision of the Holy Synod, Michael was appointed administrator of the Diocese of New York and New Jersey, a position he assumed effective January 1, 2010, allowing him to begin assuming the everyday running of the diocese, pending his consecration, which took place on May 8, 2010, in Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Bardas justified his usurpation of the regency by introducing various internal reforms. Under the influence of both Bardas and Photios, Michael presided over the reconstruction of ruined cities and structures, the reopening of closed monasteries, and the reorganization of the imperial university at the Maganaura palace under Leo the Mathematician.Tougher, p. 69. Photios, originally a layman, had entered holy orders and was promoted to the position of patriarch on the dismissal of the troublesome Ignatios in 858.On 19 December 858 Photios was a layman, on the 20th he was tonsured and over the next four days was ordained lector, sub- deacon, deacon and priest; on 25 December he was consecrated Patriarch of Constantinople.

His suggestion was considered radical and indeed blasphemous (since the original Cyrillic in use by the Serbian Orthodox Church at the time had allegedly been created by Cyril and Methodius), so Mrkalj received so much offensive criticism from the church hierarchy that he decided to be tonsured as a monk to prove his orthodoxy in 1811, but was so disappointed with the monastic life that he left the order in 1813. In 1817 he retracted his alphabet reform proposal in a publication titled: A Palinode (or Defense of the Thick Yer). Thus was the kingdom transferred to the Goths as one of their three administrative regions: Gallaecia, Hispania and Gallia Narbonensis.Donini and Ford Audeca, captured, was tonsured and forced to take holy orders, then sent into exile in Beja, in Southern Lusitania.

Alexander Gribanovsky was born on August 6, 1873, in village Bratki in the Borisoglebsky Uyezd of Russia's Tambov Governorate (now Ternovsky District, Voronezh Oblast) to the Priest Aleksey Gribanovsky and Anna (née Karmazina). After completing the Tambov theological primary school and then the Tambov theological seminary, Alexander enrolled in the Moscow Theological Academy, then under the rectorship of Archimandrite Anthony (Khrapovitsky), the future Metropolitan of Kiev and founding First Hierarch of the ROCOR. After completing the Academy in April 1898, Alexander was tonsured a monk by Bishop Alexander of Tambov with the name Anastasius after St. Anastasius Sinaita. On April 23, 1898, he was ordained a hierodeacon, and shortly thereafter a hieromonk.

In the 9th and 10th centuries, the tomb of St Martin of Tours was considered one of the holiest sites in western Christendom. At age 19 Odo was tonsured as a canon of the Church of St. Martin in Tours, where he spent six years studying classic authors, the Fathers of the Church, poetry, and music. Odo would later say that the monks of the monastery of St. Martin of Tours had been spoiled by all the wealth and gifts brought by the pilgrims, and had abandoned the Rule they were required to follow. He would later tell his monks that the religious at Tours no longer attended nightly Lauds for fear of getting their fine shoes dirty.

In the year 1876, right after the death of his wife, Alexei Amvrosiev went to Mount Athos and enrolled in St. Agiou Panteleimonos monastery, and on March 11, 1880, he was tonsured with the name Aristoklij, in honour of the martyr Cyprian Aristokliâ Salaminskiy. Four Years later on December 2, 1884, year Aristoklij was ordained a Deacon, and on 12 December of the same year a hieromonk. From 1891 to 1894 he was sent back to Moscow to be the Abbot of the St. Panteleimon monastery, a daughter establishment of the one in Mount Athos. During this time began to publish books and the magazine "Душеполезный Собеседник", which tells about the life of Russian monks on Mount Athos.

The status of monks as apart from secular life (at least theoretically) also served a social function. Dethroned Visigothic kings were tonsured and sent to a monastery so that they could not claim the crown back. Monasteries became a place for second sons to live in celibacy so that the family inheritance went to the first son; in exchange the families donated to the monasteries. Few cities lacked both a St Giles house for lepers outside the walls and a Magdalene house for prostitutes and other women of notoriety within the walls, and some orders were favored by monarchs and rich families to keep and educate their maiden daughters before arranged marriage.

In one extreme example in a manuscript of the Bible moralisée, an illustration shows the rod of Aaron, which has turned into a serpent, turning on the Pharaoh's magicians (Exodus, 7:10-12); Moses and Aaron do not wear the hat but the Egyptian magicians do, signifying not that they are Jews, but that they are like Jews, i.e. on the wrong side of the dispute. In Belgrade, Michael became part of a tightly-knit group of Serbia elder's students through an archimandrite, St. Justin (Popović): hieromonks Amfilohije Radović, Atanasije (Jevtić), Artemije (Radosavljević) and Irinej (Bulović), now bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In 1975, Michael chose a monastic life and was tonsured a monk with the name Mark by Bishop Paul (Pavlov) of Stuttgart. He was ordained a deacon in the summer of 1975, and a hieromonk three days later by Bishop Paul. Hieromonk Mark was appointed Deputy Rector of the Russian church in Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1976, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite. On 30 November 1980 he was consecrated bishop, and was installed as the (ROCOR) Bishop of Munich and Southern Germany succeeding bishop Paul (Pavlov).

Brother Urbain de Florit de La Tour de Clamouze, one of these early missionaries, founded and headed the Re'e Seminary College (also known as the College of Anaotiki) on Aukena, one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in the South Pacific, where native Mangarevan boys were taught Latin and French as future clergymen. Tiripone was among these native boys educated at the Aukena College along with the young king Joseph Gregorio II. In 1869, Father Nicolas Blanc sent him to pursue clerical studies on the island of Tahiti. He was tonsured on 21 September 1869 and returned to the Gambiers to work with Father Laval. On 24 December 1873, he was ordained as a priest in Papeete by Bishop Tepano Jaussen, the Vicar Apostolic of Tahiti.

Petar Mandić was born in Upper Gračac to parents Nikola Mandić and Soka (née Budisavljević) Mandić, brother of Georgina Đuka (Mandić) Tesla and Toma Mandić. Petar Mandić was a Serbian Orthodox priest who was later in life when his wife died was tonsured as a monk in the Gomirje Monastery, where he adopted the monastic name of Nikolaj, served as head of the monastery brotherhood (archimandrite), and became the head of Eparchy of Dabar and Bosnia of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1896 as Vladika Nikolaj (Mandić). He served as Metropolitan of the Metropolitanate of Dabar-Bosna from 7 November 1896 to 2 August 1907. Nikola Tesla visited his uncle at the Monastery of Gomirje when his uncle was there.

As a result, in 1260 he was deposed and tonsured as a monk (with the name of Athanasios) at the Monastery of the Saviour at Selymbria by Joannicius, Metropolitan of Philadelphia. Patriarch Arsenios Autoreianos repeatedly tried to have him reinstated in 1261–65, but the Church synod always blocked him. Andronikos was finally restored to his see in 1283 by Michael VIII's son and successor Andronikos II Palaiologos (r. 1282–1328), who tried to tread a middle course between the Arsenite faction—the supporters of Arsenios Autoreianos, who refused to recognize Michael VIII's legitimacy after Arsenios had excommunicated him—and their opponents, who had remained loyal to Michael VIII and been willing to support his ultimately failed attempt to achieve Union with the Roman Catholic Church.

The Armeniacs once again refused to comply, and demanded the return of Mosele from Constantinople. Despite having guaranteed his personal safety, Constantine, who suspected him of designs on the throne, had him flogged, tonsured, and imprisoned... This was followed soon after by the disastrous defeat of the Byzantine army, led by the emperor himself, at the Battle of Marcellae against the Bulgars. As the imperial army grumbled and even the usually loyal tagmata plotted to replace him, Constantine, on the advice of his mother and her eunuch adviser Staurakios, had Mosele blinded. Constantine's uncle, Nikephoros, whom the tagmatic soldiers planned to make emperor, was also blinded, while four other uncles had their tongues cut.. At the news of this, the Armeniacs rose in open rebellion.

To the right and left are the archangels Michael and Gabriel holding banners and scrolls with the inscription PETICIVS and POSTVLATIVS. Bordering the central window of the lower zones are two six- winged seraphim, in their hands they hold live coals with tongs which they place in the mouths of two crouching figures. In the left lower zone, there are two tonsured (meaning scalp has been shaved) figures who might be Saints Benedict and Bernard or one of them might be a portrait of a local deacon on account of the realism in the face of the figure. The theory that these figures are patrons of the church is strengthened by the discovery of similar figures in related frescoes at the monastery of Saint Peter of Berga.

The Gothic sedilia in the chancel of Kilfenora Cathedral According to local tradition, the late 12th- to early 13-century chancel was roofed with an oak ceiling (blue with gold start) until the end of the 18th century. It is roofless today and features a 15th-century doorway, a 15th- century Gothic sedilia as well as a Romanesque three-light east window with its triangular pillars topped by carved capitals. On both sides of the window is a carved effigy: a bishop with his right hand raised in blessing (possibly early 14th century), to the north; and a tonsured, bareheaded cleric holding a book (possibly 13th century) to the south. The chancel also contains several tombs and the remains of high crosses.

Church of St. Demetrius on Blood in Uglich (17th century) - commemorates the murder of Tsarevich Demetrius The Coat of Arms of the city of Uglich, featuring Tsarevich Dmitri The death of the Tsarevich roused a violent riot in Uglich, instigated by the loud claims of Dmitry's mother Maria Nagaya and her brother Mikhail that Dmitry was murdered. Hearing this, enraged citizens lynched fifteen of Dmitry's supposed "assassins", including the local representative of the Moscow government (dyak) and one of Dmitry's playmates. The subsequent official investigation, led by Vasily Shuisky, after a thorough examination of witnesses, concluded the Tsarevich had died from a self-inflicted stab wound to the throat. Following the official investigation, Maria Nagaya was forcibly tonsured as a nun and exiled to a remote convent.

Gougane Barra Lived in Templemartin, near Bandon, and originally named Lóchán (modern form, Loan), he was the son of Amergin of Maigh Seóla, a skilled craftsman originally from Galway. He studied in Ossory, corresponding approximately to the present County Kilkenny. He was renamed "Fionnbharra" (Fairhead in Irish), reportedly when, on being tonsured, the presiding cleric remarked: "Is fionn barr (find barr, in the Irish of the time) Lócháin", meaning, "Fair is the crest of Loan"), and he then became known as "Findbarr" ("Fionnbarra" in modern Irish).P. According to Gerberding narrative, Grimoald and Dido organised around 16th January 651 Dagobert's exile to Ireland at Nivelles, then when Sigibert died a month later they acted out the plan and tonsured Dagobert, replacing him with Childebert, who ruled until 657. Clovis II then immediately acted and invaded Austrasia, executing Grimoald and his son. Then either in 657 or 662, the Neustrians (either Clovis II who died in 657 or his son Chlothar III) installed infant King Childeric II to the throne of Austrasia, marrying him to Bilichild, the daughter of Sigibert's widow Chimnechild of Burgundy. Grimoald and Childebert's deaths brought an end to the direct Pippinid line of the family, leaving the Arnulfing descendants from Begga and Ansegisel to continue the faction.

Kirby argues that the journey may indicate that Alfred was intended for the church, while Nelson on the contrary sees Æthelwulf's purpose as affirming his younger sons' throneworthiness, thus protecting them against being tonsured by their elder brothers, which would have rendered them ineligible for kingship. Æthelwulf set out for Rome in the spring of 855, accompanied by Alfred and a large retinue. The King left Wessex in the care of his oldest surviving son, Æthelbald, and the sub-kingdom of Kent to the rule of Æthelberht, and thereby confirmed that they were to succeed to the two kingdoms. On the way the party stayed with Charles the Bald in Francia, where there were the usual banquets and exchange of gifts.

On March 22, 1994, the Holy Synod raised him to become a bishop and he became the vicar of the Archdiocese of Bucharest, receiving the name of Snagoveanul ("of Snagov"), being ordinated on April 3, 1994 at the Saint Spyridon the New Church of Bucharest. On February 21, 2001, the Church Electoral College summoned by Patriarch Teoctist in Bucharest voted bishop Teodosie Petrescu to become the Archbishop of Tomis, being enthroned at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul of Constanța on April 8, 2001, the Palm Sunday. Teodosie became a Doctor of Theology in July 1999 and has been a professor since April 2002.

When the plot was discovered, Einhard writes that Pepin was tonsured and sent directly to the monastery of Prüm. In his paper "Pipinus Rex" historian Carl Hammer points out the disparate attention Einhard gives to Pepin's revolt, arguing, "he gives it priority over his account of the evidently more widespread and possibly more dangerous rebellion of 785/6." Hammer also points out that Einhard describes Pepin as a "hapless pawn of the real conspirators" and so hopes to maintain the cohesion of the family unit in his portrayal of Charlemagne and his offspring. Finally, Hammer points out that no historian we have record of prior to Einhard called Pepin "the Hunchback"—Presumably, this slander was another aspect of Einhard's attempt to spare the family.

Nikolaj Velimirović (Serbian Cyrillic: Николај Велимировић; – ) was bishop of the eparchies of Ohrid and Žiča (1920–1956) in the Serbian Orthodox Church. An influential theological writer and a highly gifted orator, he was often referred to as the new John Chrysostom and historian Slobodan G. Markovich calls him "one of the most influential bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the twentieth century" As a young man, he came close to dying of dysentery and decided that he would dedicate his life to God if he survived. He lived and was tonsured as a monk under the name Nikolaj in 1909. He was ordained into the clergy, and quickly became an important leader and spokesperson for the Serbian Orthodox Church, especially in its relations with the West.

There he was imprisoned, beaten and publicly paraded in the Mese along with the other conspirators, and later tonsured and forced to enter the Stoudios Monastery.. Theodora herself was placed in a convent, but she apparently continued to conspire with Diogenes, who planned to take advantage of Romanos's absence on campaign in the East in 1032 to escape to the Balkans. The plot was leaked to Romanos by Theophanes, metropolitan of Thessalonica, and the conspirators were arrested. Diogenes was brought to the Palace of Blachernae for interrogation by John the Orphanotrophos, but he committed suicide, throwing himself off a wall, rather than confess under torture and implicate his fellow conspirators.. Constantine's son Romanos Diogenes became a successful general and eventually rose to become emperor in 1068–71..

Régnier was born in Chartres, capital city of the current department of Eure-et-Loir, in Centre-Val de Loire region . His father, Jacques Régnier, was a bourgeois of good means and position; his mother, Simone Desportes, was the sister of the poet Philippe Desportes. Desportes, who was richly beneficed and in great favor at court, seems to have been regarded as Mathurin Régnier's natural protector and patron; and the boy himself, with a view to his following in his uncle's steps, was tonsured at eight years old. Little is known of his youth, and it is chiefly conjecture which fixes the date of his visit to Italy in a humble position in the suite of the cardinal, François de Joyeuse, in 1587.

There are conflicting claims about where Dagobert was buried. According to the Life of Bishop Audoin of Rouen, written in the early eighth century, Dagobert was buried in the church of Saint Peter in Rouen alongside his predecessor, Childeric II, and Childeric's queen, Bilichild, and infant son, also named Dagobert. This source refers to the "Dagobert whom Grimoald tonsured" without mentioning his exile, return or reign.

On July 17, 1993 by same bishop Monk Roman was ordained to the rank of hierodeacon. On May 6, 1994, on Bright Friday, by same bishop he was ordained to the rank of hieromonk. February 11, 2005 During the Small Entrance at the Liturgy, Metropolitan Laurus (Škurla) awarded Hieromonk Roman (Krassovsky) the right to wear the Golden Cross in recognition of his many labors, which include heading the Holy Trinity Seminary and Monastery choir and teaching church music in Seminary.

Koutsoumpas was tonsured with the name Kyprianos (Cyprian) in the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the island of Patmos. In 1961, the then hieromonk Kyprianos founded the Monastery of Sts. Cyprian and Justina in Fyli, Attica, becoming its first abbot. In 1968, on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, recognizing the error of the “Revised Julian Calendar” and the ecumenical excesses brought about after its adoption, the monastery unilaterally adopted the traditional (Patristic, or “old”) Julian calendar for services, while continuing to commemorate their diocesan bishop in the new calendar Official Church, Metropolitan Nikodemos. In his book, “How I Learned About the Patristic Calendar and How I Returned to It,” Fr. Kyprianos stated he initially hesitated to join the Greek Old Calendarists due to the sectarianism and extremism of some of its members.

Indo-Parthian King On their coins and in the art of Gandhara, Indo-Parthians are depicted with short crossover jackets and large baggy trousers, possibly supplemented by chap-like over-trousers.Described in "Rome's enemies, Parthians and Sassanid Persians", Their jackets are adorned with rows of decorative rings or medals. Their hair is usually bushy and contained with a headband, a practise largely adopted by the Parthians from the 1st century AD."Parthians, from about the 1st century AD, seem to have preferred to show off their carefully tonsured hair, usually only wearing a fillet of thick ribbon; before then, the Scythian cap or bashlyk was worn more frequently". Bricius (sometimes anglicized as Brice, died 1222) was prior of Lesmahagow and afterward bishop of Moray (Gaelic epscop Muireb; Latin episcopus Moraviensis). In this period, the name Bricius is more often a Latinization of the Gaelic names Máel Brigte ("tonsured devotee of St. Brigit") and Gilla Brigte ("devotee of St. Brigit") than a real name, although it is still possible that Bricius was indeed the bishop's real name. He is called Bricius Douglas by David Wilkins's Concilia magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae, and this is supported by two men who used this name, "Arkenbald and Henric" (Archibald and Henry), being called his brothers. Bricius appears to have been a son of William de Dufglas, and had five brothers, four of whom also became clerics, all in the Moray diocese.

Although Hartmoti (Hartmut) is referred to as preceptor, it really means abbot. Since he is cited as abbot it places the manuscript during his tenure of office 872-883. Portraits of the tonsured Folchardus, holding the Psalter and bowing towards the abbot (far left side of tympanum painting of King David receiving his harp) and Abbot Harmut prepared to receive the Psalter with open arms (far right side of tympanum painting of the Ark of the Covenant transported by an oxen drawn wagon) are each found on the extreme ends of the folio on either side of the centralized bust of Christ in the spandrel on the “Dedication Page” on folio 12. He is also probably the artist of the Lindau Gospels in the Morgan Library, New York.

Tikhon (Zaitsev) at a ceremony at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2012 After completing his military services, Zaitsev entered the Moscow Seminary, which he successfully completed in 1991. In the same year he was admitted to the Moscow Theological Academy, which he graduated in 1995, defending his inaugural dissertation on the dignity of the candidate of theology in the department "The Venerable Theodore Studites - teacher of the monastic order". After completing his studies at the Academy, Tikhon continued his work as a teacher in the Moscow seminary, where he taught liturgy, homiletics and Ancient Greek. On 25 March 1993 he was consecrated a priest by Patriarch Alexy II, and was shortly after tonsured a monastic monk by the Archimandrite Benedict (Knjasev), the first Prorector of the Moscow Spiritual Academy and the Seminary.

In the Early Middle Ages, a group of mosaic portraits in Rome of Popes who had commissioned the building or rebuilding of the churches containing them show standing figures holding models of the building, usually among a group of saints. Gradually these traditions worked their way down the social scale, especially in illuminated manuscripts, where they are often owner portraits, as the manuscripts were retained for use by the person commissioning them. For example, a chapel at Mals in South Tyrol has two fresco donor figures from before 881, one lay and the other of a tonsured cleric holding a model building.Dodwell, 46 In subsequent centuries bishops, abbots and other clergy were the donors most commonly shown, other than royalty, and they remained prominently represented in later periods.

Tonsured Maize God and Spotted Hero Twin Many versions of the legend of the Hero Twins Hunahpú and Xbalanqué circulated through the Mayan peoples, but the story that survives was preserved by the Dominican priest Francisco Ximénez who translated the document between 1700 and 1715. Maya deities in the Post-Classic codices differ from the earlier versions described in the Early Classic period. In Mayan mythology Hunahpú and Xbalanqué are the second pair of twins out of three, preceded by Hun-Hunahpú and his brother Vucub-Hunahpú, and precursors to the third pair of twins, Hun Batz and Hun Chuen. In the Popol Vuh, the first set of twins, Hun-Hunahpú and Vucub-Hanahpú were invited to the Mayan Underworld, Xibalba, to play a ballgame with the Xibalban lords.

Arsenije, surnamed Crnojević (Црнојевић) or Črnojević (Чрнојевић), spelled in Church Slavonic as "Арсенїй Чарноевичь" (sr. Чарнојевић/Čarnojević), claimed to be a descendant of the medieval Crnojević family, which had ruled the region of Zeta in the second half of the 15th century. He was born in Bajice, hamlet of Cetinje in the Old Montenegro, a mountainous region that was never fully conquered by the Ottoman Empire. As a young boy, Arsenije came to live in the Patriarchal Monastery of Peć, the seat of the Serbian Patriarchate of Peć, at the time led by Serbian Patriarch Maksim I. There, as he grew older, he was tonsured and ordained a deacon and then a priest, thanks to the good graces of his mentor Maksim whom Arsenije later described as "my father and teacher".

Durastante Tommaso Francesco Emiliano Natalucci (September 17, 1687 – May 22, 1772) was an Italian historian who specialized in history of Trevi, in Umbria. Born at Picicche di Trevi into one of the prominent families of the area, he was tonsured at age 7, upon the death of an uncle of his who had been priest of SS. Crocifisso: he received the benefice of that church from Pope Innocent XII. He studied with the Jesuits in nearby Spoleto from 1704 to 1709, when he moved to Rome to study law. His father had died in 1705, so when his mother fell ill around 1710, he returned to Trevi to take care of his family's affairs, in which task he succeeded well enough that he was entrusted similar work on behalf of other local families.

It was around 1768 that he met the teacher who would make him turn around his life completely, and of whom would be employed as secretary. Initiated as an Elus Coën, the tonsured cleric Fournié resides mainly in Bordeaux, where he mediates the correspondences between different members of the Order. In 1776, Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin is quoted as describing him as an Elus Cohen exceptionally favored in supernatural manifestations; the source is Fournié himself in his own work What we've been, what we are and what we become (1802), in fear of saying too much. At the time of the revolution Fournié emigrated to England, where he remained until his death, and in this period, from 1818 to 1821, he befriends the Theosophist of Munich Franz von Baader.

Louis 'mercifully' commuted their sentences to blinding, which would neutralize Bernard as a threat without actually killing him; however, the process of blinding (carried out by means of pressing a red- hot stiletto to the eyeballs) proved so traumatic that Bernard died in agony two days after the procedure was carried out. At the same time, Louis also had his half-brothers Drogo, Hugh and Theoderic tonsured and confined to monasteries, to prevent other Carolingian offshoots challenging the main line. Nothing is known of his origin or early life. He was apparently named paradynasteuon to Emperor Romanos I Lekapenos (reigned 920–944) sometime between 922 and 924, following the fall of his predecessor, John the Rhaiktor, against whom accusations were brought before the emperor, forcing him to abandon his office and be tonsured a monk. He first appears in this capacity during the negotiations with the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon in 924: he was part of an embassy, along with Patriarch Nicholas I of Constantinople and the patrikios Michael Stypeiotes, that the Bulgarian ruler sent back to Constantinople, demanding to negotiate with Romanos in person. solidus of Romanos I with Constantine VII John was raised to the high court rank of patrikios kai anthypatos on 19 April 924 or 925, which reportedly caused envy towards him by various courtiers.

Li Mao was the son of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and his favorite consort, Consort Wu. In 733, Li Mao married the beautiful Yang Yuhuan (楊玉環), daughter of Yang Xuanyan (楊玄琰) who was census official at Shu Prefecture (蜀州, in modern Chengdu, Sichuan). After his mother's death, Yang Yuhuan came into Xuanzong's favor and the emperor decided to take her as his consort. However, since Princess Yang was already the wife of his son, Emperor Xuanzong stealthily arranged for her to become a Taoist nun with the tonsured name Taizhen in order to prevent criticisms that would affect his plan of making her his concubine. Yang then stayed, for a brief while, as a Taoist nun in the palace itself, before Emperor Xuanzong made her an imperial consort after bestowing his son Li Mao a new wife.

Benjamin was born to a priestly family in the pogost (village) of Nimenskii in the Andreevskii volost of the Kargopolsky Uyezd near Arkhangelsk in the Olonets Governorate in the northwest of the Russian empire. He graduated from the Olonets Theological Seminary in 1893 and earned his candidate of theology degree from the St. Petersburg Spiritual Academy in 1897, defending a thesis on Archbishop Arcadius of Olonets' anti- heretical activities. In 1895 he was tonsured a monk and given the name Benjamin; later that year he was ordained a hierodeacon (deacon-monk) and the following year he was ordained a hieromonk (priest-monk). Following his graduation he taught sacred scripture at the Riga Theological Seminary (1897–1898) following which he was inspector of the Kholm Theological Seminary (1898–1899) and the St. Petersburg Spiritual Academy (1899–1902).

Gold solidus showing Irene alongside her son Constantine VI Leo IV died on 8 September 780 and Irene became regent for their nine-year-old son Constantine VI. Rumors were circulated claiming that Leo IV had died of a fever after putting on the jeweled crown that had been dedicated by either Maurice (ruled 582 – 602) or Heraclius (ruled 610 – 641). Irene herself may have promoted this rumor in an effort to smear her deceased husband's memory. In October, only six weeks after Leo IV's death, Irene was confronted with a conspiracy led by a group of prominent dignitaries that sought to raise Caesar Nikephoros, a half-brother of Leo IV, to the throne. Irene had Bardas (the former strategos of the Armeniac Theme), Gregory (the logothete of the dromos), and Konstantinos (the count of the excubitors) scourged, tonsured, and banished.

There he was ambushed by archers placed by the regents, and killed along with a number of his followers. Numerous supporters of the usurper—800 according to the Life of Euthymius, over 3,000 according to the Life of Basil the Younger—were harshly punished; some were blinded and exiled, while others—including those who had sought sanctuary in the Hagia Sophia—were tonsured and confined to monasteries, while many of the common folk were affixed to stakes on the eastern shore of the Bosporus. Constantine Doukas' wife was shorn and exiled to her husband's estate in Paphlagonia and his younger son Stephen was castrated. Along with the deaths of Constantine's son and nephew, this meant the extinction of this branch of the Doukas family: the relation of the later bearers of the Doukas name with Andronikos and Constantine is unclear.

On August 4, 2002 he was ordained to the priesthood at Mor Gabriel Monastery by Mor Timotheos Samuel Aktaş, the Archbishop of Tur 'Abdin. On April 15, 2007, Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East consecrated Augin Aydın a Metropolitan by the name Polycarpus in honor of St. Polycarp of Smyrna at the Cathedral of St. Peter & St. Paul in Ma'arrat Saydnaya, () near Damascus, Syria. He was then appointed the Metropolitan and Patriarchal Vicar for the Archdiocese of the Netherlands of the Syriac Orthodox Church, succeeding the late Mor Julius Yeshu Çiçek.

However, the king married Chimnechild of Burgundy and had a son of his own, the future king Dagobert II. Grimoald's son Childebert was proclaimed King of Austrasia in 656, but the reign was short-lived as he was deposed after seven months in 657 and both he and his father were killed in a revolt.

Ambrosius was born as Besarion Khelaia (ბესარიონ ხელაია) in Martvili, Georgia, then part of Imperial Russia. He graduated from the Tiflis Theological Seminary in 1885 and was ordained to the priesthood in Abkhazia where he served as a priest in Sukhumi, New Athos, and Lykhny, and also delivered courses in the Georgian language. Under the pseudonym of Amber, he published a series of articles denouncing the policy of Russification in Abkhazia and accusing local Russian officials of fomenting anti-Georgian sentiments among the Abkhaz people. Marine Khositashvili, წმიდა მღვდელმთავარი ამბროსი აღმსარებელი (ხელაია) (The Holy Archpriest Ambrosius the Confessor (Khelaia)) , „საპატრიარქოს In 1896, he enrolled into the Kazan Theological Academy, from which he graduated in 1900, having authored a thesis, “the Struggle of Christianity against Islam in Georgia.” Tonsured a Hieromonk in 1901, he returned in Georgia where he was made an archimandrite at the Chelishi Monastery in the province of Racha.

On becoming a tonsured monk, he adopted the name of an old Egyptian anchorite Bessarion, whose story he has related. In 1436 became abbot of a monastery in Constantinople and in 1437, he was made metropolitan of Nicaea by the Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaeologus, whom he accompanied to Italy in order to bring about a reunion between the Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Catholic) churches. The emperor hoped to use the possibility of re-uniting the churches to obtain help from Western Europe against the Ottoman Empire. Bessarion participated in the Byzantine delegation to the Council of Ferrara-Florence as the most eminent representative of unionists, although originally belonged to the party of anti-unionists. On 6 July 1439 he was the one who read the declaration of the Greek Association of Churches in the cathedral of Florence, in the presence of Pope Eugene IV and the Emperor John VIII Palaeologus.

In the Latin or Western Rite of the Catholic Church, "first tonsure" was, in medieval times, and generally through 1972, "motu proprio", Retrieved 2011-08-14 the rite of inducting someone into the clergy and qualifying him for the civil benefits once enjoyed by clerics. Tonsure was a prerequisite for receiving the minor and major orders. Failing to maintain tonsure was the equivalent of attempting to abandon one's clerical state, and in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, any cleric in minor orders (or simply tonsured) who did not resume the tonsure within a month after being warned by his Ordinary lost the clerical state. Over time, the appearance of tonsure varied, ending up for non-monastic clergy as generally consisting of a symbolic cutting of a few tufts of hair at first tonsure in the Sign of the Cross and in wearing a bare spot on the back of the head which varied according to the degree of orders.

His brother John, now deceased, served on the parish council of Saint George Church, Trumbull, Connecticut, his brother Billy gave his life serving in the armed forces during the Korean War, while his youngest brother, James, served as lay chairman of the Jamaica Estates parish and member of the Archdiocesan Council's Student Fund. His elder brother, Father Arthur, is Chancellor of the Boston-based Albanian Archdiocese. Archbishop Nikon pursued his elementary and secondary studies in New York City, where he developed an abiding interest in the theatre arts, securing leading roles in several high school productions, and in the biological sciences. Tonsured to the Order of Reader by Metropolitan Theophan (Noli), Archbishop Nikon studied at Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, Crestwood, New York; Iona and Concordia College, New Rochelle, New York; and the New School for Social Research and Political Science, New York City. In 1967, he married Sarah Arthur, his childhood sweetheart.

The order, or congregation, of Tiron was founded in about 1106 by the Benedictine Bernard de Ponthieu, also known as Bernard d'Abbeville (1046–1117), born in a small village near Abbeville, Ponthieu. Tonsured at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint- Cyprien in Poitiers around the year 1070, Bernard left the order in 1101 when his nomination as abbot of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe was disapproved by Cluny and Pope Paschal II. From then on Bernard lived first as a hermit on the island of Chausey, between Jersey and Saint-Malo, then in the woods of Craon, near Angers, with two other rigorist monks: Robert d'Arbrissel, future founder of the controversial Abbey of Fontevraud, and Vitalis de Mortain, later the founder of the Congregation of Savigny in 1113. Following the example of the Desert Fathers, all three men and their followers (men and women) lived detached from the world, in great poverty and strict penance.

Drogo sacramentary Forced out of the royal court when Louis the Pious became Emperor in 814, Drogo and Hugh were forcibly tonsured and "put under free custody into monasteries". Drogo became a cleric in 818 and abbot of Luxeuil in 820. In 822, as a deeply religious man, Louis performed penance (for causing the death of Bernard of Italy and other issues), at his palace of Attigny near Vouziers in the Ardennes, before Pope Paschal I, and a council of ecclesiastics and nobles of the realm that had been convened for the reconciliation of Louis with his three sons. Also in attendance were his three younger half-brothers, Drogo, whom he soon installed as Bishop of Metz in 823 (the previous bishop was Gondulphus of Metz, 819 to 822), Hugo, who he soon made Abbot of St-Quentin, and Theodoric. Drogo became less significant at court and as a court figure by 829 – he had no formal position and did not become a player again until the 830s.

In 1986 he entered the extramural department of the Moscow Theological Academy in Zagorsk. In 1987 by the decree of his eparchial bishop, Metropolitan Nykodym (Rusnak), Valeriy Kudriakov as a supporter of autocephalous status of the Ukrainian Church was banned from undertaking any church activity and performing any priestly function in public. In 1989 the eparchial bishop lifted the ban and Valeriy Kudriakov again was listed among the clergy of the Lviv and Ternopil diocese. In 1990 he joined the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. In 1993 he was tonsured with the name Methodius (after the Apostle Methodius, Slavonic teacher (869)). In 1995 he was appointed a chancellor of the Office of His Holiness Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine Volodymyr (1993–95). On June 17, 1995 Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine Volodymyr and Bishop of Donetsk and Lugansk Iziaslav (Cargo) ordained Mefodiy bishop of Khmelnitsky and Kamenetz-Podolsk. In the spring of 1945, Metropolitan Irineu asked the Ministry of Religion to set up another post of vicar bishop for the Metropolitanate of Moldavia. Once the request was granted, Metropolitan Irineu, as bishop of the place, proposed Fr. Ioan Marina for election to the post. At this point Marina was still at St. George's, a widower for almost a decade, and the metropolitan knew him well, having had him as a student and having encountered him while he was a bishop's assistant at Râmnic and then a metropolitan's assistant at Craiova. At Metropolitan Irineu's proposal, the Holy Synod, in its July 30, 1945 session, after a canonical investigation and examination, approved Fr. Marina's election to the second, newly founded post of vicar bishop, at the Iaşi Metropolitan Cathedral, and accorded him the rank of bishop, with the title "Vasluianul". On August 11, 1945, at Cetăţuia Monastery in Iaşi, the priest Ioan Marina was tonsured a monk, receiving the patronymic Justinian and being ordained an archimandrite as well.

Desiderius and his family were captured, tonsured, and sent to Frankish religious houses; the fate of Gerberga and her children by Carloman is unknown, although it is possible that they, too, were sent by Charlemagne to monasteries and nunneries.

On August 11, 1818 he was tonsured in the cathedral at Quebec City and from September 1818 commenced three years of study at the Séminaire de Nicolet, where he studied theology, and also taught first year classes in Latin elements and second year classes in syntax. On January 28, 1821, he was conferred minor orders by Joseph-Octave Plessis, Archbishop of Quebec, and on May 20 of that year at the parish church of Nicolet he was elevated to the position of subdeacon. On May 21, 1821, Bourget left Nicolet to assume the post of Secretary to Jean-Jacques Lartigue, vicar general of Montreal. On December 22, 1821 he was made a deacon at the bishop's residence in the Hôtel-Dieu. On November 30, 1822, Bourget was ordained to the priesthood by Lartigue and shortly thereafter was given supervision of the construction of Saint-Jacques Cathedral, the erection of which had only begun that year. The cathedral was completed on September 22, 1825 and consecrated by Archbishop Plessis, and Bourget was named chaplain. This role gave him responsibility for organising the pastoral ministry of St- Jacques and seeing to the conduct of public worship.

Louis- le-Grand was attended during those years by such famous-to-be people as La Fayette (a shade older than Tondu-Lebrun was), Maximilien Robespierre, Camille Desmoulins (both younger), and a bunch of others that played some role in the French Revolution as well (such as Feron, Noel...).
