The Beaver Tails were constructed in three distinct batches, corresponding to the introduction of the Hiawatha in 1934 and its first two reequippings in 1936 and 1938. In total eight cars were built, all in the Milwaukee Road's own shops. The first generation seated 24 in the rear area, plus separate men's and women's lounges. In the 1936 edition the lounges were replaced by "small toilet rooms"; there was lounge-style seating for 26 plus seating for 12 in the rear (dubbed the "solarium").

Each year on the Tuesday before Christmas Eve villagers gather on the village green to sing traditional carols accompanied by a local brass band. Chicago tenements inhabited in the late 19th and early 20th century were limited to bare necessities and were often overcrowded. Even so, often bare necessities were not present in Chicago tenements, furthering the poor quality of life and sanitary conditions. By the beginning of the 20th century, housing reformers noted that "'bath and toilet' rooms in the homes of large numbers of impoverished Chicagoans were either nonexistent or in dangerously defective condition." As a result, sicknesses were widespread among these areas, and many were unable to perform basic tasks in their homes.

Palazzo Nasciaro was probably the first public, and free, school in Naxxar. The school was opened after education boosted with education initiatives by the British government in Malta, at the same time when several other schools in Malta have been opened. Palazzo Nasciaro addressed a social need in Naxxar; a secondary school was built a throw-stone away, in the same street, within the former gardens of the palace. School toilet rooms were built and added to the palace when it was a school and are still part of the palace today.

In the often crowded living conditions of Japanese cities and with the lack of rooms that can be locked from inside in a traditional Japanese house, the toilet is one of the few rooms in the house that allows for privacy. Lawson Willard, 1940–70, in an event called "The Big Dig", the church was substantially enlarged by digging out under the church floor to create not a crypt or basement, but an English- inspired undercroft with choir rooms, classrooms, toilet rooms, a kitchen and meeting hall.
