Ralph C. Smedley (February 22, 1878 – September 11, 1965) was the founder of Toastmasters International, an international speaking organization with more than 352,000 members in 141 countries and more than 16,400 individual clubs. Illinois Wesleyan University recognized Smedley's service to mankind by conferring him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) in 1950. Santa Ana named a junior high school after him in 1955.

As examples of great orators, he held up President Franklin D. Roosevelt and humorist Will Rogers. He pointed out to colleagues that both men's highly acclaimed radio talks succeeded because each listener felt as if he or she was an audience of one. Over the years, Toastmasters continued to grow. In 1941, the organization was large enough to hire Smedley as its leader full-time.

Centenary offers many extracurricular activities and clubs. In the 1979 New Year Honours, Horne was appointed a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for public services. He is best known for his motivational best selling book, It Only Takes A Minute To Change Your Life. Robert Wilson Blakeley (August 30, 1922 – October 25, 2017) was an American graphic designer, known for making the fallout shelter sign. While working for the Army Corps of Engineers, Blakeley designed the sign as a civil defense measure during the Cold War. Born in Ogden, Utah, Blakeley attended public schools and served with the Marine Corps, seeing combat during World War II. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1954 and was the president of Toastmasters.

In 2006, Bellune semi-retired from the Chronicle and his son Mark succeeded him as editor. In retirement, Bellune started Riverbanks Press, publishing 11 books and self-study courses. Bellune is a former president of the South Carolina Press Association and has been named its Journalist of the Year. He is a longtime member of the National Speakers Association and Toastmasters International for which he helped establish three chapters and served as president and area governor.

The 1980s found a younger generation of leaders taking the reins of the fraternity. Keeping in mind one of its oldest traditions, being a fraternity run by undergraduates, the leadership and undergraduates began expanding in new directions. In 2006, Alpha Sigma Phi won the North American Interfraternity Conference's Laurel Wreath Award for the Ralph F. Burns Leadership Institute for new members. Friend and teammate Mickey Mantle described him as a "clean-living, practicing Christian." He was involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the American Tract Society (ATS) during his career, as well as many charities. After his career, he continued to be involved with those organizations. He served as the president of the Baseball Chapel for 10 years, served on the President's Council for Physical Fitness, and earned the Golden Gavel Award from Toastmasters International.

In 1994, her home town of Wadena, Saskatchewan named its major street Pamela Wallin Drive in her honour. In 1954 Brittain retired from the army after 37 years service (20 years as an RSM); he was well-above the normal retirement age for service personnel. After a spell as a salesman for an outsized clothing outfitters, he acted in films and plays. He also lent his legendary voice to a number of radio and television advertisements. Still an imposing figure in old age, Brittain was a popular presence at public functions and a member of the Society of Toastmasters.

Lindal used the most modern techniques in his instruction, whether as a volleyball coach or as a physical education teacher in the 1960s. Lindal completed the Iron Man triathlon at age 50. He rode his mountain bike from Victoria, BC to Manitoba at the age of 70, to fight what he calls, AADD Adult Adventure Deficit Disorder. Lindal, at the age of 78, continues to be an active member of ToastMasters International, and is a personal coach and mentor to many clients.

First known as a literary society, its members trained young black men in their early 20s to prepare for public speaking, like a Toastmasters of its time. They took turns preparing and giving speeches, discussed current political topics, and answered questions posed by fellow members. They intended the Institute to be a kind of preparatory school until members gained experience and skills in public speaking. In 1937, Ketner graduated from Boyden High School and went on to attend Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana as an accounting major. He excelled in his accounting and business law classes, but ran out of money and kept dropping out of a required public speaking course. Thanks to Toastmasters, he was eventually able to cope with his fear of public speaking. Returning home after leaving Tri-State College, he worked at Cannon Mills as an accountant, eventually rising to the position of auditor.

Davis has participated in numerous charitable causes. For several years she was one of the co-hosts on the Easter Seals Telethon on CBC television. She is also very active with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and has also worked for Sheena’s Place and the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, for which she raised over $160,000 in the summer of 1998, simply by shaving her head. Davis has been saluted by Rotary International (Paul Harris Fellowship), the Empire Club, Variety Club and Toastmasters International for her public service work.

After 10 months as mayor, Wohlsen was succeeded by Arthur E. Morris. Wohlsen received several awards during his term as mayor. In 1979, he received the Lancaster Citizenship Award from the American Legion Post 34, an Appreciation of Services from the City of Lancaster, and a Recognition Award from Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Committee. In 1980, he received the American Heritage Award from Lancaster Sertoma Club, the Distinguished Community Service Citation from Elizabethtown College, the Good Government Award from Lancaster Jaycees and the Toastmasters Communication Achievement Award.

Arohata also runs the Kowhiritanga ('Making Choices') Rehabilitation Programme specifically for female prisoners, many of whom have been exposed to sexual and psychological abuse during childhood and in their adult relationships. Most of the programme is based on cognitive-behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, group psychotherapy, recreational psychology and a narrative approach to therapy. A Toastmasters group and other volunteers have helped implement a variety of programs such as yoga, quilting, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, the Catholic-based grief "Seasons for Growth" programme, public-speaking skills, and a kitten-fostering programme.

Hickey was unchallenged in the March 18, 2014 Democratic Primary and is the Democratic nominee for the November 4, 2014 general election. Hickey said he entered the race for the 17th District Cook County Board believing that Gorman, his ally who was a key supporter in Hickey's election, was planning to run for higher office and that he would only seek Gorman's seat in the November 4, 2014 Illinois general election if she retired. DeLong also holds the distinction of being the first female marketing manager with General Electric in Canada. DeLong has long been an active community member. She served as president of Tuesday Nooners Toastmasters and extensively campaigned for the Cancer Fund, the Heart and Stroke Fund, the Canadian Red Cross Society, Flowers of Hope, and a number of municipal, provincial, and federal elections. DeLong has also drawn on her background in drama as an actress with Theatre Calgary, host of a television ski program, and singer with the Calgary Opera Chorus.

After retiring from cricket, she continued to work as a journalist and broadcaster and also became an award-winning after-dinner speaker, businesswoman and board director. In 1973, she was selected by the Guild of Professional Toastmasters as the Best After Dinner Speaker. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1972, and was one of the first ten women admitted to the MCC in 1999, as an honorary life member. In 2004, she was the first woman elected to the full committee of the MCC and latterly became a Trustee.

While in school he lettered in track, was president of the student senate, participated in the rifle team that won the intercollegiate championship for three years, and was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. Arthur Gorrie was born at West End in Brisbane on 19 May 1922. He ran a small hobby shop in Woolloongabba, and was involved with model aeronautical clubs including the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia and the Queensland Model Aeronautical Association from the early 1950s. He was also heavily involved with Toastmasters International, and was honored by them on many occasions, becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster in 1979 and Toastmaster of the Year on eight occasions. The 1964 national convention had 19 delegates from across Haiti representing thirteen local assemblies. In 1969 Ellswoorth Blackwell was able to present a talk to the Toastmasters International club on the subject of "Equality of the Sexes." In December 1976 a traveling Baháʼí from France, Andre Brugiroux, visited Haiti for a weeklong tour and was able to show a film of his at the Haitian French Institute on two occasions for an audience ultimately of some 670 people. In 1977 secretaries and treasurers of more than half the local assemblies of Haiti were gathered for a one-day institute conducted in the Creole language by native believers about assembly functions.

Initially concerned that the book would be merely a "highly idiosyncratic project", she found instead that New York book publishers engaged in a bidding war. Seven years in the making, Cain's book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, was published January 24, 2012. Cain wrote that her year of preparation before her February 2012 TED talk had unfolded in "three stages of accelerating dread", so she joined Toastmasters and scheduled a two-hour crash course with TED's speaking coach. But saying her butterflies had turned into "gut-wrenching knots", Cain worked for six full days with an acting coach immediately before the talk.

Moerner was born on June 24, 1953, at Parks Air Force Base in Pleasanton, California. From birth, his family called him by his initials W. E. as a way to distinguish him from his father and grandfather who are also named William. He grew up in Texas where he attended Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. He participated in many activities during high school: Band, Speech and Debate, Math and Science Contest Team, Bi-Phy-Chem, Masque and Gavel, National Honor Society, Boy Scouts, Amateur Radio Club, Russian Club, Forum Social Club, Toastmasters, "On the Spot" Team and Editor of Each has Spoken.

However, the idea never caught on - until he moved to California to take a job at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California. On October 22, 1924, he organized the first official club in the newly built YMCA building that eventually became Club No. 1 of Toastmasters International. The word about the club spread quickly and people in neighbouring communities and other states started asking Smedley how they could start their own club. Smedley decided to write the "Manual of Instructions" and "Ten Lessons in Public Speaking," in order to save time from writing redundant letters and replying to queries and inquiries about the same, he printed the guidelines and bound them in paper covers.

After graduating Gupta started performing at the Toastmasters Club. Gupta is one of those rare stand-up comedians whose comedy is based on self- deprecating humour as was evident from various ‘baniya’ jokes and none on ‘Sardar’.

During a demonstration of a Tibetan sand painting ceremony, Draper leapt up on the service desk in the Fiction section brandishing a M1911 pistol and claiming to have a bomb. He ordered nearby people into a conference room, which was already occupied by a Toastmasters group: librarian Gwen Page, six civilians, and Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Lloyd Prescott, who offered to change places with the last person who entered the conference room. Lt. Prescott was in plain clothes at the time and had his pistol hidden on his person. After Draper and the others entered the room Page began to count hostages, as ordered, and began to have them line up facing the wall while Draper made demands and described his plans.

Evans served as governor from 1965 until 1977, still the only governor to serve three four- year consecutive terms and the second to be elected to three terms after Arthur B. Langlie in Washington state history.

The Writer Guest of Honor was Brandon Sanderson, the Artist Guest of Honor was Stephan Martinière, the Fan Guests of Honor were Scott and Cathy Beckstead, and the Toastmasters were Dani Kollin and Eytan Kollin. $4300 was raised for the charity, the Greater Bay Area chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. BayCon 2013 was held May 24–27, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara.

During Superman's fatal battle against Doomsday, Irons, who was working in construction at the time, attempted to help Superman fight the deadly menace by picking up a sledge hammer, but was buried in rubble amidst the devastation. Shortly after Superman's death, he finally awoke and crawled from the wreckage, confused and saying that he "must stop Doomsday". He recovered, but to discover that the gangs in inner-city Metropolis (now unopposed by Superman) were fighting a devastating gang war using BG-80 Toastmasters, an upgraded version of his earlier AmerTek design. Irons created and donned a suit of powered armor in Superman's memory in order to stop the war, as well as the weapons, which were being distributed by Dr. Angora Lapin (also known as the White Rabbit), a former partner and lover during his time at AmerTek Industries.

MacCormack began his radio career in South Bend, Indiana, and in 1930 had his first large-market job with WIL in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1933, he moved to WBBM in Chicago, Illinois, where he was "an actor, announcer and producer." His obituary in the Chicago Tribune said, "He developed his technique of lacing music with poetry while announcing in his native Waterloo, Ia." Amongst these are a range of government services, large range of medical services, large range of financial services, Woolworths, Goodna Neighbourhood House, diverse range of sporting clubs, the Goodna Aquatic Centre, Brisbane River Tce retirement village, Tully Lodge retirement village, Oak Trees retirement village, Goodna Little Athletics, Goodna Rugby League Football Club, Western Spirit Football Club, Goodna Lawn Bowls Club, Goodna Netball Association, Goodna Cultural and Arts Centre, Jacaranda 2000 Toastmasters Club (Goodna), as well as local Goodna Scout Group, which was founded in 1969, celebrating its 40-year anniversary in 2009 and Girl Guide groups amongst others. Goodna was the first Brisbane/Ipswich suburb to receive the NBN (National Broadband Network) providing fast broadband services.

Many other voluntary groups operate in the area, some secular, such as the Raheny Heritage Society, Raheny Toastmasters, Raheny St. John Ambulance Division Raheny Order of Malta unit and Raheny Community First Responders and some church-related, such as the local conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Mothers' Union. A special form of community organisation was the Maywood Avondale Bettyglen TV Association (MABTVA), which provided a local TV cable service for parts of Raheny (most of Dublin being served by one of two large TV cable companies), using its own receiving station, situated at the back of the old Bettyglen Estate. The Raheny News, a local voluntary production founded in 1975, is a four-page newsletter, printed on green paper, and aimed at keeping residents of Raheny informed of current happenings, is produced weekly throughout most of the year by a group of local people, with some support from the Roman Catholic parish. It was founded by the late Fr Cornelius O'Keefe along with a few local volunteers, including Madeleine Meyler and Lily Leslie.

In a measure of just how little infrastructure existed in the Georgia Republican Party at the time, 107,555 votes were cast in the first-ever Republican gubernatorial primary held in Georgia, but the Democratic turnout surpassed 798,000.

Hotel Greenfield Hotel Greenfield, operated by ADCO Enterprises, LC, dates to 1920, the city's fourth hotel and the third at 110 East Iowa Street, proceeded at this site by The Wilson Hotel and later the Commercial Hotel. It is the largest commercial building in the central business district. Many early hotel patrons traveled to town by the C, B & Q freight-passenger train and were shuttled from the south Greenfield depot. Others arrived by automobile via Iowa's developing highway system. Despite the shadow of the Great War (WW I) local boosters were yet able to capitalize a 32-room state-of-the-art lodge at a cost of $65,000. Regional architect William Gordon designed the Classical Revival (Commercial) style building, to be constructed starting in 1919. It was completed and furnished by 1920. A gala Grand Opening was featured June 3, 1920, with William Don Carlos and George Musmaker toastmasters of the evening. The original “Greenfield Hotel Company” of April 8, 1919, was founded by local business owners and town boosters as a community improvement project, more than as a profit-making enterprise, as such.
