In February 1861 the viaduct was reported to have been completed and the extension across the Wye to an interchange point at Wyesham was opened on 1 July 1861. The Monmouth Railway line was at a higher level and minerals were tipped down into CPMU&R; wagons. It is doubtful if any serious work was done to improve the tramroad as, in August 1863, it was resolved to return 'the tramplates at Monmouth' to the suppliers. Drawn Sheet glass was made by dipping a leader into a vat of molten glass then pulling that leader straight up while a film of glass hardened just out of the vat – this is known as the Fourcault process. This film or ribbon was pulled up continuously held by tractors on both edges while it cooled. After 12 metres or so it was cut off the vertical ribbon and tipped down to be further cut.

Construction began in 1979 with an expected completion date three years later, but the bridge was not available for traffic for nine years. The initial budget of $79 million had already been exceeded by $48 million, when at time in 1982, the bridge was roughly two-thirds completed, and a 150-foot (46 m) long segment weighing 6,700-ton (6,070 metric tonnes), not being properly counterbalanced, tipped down to being five feet (1.5 m) out of alignment, with the other end rising 3.5 feet (1.1 m). A pier footing cracked, presumably due to resulting stress.
