Pieces in the festival this year include "Avidya: The Dark Inn," by the Japanese theater group Niwa Gekidan Penino, about puppeteers who arrive in a remote village; "En Alerte," a tribute to spiritual dancing by the Moroccan choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou; and performances by music groups like the traditional Irish troupe the Reel Thing and the local rock group Meadowlake. noorderzon.

The most significant partnership is with Center Theater Group, one of the largest nonprofit theaters in the country, which has commissioned, with Second Stage, six of the writers, including Ms. Nottage and another Pulitzer winner, Paula Vogel ("Indecent"); the Tony winner Lisa Kron ("Fun Home"); as well as Jon Robin Baitz ("Other Desert Cities"), Will Eno ("The Realistic Joneses") and Ms. Lee.

Organized in conjunction with the USC Roski MA Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere, and curated by Alex Sizemore, the day-long series of events features presentations and performances from the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, a collective that uses data visualization to present information on displacement in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and the Los Angeles Poverty Department, a community theater group based in Los Angeles's Skid Row.

" Over coffee and mini-conchas brought from a nearby Mexican bakery, Ms. Saracho described her experiences growing up in nine different port towns by the time she was nine ("my dad worked for Mexican customs"), her family's move to Texas when she was 12 ("I thought I spoke English, but then found out I didn't"), her playwriting career in Chicago (where she founded the theater group Teatro Luna), and her eventual relocation to Los Angeles in 2012 to work on series like "Looking" and "How to Get Away with Murder.
