Soon after they moved in, the pharmacy went out of business, she said, so they decided to leave their jobs — she as a publisher's representative in the Middle East, he as a model maker for architects — to open their own business and preserve the store's wood paneling, terrazzo floor, tin ceiling and other details.

In 20183, at Benítez's sister's mission-style ranch home in Isla de Francia, a wealthy suburb of Asunción, the architects brought broken bricks from Benítez's nephew's foundry and embedded them in concrete, like a poor man's terrazzo, to form a pergola of interlocking equilateral triangles that resembles the lattice arch at the Teletón center flattened out and lifted seven feet off the ground.
