The previous building at the site was destroyed in the Copenhagen Fire of 1795. It had housed a distillery managed by Andreas Johannes Spendrup. The current building was constructed for a tavernkeeper named Nicolaj Berthelsen in 1796–97. It was later acquired by distiller M. Birk before being sold to tavernkeeper H. O. Hark, and then to tavernkeeper Hans Olsen.

Peter Lavies or Lavis, Sr. (c. 1790 – c. 1876) was an American farmer, tavernkeeper and sometime moneylender from Root Creek, Wisconsin, who was postmaster there, and served three one-year terms as a Democratic member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from Milwaukee County. His son Hubert Lavies succeeded him at different times as postmaster, and as Assemblyman.

Jack Jouett was born to tavernkeeper John Jouett Sr. and his wife, Mourning Harris. The elder Jouett held a license to operate the Swan "ordinary" (tavern) in Albemarle County, Virginia. He owned 13 black slaves in 1790, which number declined to 11 slaves in 1799.U.S. Federal Censuses of 1790 and 1800 (reconstructed) for Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle County, available on ancestry.

Philo Barnes, son of the locally prominent tavernkeeper Asa Barnes and a major local landowner in his own right, purchased the house in 1810, and it was occupied by three generations of Barneses. In 1881 it was purchased by Levi Frost, also from a prominent local family that owned a local factory. The house remained in the Frost family until 1916.

The successful inn drew other settlers to "Clayville", which tavernkeeper Broadwell had named after a political hero, presidential candidate and Whig Party leader Henry Clay. Broadwell's admiration for Clay would have drawn him towards a fellow local admirer of the Kentucky politician, lawyer Abraham Lincoln. Legal records show that Broadwell retained Lincoln as his counsel on four separate occasions. In 1847, however, John Broadwell sold the tavern.

The name of the bar in the basement was in the early 1930s changed to Stafetten.

Isaac Barnato Joel was born on 29 September 1862 into a Jewish family, being one of three sons of Joel Joel (1836/7–1893), a London tavernkeeper of the King of Prussia, and Catherine "Kate" Isaacs (1840–1917). Catherine's brother was Barnet Isaacs, later known as Barney Barnato (1851–1897). Along with his brothers Solomon Joel and Woolf Joel, he was taken under the wing of Barney Barnato and made a fortune from the Barnato Diamond Mining Company.

In 1637, Mowry acquired of land some two miles from the Salem settlement and built his house on the lot which was to be the corner of Essex and Flint Street. About 1653, Mowry constructed a house which would come to be known as the Roger Mowry Tavern. In 1655, Mowry became a freeman in Providence and resided there until his death on January 5, 1666. Records show that Roger Mowry was the tavernkeeper and constable.

He is treated with cruelty and contempt by the other customers, one of whom gave him the nickname "Kong Yiji" based on his real surname Kong and a meaningless sequence of characters from a children's elementary text. Although Kong Yiji is a thief, he makes a point of always settling his debts with the tavernkeeper. He tries to teach the narrator orthographic trivia, but the boy rejects him; when he ingratiates himself with the town's children, they laugh at him and cadge food. Later, Kong Yiji is caught stealing and beaten until his legs break.

They depicted Harrison's opponent, President Martin Van Buren, as a wealthy snob who was out of touch with the people. In fact, it was Harrison who came from a family of wealthy planters, while Van Buren's father was a tavernkeeper. Harrison however moved to the frontier and for years lived in a log cabin, while Van Buren had been a well-paid government official. Nonetheless, the election was held during the worst economic depression in the nation's history, and voters blamed Van Buren, seeing him as unsympathetic to struggling citizens.

The General Lafayette Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a monument on October 6, 1911, to mark the site of the Battle of Chestnut Neck.

The name Strobl originally meant "scrubby" or "unkempt"; the town's name goes back to the 14th century, when the Wolfgangsee was known as the Abersee, and one Friedrich Stroblo appears as the owner of a Seegea fishpond or weir. Wolf Strobl took over property from the Laimer family about 1553, which became known as Am Schober, an inn which provided the basis for the later settlement's first given official mention in 1593, in connection with Hanns III Strobl, who was a local official and tavernkeeper in 1587. Later, Joseph Sigmund Berchtold und Sonnenburg married into the Strobl family and came into the property. Nonetheless, the name "Strobl" was firmly attached to the area around the Am Schober inn.

He then returned to Antwerp for nearly 20 years – perhaps his best period – and moved briefly to The Hague before settling in Brussels at about the turn of the century, where he remained until his death.Google books The brothers were recorded as Lutherans in 1585, but as they later did a large amount of work for the Jesuits, it seems probable they converted or reconverted to Catholicism after this date. All three, but especially Hieronymus, were described by contemporaries as leading disorderly lives, and had long criminal records, mostly for drunkenness and the like, but Hieronymus spent several months in prison in 1579-80 for an accidentally fatal drunken assault on a female tavernkeeper. They may have been let go by Plantin for this reason, and a famous letter from him complained that they only worked for a few days to raise enough money to disappear into the taverns, where he would have to seek them out, pay their bills, and get their tools out of pawn.
