The Tarock card game family is represented in Hungary by a variant for four players that uses a 42-card deck, variously called Hungarian Tarock (), Hungarian Tarokk or Paskievics ( in Austrian sources).

Tarockzwang is used in tarock games such as Königrufen and Tapp-Tarock and means "Tarock compulsion" or the requirement to play a Tarock card if one is led to the trick or if a player is unable to follow suit. It is a form of Trumpfzwang.

Forehand leads to the first trick. The trick is won by the highest tarock or, if no tarock is played, the highest card of the led suit. Players must follow suit (Farbzwang) but do not have to win the trick (no Stichzwang). If the led suit cannot be followed, a tarock card must be played (Tarockzwang).

The Trull plays a special role in the rules of almost all Tarock card games. The (rounded up) value of each card in the trull is five points, while all other trump cards (usually 19) count only one point each. This applies regardless of whether the Fool is the traditional special card or the highest trump card. Only in regional Italian variants can there be other trump cards that count more than one point.

Austrian law views Königrufen – like all variants of Tarock card games – as a game of skill (i.e. it depends more on the ability of the player than on chance), which is why it does not contravene the act on gambling monopolies despite usually involving (small) amounts of money being wagered.Wiener Zeitung: Ein gutes Blatt – Glück oder Können? In some tarock circles there are rules allowing the game to be stopped immediately after dealing by returning all the cards to the table, known as Zusammenwerfen. The game does not count and the same dealer deals a new hand: if you don't have a single tarock in your hand, you must do this; if the only tarock card you have is one of the trulls you may end the hand this way. It is advisable to discuss the validity of these rules with one's playing partners.

Viennese Grosstarock is a Tarock card game for three-players played with a 54-card Tarock pack. The name, which means 'big tarock', refers to the size of the pack which was larger than the 40-card pack used for the more common game of Zwanzigerrufen. In the same way, the name 'Grosstarock' was used in the 19th-century to refer to the original 78-card game at a time when the 54-card game was introduced and spreading throughout Austria and into Germany. However, the two games are not directly related.

Sedlaczek is a major promoter of Tarock card games. Das große Tarock-Buch ("The Big Tarock Book"), written with Wolfgang Mayr and Roland Kronigl, and Die Strategie des Tarockspiels ("The Strategy of the Game of Tarock"), written with Wolfgang Mayr, are regarded as standard German-language works for this family of card games. Together with Mayr, he founded the Vienna Tarock Cup (Wiener Tarockcup) in 2003 for the Tarock game of Königrufen and initiated a final for the Austrian tournament series, which is held annually at Linz Casino. Sedlaczek is also the main initiator of the reintroduction of Hungarian Tarock in Austria.

The word "Pagat" in the website's name is derived from the term given to the lowest ranking trump in Tarock card games such as Königrufen. David Parlett's book Teach Yourself Card Games recommends the site as the first and probably the only place one needs to seek for rules of card games, and his A-Z of Card Games refers to entries in pagat.
