The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza was an American mathcore band, from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The band was founded (sans a vocalist) in Monroe, Louisiana by members Layne Meylain, Mason Crooks, Brad Thompson, and Mike Butler. They relocated to Murfreesboro, TN to look for a frontman and found Jessie Freeland. The group derived their name (as a joke) from celebrity Tony Danza, upon one of his professions being tapdancing.

They chose their band name after actor Tony Danza; the humorous moniker is occasionally misinterpreted, as older concertgoers have attended shows in hopes of seeing Danza himself. Roush eventually formed the band Glass Cloud with The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza guitarist Josh Travis, and announced that they would enter the studio by November 2011 to record their debut, full-length album expecting a release in March 2012. Glass Cloud announced on April 20, 2012 that their debut album, The Royal Thousand, would be released on July 3, 2012 and would feature the songs from their double single, "White Flag" and "Counting Sheep." It was eventually released on July 10, 2012. Glass Cloud's second release, Perfect War Forever, was released on October 23, 2013.

In recent seasons, Currie has been a central figure in festivals hosted by the Southbank Centre. In autumn 2013 as part of the festival The Rest is Noise, Currie and members of the Colin Currie Group performed works by Stockhausen and Steve Reich, which Guy Dammann of The Guardian praised for being "technically impeccable and musically overwhelming". In 2014, The Southbank Centre presented Metal Wood Skin, a percussion festival dedicated to Currie. The festival included a number of new commissions, including the world premiere of Reich's Quartet for 2 Vibraphones & 2 Pianos and the UK premiere of Louis Andriessen’s Percussion Concerto, Tapdance, alongside new works by James MacMillan and Anna Clyne.

Jerry Roush had been talking about a new project entitled Glass Cloud for months on his personal Formspring account. In November 2011, It was announced by Roush on the Glass Cloud YouTube account that the members would include bassist Travis Sykes, and drummer Chad Hasty, both childhood friends of Roush. The band's guitarist was kept as a secret until later, when it was announced Joshua Travis from The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. It was announced December, 2011 that Equal Vision Records had signed the band and they were currently in the studio, recording their debut album, The Royal Thousand, set for a mid- year release.

Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes of Animals as Leaders tune their eighth strings to the same low E as the lowest string on a standard four-string bass guitar, and use the instrument's versatility to incorporate bass guitar techniques—such as string thumping (on "Earth Departure, An Infinite Regression") á la funk bassist Larry Graham and the double thumping technique pioneered by Victor Wooten — as well as harp-like arpeggios. Ihsahn of the black metal band Emperor began playing seven-string guitar in 1999 and first played eight-string guitar on his 2010 album After.
