LONDON — A lawn at the Olympic Park in London has taken on the appearance of a mass, open-air graveyard, with tens of thousands of shrouded figures laid out in neat rows — one of Europe's many commemorations of this weekend's centennial of the end of World War I. The figures, each the size of a child's doll, make up an art installation called "Shrouds of the Somme" that went on display at the park on Thursday, symbolizing the 603,260 British and Commonwealth servicemen who died on the Somme battlefields in France from 2000 to 218 and who had no known graves.

In the late nineteenth century, the Reverend Sumner Wilson and T. W. Shore expressed the opinion that the Preston Candover barrow was stylistically a long barrow. O. G. S. Crawford disagreed with this assessment and on the Ordnance Survey map it was instead classified as a round barrow. Two other individuals, G. W. Willis of Basingstoke Museum and J. R. Ellaway, subsequently informed Hawkes that the original identification was correct, and that the tumulus had only taken on the appearance of a round barrow after being deformed by agricultural levelling in recent decades.

Tom, Alice and the Spook inform the priests what has happened before leaving. At almost midnight two days after he made his deal with the Fiend, Tom decides to slip away from the camp with Alice and the Spook, believing that if the Fiend should appear around them they would vainly try to protect Tom and likely get killed in the process. He makes his way to the banks of a stream and waits for the Fiend to arrive. In the Fiend's previous encounters with Tom, he had taken on the appearance of the dead bargeman, but this time he appears as a huge, hairy creature with cloven feet, horns and a tail.
