Mahood speculated that, while vacationing in Death Valley on 23 July 1996, the family, short on time and wanting to visit Yosemite National Park on their way back to Los Angeles, attempted to take a shortcut to Yosemite on a route the difficulty of which they underestimated. Once their vehicle became stranded in a wash, the family traveled on foot southwards to seek help at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, where they may have expected to find a well-patrolled fenced perimeter, a common feature of military bases in Germany but not of military bases in the desert areas of the Southwestern United States. The family likely succumbed to heat stroke (average high temperature of 116.5 °F / 46.9 °C in July), dehydration and lack of shelter halfway to the base perimeter.

The Last of the Mohicans complete film In 1757, in the midst of the French and Indian War, three French divisions and their Huron Indian allies are advancing on Fort William Henry, a British stronghold south of Lake George in the colony of New York. Chingachgook (Theodore Lorch) sends his son Uncas (Roscoe), the last living warrior of the Mohican tribe, to warn the fort's commander, Colonel Munro (James Gordon), of the imminent danger. Uncas is admired by Munro's daughter Cora (Barbara Bedford), much to the displeasure of her suitor, Captain Randolph (George Hackathorne). Upon receiving Munro's plea for assistance, General Webb (Sydney Deane) dispatches a relief force of 3000 men to Fort William Henry with the Munro sisters, but with the aid of an Indian runner named Magua (Beery), the sisters and Major Heyward (Henry Woodward) take a shortcut through the wilderness.

In 263, Tian Xu participated in the campaign against Wei's rival state, Shu Han, as an officer under the Wei general Deng Ai. When Deng Ai and the Shu general Jiang Wei were locked in a stalemate at Jiange (劍閣), Deng Ai decided to take a shortcut from Yinping (陰平) to Jiangyou (江油) to bypass Jiang Wei's defences. Tian Xu disobeyed Deng Ai's orders when he refused to advance, so Deng Ai wanted to execute him. Later, after Deng Ai defeated the Shu general Zhuge Zhan at Mianzhu (緜竹), Jiang Wei retreated from Jiange to Ba Commandery (巴郡). Another Wei army led by Zhong Hui advanced towards Fu County (涪縣), where Zhong Hui ordered Tian Xu, Hu Lie, Pang Hui and others to lead troops to pursue Jiang Wei's retreating army.

This easy access for visitors to New Zealand, as well as the immediate access to the mountain trails from the village (unlike many other parts of the Alps where getting to the mountains requires a day or more tramp over more gentle terrain, which tends to dissuade the less prepared tramper) appears to lead to larger numbers of unprepared persons overstepping their abilities and getting into mortal peril. The total driving distance between Sainte-Thècle and Saint-Tite (via the "rang des Pointes" (Row of spikes)) is 12.1 km. The distance between the church of Sainte-Thècle and the southwest end of "Lac des Chicots" is 2.7 km from the Saint-Pierre-South path; then additional 2.2 km to reach the limit of Saint-Tite, through the Saint-Pierre-South Road; 1.5 km on the way among "Chemin des Pointes", 2.3 km on the way to reach the road of "Le Bourdais", 2.8 km to reach Notre-Dame Street; and 0.6 km to reach the church of Saint-Tite. However, winter roads and footpaths in summer or on horseback gave the possibility to take a shortcut, from the southwest end of the "Lac des Chicots" or another shortcut near the "lac le Bourdais" by cutting through forest lots, bypassing the mountains of the area, to reach the road Le Bourdais. With the construction of the road in 1882, the Rang Saint-Georges, residents of the town of Sainte- Thècle, could borrow this alternative route (the same as the first, from the church) to reach Saint-Tite.
