Another road was built in the early 1930s, to remove curves and widen the lanes. This was a two-lane road that still had many switchbacks, with one popularly known as "Dead Man's Curve". Construction of I-8 took place atop much of the roadbed of the highway from the early 1930s. The delay in extending a road to San Diego caused increased development in Los Angeles and resulted in that city becoming the trade and population center of Southern California, according to the San Diego Union.
The Gold Mint Trail provides miles of technical, rocky, gently-climbing mountain bike riding alongside the Little Susitna River. The "16-mile trail" is a steep downhill, 2-mile long (3 km) bike trail with of drop that was built in 2013, in between switchbacks of the Hatcher Pass road, starting at mile 16 of the Hatcher Pass Road. At Government Peak Recreational Area, a few miles (several km) south of Hatcher Pass, there are in three loops of singletrack, bermed, flow-style bike trails.
The Authion massif has a height of 2,080 metre (6,820 feet), it dominates about above the Alpine Valleys of Cairos, surrounded by steep slopes and deforested ravines. It is very difficult to access, only by a strategic path of switchbacks, containing mostly rocky ridges. This mountain range was crowned by important military works, namely Forca to the north and Milles Fourches to the south. These were strong, concrete protected forts topped with several meters of earth and locked by high gates and a deep ditch.
The trail in Spring This , packed-gravel trail was developed in 1986 as a N.Y.S. Environmental Quality Bond Act Project. It runs parallel to (NE of) Coddington Road in the Town of Ithaca, mostly following the abandoned rail bed of the Cayuga and Susquehanna Railroad, which was built in 1849 to ship coal from Pennsylvania mines to Ithaca for water shipment over the Erie Canal. Eventually it merged with the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad and was abandoned in 1956. The descent into Ithaca from South Hill was via two switchbacks.
It then passes through downtown before widening to four lanes and junctioning with SR 298. US 127/SR 28 then has an intersection with US 70N/SR 24 before going through Crossville's main business district and crossing the Obed River and coming to an interchange with I-40 (exit 317). US 127/SR 28 then leaves Crossville, narrowing to two lanes, and continuing north through more farmland. It then crosses into Fentress County via a couple of sharp switchbacks, in order to negotiate a bridge over Clear Creek.
From the Argentine side the route to the pass is a slow, gentle incline until entering a tunnel at approximately elevation. On the Chilean side the slope has a far higher grade, and the road descends down a long series of switchbacks to make the descent. Opened in 1980, the Tunnel of Christ the Redeemer (Spanish: Túnel Cristo Redentor) is long, and serves as an important land crossing between Chile and Argentina. At the middle of the tunnel is the national border, which is the termini of Chile Route 60 and Argentina Route 7.
Goodwin proposed a route involving 15 switchbacks and grades up to 8% ascending up the Logan Creek drainage to the pass. Vint decried Goodwin's route saying it would look "like miners had been there." Drawing on his training as a landscape architect, Vint instead proposed a simple route of one switchback with a gently rising grade of 6% that would meet the NPS goal of “lying lightly on the land.” After that meeting Mather consulted with Bureau of Public Roads (BPR) engineer Bill Austin and others as to which route should be selected.
The Legend's station is themed after a schoolhouse such as the one Ichabod Crane taught at in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". The station has only one accessible level, plus an enclosure for a school bell on the roof. Before entering the station, guests first go down a flight of stairs and under the roller coaster's brake run. At the bottom of the stairs, there is a multitude of queue switchbacks, going all the way back to the beginning of the brake run and the final two turns of the ride.
SR 243 begins at SR 74 in the San Jacinto Wilderness near Mountain Center, Riverside County as Idyllwild Road. The highway traverses north along a winding road through the community of Idyllwild. SR 243 makes a left turn at the intersection with Circle Drive and continues through Pine Cove. The road continues through the forest past Mount San Jacinto State Park through Twin Pines and the Morongo Indian Reservation before making a few switchbacks and descending en route to the city of Banning as the Banning Idyllwild Panoramic Highway.
During the later narrow- gauge era, the line was worked with the D&RGW;'s fleet of K-36 and K-37 2-8-2 steam locomotives. Depending on the direction, trains would run either double headed or with a banker on the steep gradients. Once the switchbacks had been reached, each train was broken up and run in sections. Loaded trains then traveled to the D&RGW;'s yards at Salida, where the Stone was transferred to standard gauge gondola cars via a purpose built rotating 'barrel'.
Rising to an elevation of above sea level at Beartooth Pass, the highway traces the historical route of Civil War General Philip Sheridan over the Beartooth Mountains. In his book Dateline America published in 1979, the late CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt referred to the highway as "the most beautiful drive in America." U.S. 212 looking west from Vista Point towards the Beartooth Mountains. Along this series of switchbacks, U.S. 212 climbs over to Beartooth Pass. Running northeast from the Beartooth Mountains, Highway 212 joins U.S. Route 310 before passing into the town of Laurel, Montana.
US 60 east at the junction with US 501 in Buena Vista From Lexington, US 60 runs easterly across the Blue Ridge Mountains. The switchbacks and grades along the crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains still used by U.S. 60 combine to form a very hilly and treacherous section. The east of Lexington become virtually impassable by most vehicles during inclement weather, particularly snow and ice. A short distance east of Interstate 81, as it passes through Buena Vista, even before leaving the city limits, the roadway immediately begins a steep climb.
It is named for Muddy Creek, a tributary of the Colorado that descends southward from the pass to join the Colorado at Kremmling. The pass is one of the lower crossings of the continental divide in Colorado, in a gap between the Park Range to the north and the Rabbit Ears Range to the east. It is rarely closed in winter and has a mild approach on both sides, with no switchbacks or tight spots. It provides the route of U.S. Highway 40 between Kremmling and Steamboat Springs.
More than 600 miles of trails provide access to the wilderness, many of them deceptively gentle at the start and become progressively difficult as they climb up multiple switchbacks into the higher elevations. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) crosses the area north-south for about 32 miles. The Boundary Trail begins in the southeast corner of the wilderness and meanders north and west for over 73 miles near the Canada–US border to eventually join the Pacific Crest Trail. Some trails are regularly used by horsemen who frequent the wilderness.
The ride's queue begins alongside the unload station and continues in one long stretch towards the load station. When in line with the load station, the queue performs several switchbacks before allowing riders to line up alongside air gates to let them on the ride. On the far side of the load station several television monitors loop through a video explaining how to get on the ride. The video also details that the riders' mission is to rescue a trapped sea lion for the Sea World Research and Rescue Foundation.
The tolls, collected at three separate gates, primarily reflected the cost of retaining a large crew of men with snow shovels to keep the road open in wintertime; they were able to keep the road open through its first five winters. When the snow was too deep, sleighs were used instead. During the summer the stages were able to take the switchbacks at full speed, with dogs running in advance to warn other traffic. A typical voyage over the pass required 10–25 hours and five changes of horses.Gregory (1996), 150.
Completed in 1921 and first paved in 1938, it rose slightly higher to , due to the absence of a summit cut. Located to the east, the old road was twice the length and had a multitude of switchbacks ascending a treeless slope. On the present highway, the descent north of the summit is less dramatic as the grade drops less than in the forest with few curves onto the Camas Prairie towards Grangeville at . White Bird Hill Summit marks the divide between the Salmon River and the Camas Prairie.
On 30 September 1972, Guadalupe Mountains National Park was dedicated and formally opened to the public. Farther up the canyon, the path becomes quite steep as it begins to follow a series of switchbacks, climbing nearly over the next , eventually reaching "the Notch" at an altitude around . From this high point, one can view McKittrick Canyon and the distant desert to the east and South McKittrick Canyon to the west. A portion of the canyon was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its archeological importance on 26 September 1991.
The Guizhou–Guangxi railway or Qian'gui railway (), is a single-track electrified railroad in Southwest China between Guiyang in Guizhou Province and Liuzhou in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The shorthand name for the line, Qiangui, is derived from the shorthand names of Guizhou (Qian 黔) and Guangxi (Gui 桂). The railway was originally built from 1939 to 1958 and had a total length of . From 2004 to 2009, the line was rebuilt to add tunnels and bridges in place of switchbacks over mountainous terrain and reduced in length to .
The Voyage's station, maintenance area, and transfer track (rightmost building), gift shop (building to the left of the station), and brake runs (behind the station), as seen from the roller coaster's lift hill. The Voyage's station is themed as a 17th-century ship, with the basement being the cargo hold, the second level being the deck, and the ride operator's controls being the "Captain's Quarters". The station has three levels: a ground floor, a second floor, and a basement. Before entering the station, guests may be redirected to several outdoor queue switchbacks.
The freight going to the gold and silver strikes in Nevada at the Comstock Lode were calculated to pay about $13,000,000 per year in wagon tolls—a fraction of this was well worth pursuing.Central Pacific toll road over Sierra Accessed July 17, 2009 One branch of the original Lincoln Highway over Donner summit built in about 1925 climbed the eastern Sierra to Donner Pass with multiple steep switchbacks. Today, the part of Interstate 80 in California and Nevada from 40 Mile Desert, Truckee River, Donner Pass, Sacramento very roughly approximates the original Truckee Trail route.
Neil M. Colgan (December 12, 1953 — July 25, 1979) was a Canadian adventurer, hiker, motorcyclist, biological researcher, naturalist, and national park warden. He was also a member of climbing expeditions in the Canadian Rockies, the Andes and Alaska. Vernal, October 2010 The south end of this route starts out in Vernal, Uintah County at the intersection of US-40 and US-191. From there, it travels north on US-191, enters Ashley National Forest, and passes Steinaker State Park and Red Fleet State Park as it starts to climb into the Uinta Mountains. It continues north on its climb, encountering several switchbacks before topping out close to in elevation. As it gradually starts to descend it enters Daggett County before it enters Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
On January 11, 2019, Bone was drafted 20th overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by Seattle Sounders FC. Due to his potential service commitments with the United States Air Force, Seattle would have to demonstrate a serious interest in Bone for him to qualify for a special military program that allows active duty service members to keep training as elite level athletes. After not signing with Seattle, Bone joined USL Championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks on June 14, 2019. On December 10, 2019, Bone joined USL Championship side Reno 1868 ahead of their 2020 season.
The name is derived from the iron oxide laden rock that forms their slopes. The pass separates the Uncompahgre and Las Animas River watersheds, and also serves as a dividing point between the Uncompahgre and San Juan National Forests. The pass is traversed by the Million Dollar Highway, U.S. Highway 550 between Ouray and Silverton, which is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. The pass is known for being treacherous in the wintertime due to the steep 8% grade and switchbacks on the north side facing Ouray, though the entire road is paved.
The Roman emphasis on constructing straight roads often resulted in steep slopes relatively impractical for most commercial traffic; over the years the Romans themselves realized this and built longer, but more manageable, alternatives to existing roads. Roman roads generally went straight up and down hills, rather than in a serpentine pattern of switchbacks. As to the standard Imperial terminology that was used, the words were localized for different elements used in construction and varied from region to region. Also, in the course of time, the terms via munita and vía publica became identical.
Highway 20 is scenic and very sparsely populated. It begins in Williams Lake at its juncture with Highway 97. It rises gradually for 23 km (14 mi) to the crossing of the Fraser River at Sheep Creek Bridge, from which it ascends via a series of steep switchbacks to the Chilcotin Plateau. Prior to improvements of the late 20th Century, including the Sheep Creek Bridge, it crossed the Fraser via a 1910s style suspension bridge, which was like those farther south at Gang Ranch-Dog Creek and Lillooet.
The ascent of Kala Patthar begins at Gorakshep (), the original base camp for Mt. Everest. After a brief dip to an ancient lake bed (which now contains a small lake and a helipad), the ascent makes its way up a series of steep switchbacks before levelling off somewhat as it traverses to the eastern side of the mountain. The trail then becomes steep once again until it reaches the wind-swept summit ridge. From there, a five- to ten-minute scramble over boulders takes one to the top, which is marked with prayer flags.
Kamloops Mountaineering Club below Garnet Peak in 1988 The Huntley Col trail starts at Four and a Half Mile Campground on the north shore of Azure Lake. It goes straight up the mountain without the pleasantry of switchbacks and is a steady grind of to the Col. This climb takes at least five hours with backpacks. Huntley Col, between Mount Huntley to the west and Batoche Peak to the east, is the best place to camp since there is a year-round snow patch for water and it is sheltered from the near constant wind.
An old road leads south along the ridge to summits to the south. Highway 82 just east of Independence Pass Beyond the pass, the road descends through three more long switchbacks to the floor of the Lake Creek valley. From there it heads south at first but quickly curving to the east. As it assumes that heading it passes the other set of gates, just west of the very small settlement of Everett, near where Lake Creek's North Fork joins the main stream.. See Video Log at mile 68.091.
It opened in November 1881, just as winter was beginning. The tolls, 25 cents for saddle horses and twice that for stages ($ and $ in modern dollars respectively) were primarily spent hiring a large crew of men who kept the pass clear in winter with snowshovels. They were able to keep the road through the pass open during its first five winters. In deep enough snow passengers switched to sleighs; in summer, dogs ran in advance to warn oncoming traffic through the pass itself as the stages took the switchbacks at full speed.
From here there are metal handholds driven into the rock to aid those who want to make the climb down to the valley below. Below that are a series of switchbacks that eventually lead to the Bedouin village of Hamaam. Mt. Arbel, with its 110-metre vertical drop, is the only known mountain in Israel to serve as a base jumping site. A hike to the top of Mount Arbel from the south is included in the Israel National Trail, and an approach from the west is part of the Jesus Trail; the trails converge temporarily at the peak.
The switchbacks are very technical as the runners are often closely packed entering this area, and the hill itself is both steep and loosely packed. Arguably, the most challenging obstacle is the infamous "poop out" hill, which is the steepest hill on the course (as well as one of the shortest). The final climb runners must conquer before a steep descent to the flat finish area is Reservoir Hill, which is a steady uphill. The end of the race loops back to the beginning (on the airstrip), passing behind where the runners for the next race are staged.

Due to being prohibitively expensive and hard to get after 9/11, Navy uniforms were replaced for a new uniform in the early 2010s. The uniform had, for some years, been referred to as the "field uniform", but the BSA now uses the terms "official Boy Scout uniform", "official Venturing uniform" and the like. With the introduction of the Switchbacks zip-off pants, the trend is towards a uniform emphasizing comfort and utility. The official policy of the BSA is that any uniform or uniform part which has ever been approved for use, is still acceptable.

The Beartooth Highway is the section of U.S. Route 212 between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City, Montana. It traces a series of steep zigzags and switchbacks, along the Montana-Wyoming border to the high Beartooth Pass in Wyoming. The approximate elevation rise is from to in in the most daring landscapes. When driving east to west the highest parts of the Beartooth Highway level off into a wide plateau near the top of the pass, then descend to the junction with Wyoming Highway 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Byway) near Cooke City, the northeast gateway to Yellowstone National Park.
Several large mudslides and rockslides on May 19-20, 2005 damaged or destroyed the Montana side of the Beartooth Highway in a dozen places between mile markers 39 and 51. The road was closed for reconstruction, and a $20.4 million construction contract issued which stipulated an October 2005 completion date. Construction was completed ahead of schedule however the highway did not reopen for a year. An estimated of rock was removed from a section of the highway near the top of the switchbacks, and construction crews drilled down to solid bedrock to create new supports for the road.
Idlewhile is a Longmont, Colorado based Americana folk band, described as pop infused country/bluegrass. Formed by Steven Phoenix, Giselle Collazo, Miguel Ramos (formerly of the Boulder, CO band Cabaret Diosa])and songwriter friend Doug Holden in May 2010. In the reign of Siegfried II of Westerburg (1275–1295), it successfully resisted a five-week siege by the Count of Cleves. Weyden, p. 40. Successive archbishops continued to improve the defenses with stronger walls, adding levels to the central Bergfried, which was cylindrical, not square like many medieval donjons. In addition to the construction of the small residence, these archbishops also expanded the inner works to include dungeons and a chapel; they fortified the walls with towers and crenelations, added a curtain wall, and improved the roads that led to the entrance in a series of switchbacks.
The roadway has many switchbacks and on both the eastern and western slopes, with White's Gap at the peak. After descending on the eastern side, travelers reach Amherst, where Route 60 intersects north-south U.S. Route 29. View west along US 60 at the bridge over the James River between Appomattox and Nelson counties Continuing east, there is an additional shorter section of mountainous terrain before the road levels out somewhat into the rolling Piedmont region through the middle belt of the state. At Sprouse's Corner in Buckingham County, north-south U.S. Route 15 is crossed.
The film begins with a light-years- long, computer-generated trip through swarms of stars in the Milky Way; the compressed trip ends by focusing on the Solar System. Even though our planetary system seems unremarkable, it is in fact "the only place we know, in all the universe, to harbor life." Mount Fuji in Honshu, Japan, was photographed in February, 2016, using the most powerful camera lens then aboard the ISS. The photograph shows details of Japan's famous volcano, including switchbacks in the trail leading to the summit crater and features of the Hōei flank crater.
The A8 provides a scenic route to the Lake Thun to Interlaken, passing the former Mystery Park and continues along the southern shore of Lake Brienz for Brienz BE, where it winds its way on up to the Brünig pass. A8 with a view to Brienz, Lake Brienz and the side of Brienz Rothorn. the north side of the pass extends down to Lungern, where a bypass tunnel is currently under construction (scheduled completion 2012). It continues parallel to the Lake Lungern shoreline until the hamlet of Kaiserstuhl OW and then with a series of steep switchbacks drops down to Giswil.
The Cascade Tunnel refers to two railroad tunnels (original and its replacement) in the northwest United States, east of the Seattle metropolitan area in the Cascade Range of Washington, at Stevens Pass. It is approximately east of Everett, with both portals adjacent to Both single-track tunnels were constructed by the Great Northern Railway. The first was in length and opened in 1900 to avoid problems caused by heavy winter snowfalls on the original line that had eight zig zags (switchbacks). The current tunnel is in length and entered service in early approximately south of and lower in elevation than the original.
The Phoenicia Trail, part of the Long Path, the former bark road extended to the fire tower, is a widely used route to Tremper's summit. Blazed with red plastic DEC markers, it begins south of Phoenicia along Old Route 28 (now Ulster County Route 40), across from the Esopus. It joins the old road after a half-mile (1 km) and follows it through several switchbacks past the old quarry, a spring, the Baldwin Memorial Lean-To and another spring. It reaches the lean-to and fire tower at , after climbing nearly 2,000 vertical feet (610 m) from the trailhead.

SR 231 begins at the Angel Lake fee booth, providing access to the lake and nearby picnic and campground areas. From there, the highway heads in a general eastward direction, descending through switchbacks along the east side of the East Humboldt Range. Once traveling about to clear of the mountains, the road turns more sharply to the north. The final sees the route turn more directly eastward to enter the town of Wells. SR 231 comes to its northern terminus at the intersection of Angel Lake Road and Humboldt Avenue (SR 223) in Wells, just south of Interstate 80.

Running north from Chard Junction, the line climbed at first at 1 in 80 and then at varying gradients between 1 in 200 and 1 in 94 until the divergence from the Town station line at Chard. Then it fell at an average of 1 in 80 almost to Donyatt Halt. The general level from there to Creech Junction is flat, but there were some switchbacks climbing briefly to Ilton and falling again, repeating that at Hatch, and rising again at 1 in 80 to a local summit at Ash, falling again at the same gradient.
Electrification reached the line from the Taebaek Line, when the catenary on the 85.5 km long section from Gohan on the Taebaek Line via junction station Baeksan to Donghae went into service on December 5, 1975. On March 28, 1997, the 87.0 km long section from the junction to Yeongju followed, and electrification was completed with the 45.1 km long Donghae–Gangneung section on September 8, 2005. The steep descent from Dongbaeksan to Dogye contains switchbacks, which hinder smooth traffic. In addition, a 1996 investigation found that the section is endangered by soil subsistence and the ageing of tunnels.
Even then there were many steep grades, a poor surface, switchbacks to gain and descend hills, and few guardrails. Bridges, which progressed during 1942 from pontoon bridges to temporary log bridges, were replaced with steel bridges where necessary. A replica log bridge, the Canyon Creek bridge, can be seen at the Aishihik River crossing; the bridge was rebuilt in 1987 and refurbished in 2005 by the Yukon government as it is a popular tourist attraction. The easing of the Japanese invasion threat resulted in no more contracts being given to private contractors for upgrading of specific sections.
View east from the west end of SR-20 Midway along Utah State Route 20 SR-20 begins at I-15, Exit 95, north of Paragonah, and heads east and southeast through a pass between the Markagunt Plateau and the Tushar Mountains. It ends at an intersection with US-89 at Bear Valley Junction. Trucks are routed from I-15 and US-89 onto SR-20 in preference to SR-9 and SR-14 to avoid steep grades and switchbacks required to cross the Markagunt Plateau. Because of this, SR-20 is included in the National Highway System.
Some routes are classified as 1A in the winter period (from late autumn to May), according to the Soviet grading system. Nowadays because of its prominence too many unskilled extreme-lovers are taking attempts to climb it in winter, resulting in regular frostbite or even deaths. The most popular approach to the summit starts from the tour-basa Zaroslyak on the mountain's east face and gains more than 3,600 vertical feet (1,100 meters) along a steep path with few switchbacks. There is a steeper route (marked with blue signs) and a more gentle one but a lengthier one (marked with green).
Once across a bridge, the trail continues westward, close to Franklintown Road, utilizing two switchbacks to climb the steep grades. Along this stretch, another unnamed trail branch leaves to the south, a sidepath running alongside Winans Way. At William Street, the trail moves onto Franklintown Avenue, which utilizes traffic calming measures such as speed bumps as it passes between several homes. At Dogwood Road, the trail enters its own alignment south of Franklintown Road for the last time, and has a long curve alongside a ramp exiting Security Boulevard, Security Boulevard itself, and a ramp exiting Interstate 70.
The club announced the signing of midfielder Andrew Tinari on February 7, the day before a scheduled preseason friendly against Colorado Springs Switchbacks. However, inclement weather in Colorado Springs precluded the team from travelling to Albuquerque, and the match was canceled, replaced by a 60-minute intrasquad scrimmage. On February 12, 2019 top scorer Kevaughn Frater completed a move to Indian Super League club Bengaluru FC on a short-term contract. The next day, French midfielder Joris Ahlinvi became the final preseason addition to the squad, after not signing with FC Cincinnati as 53rd overall pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.
It had frequent obstacles, turns and switchbacks, making it difficult for wagon trains, mules and oxen, the common beasts of burden for the emigrants. The 1834 trappers' rendezvous was held at a meadow around Hams Fork, (near present-day Granger, Wyoming); the annual events were occasions for sales between mountain men, who were independent trappers and traders, and agents of the fur companies, who bought the furs and supplied the traders with goods. The rendezvous were organized by the fur companies and were several-day affairs that were business, but festive in nature and oiled by alcohol.
Greenspan was selected in the second round (26th overall) of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by Colorado Rapids. Greenspan made his professional debut in a 4–1 win in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup over the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. He served a year of active duty before the Navy transferred him to the Navy Reserve, allowing him to pursue a soccer career.
Road construction began in 1950 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers from a local area on Palo Colorado Road known as "The Hoist" to Bottchers Gap (), the site of former homesteader John Bottcher's home from about 1885 to 1900.Sherman Comings, a descendant of a family who purchased property near Bottcher's Gap in 1927, says his family spelled the name "Boucher." The road leaving Bottcher's Gap traverses extremely steep terrain, necessitating four narrow switchbacks. The entire road into the central camp area was completed in the summer of 1951. Construction of the central buildings and water systems began in 1953 and the camp was dedicated on May 31, 1954.
The club also announced the resigning of the three Puerto Rican footballers on the team for another season; Hector Ramos, Jorge Rivera, Joseph Marrero. On January 30, the team announced two new signings for the 2017 season: Conor Doyle who last played for Colorado Rapids before being loaned to Colorado Springs Switchbacks in 2016, and Yuma who last played for Rayo OKC in 2016. On February 10, the club announced the preparation for the 2017 NASL Season, as well as the Caribbean Club Championship, Puerto Rico FC will take part in the 7th Annual Bayamón City Cup which begins February 10 at the Bayamón Soccer Complex.
The official Cub Scout uniform is worn by youths in Cub Scouting. The basic Cub Scout uniform consists of a navy blue shirt, navy blue pants, shorts or Switchbacks, navy blue socks with gold tops for Cub Scouts or orange tops for Tiger Cub Scouts, a navy blue web belt with brass buckle with Cub Scout logo, a neckerchief with slide, and a navy blue cap with a colored panel. It took months to arrive as an army of men felled trees and built plank roads over which to haul the machines and supplies. Once the caravan arrived, they set up their sawmill and used the lumber to build bunkhouses, stables, a machine shop, warehouses, a hospital, a restaurant, a saloon, a steam plant, and the station house. The construction camp was called Tunnel City and from 1886 to 1888 it housed over 200 construction workers who were building switchbacks and drilling the tunnel. Up the hill towards the Stampede Pass summit, 1,000 Chinese laborers who were also working on the tunnel were encamped.
In August 2017, the USL announced that the 2018 season will span 34 games, the longest regular season the league has ever run. The expansion was spurred by the addition of six new clubs for the 2018 season: Atlanta United 2, Fresno FC, Indy Eleven, Las Vegas Lights, Nashville SC, and North Carolina FC. On January 14, 2018, the league announced home openers for every club. Saint Louis opened the season on the road against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, opening the 2018 USL season from Edinburg. The club had to wait until March 31 to open up Toyota Stadium, hosting Colorado Springs Switchbacks in their home opener.
Slumgullion Pass (elevation ) is a mountain pass in southwestern Colorado traversed by State Highway 149 east of Lake City. The north side has the steepest grade of any continuously paved road in Colorado (9%), but the pass does not close often in winter because snowplows clear the route regularly during this season. It has a few switchbacks and tight spots, but other than that, most travelers will find it an easy, scenic route. Technically speaking, the current highway does not traverse the true Slumgullion Pass, which lies just off the highway on the ridge between Cebolla Creek and the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, at an elevation of about .
The Vardy community, sometimes called "Vardy Valley," is situated in a narrow valley carved by Blackwater Creek between Newman's Ridge on the south and Powell Mountain on the north. The valley, part of the Clinch River watershed, stretches for roughly from Mulberry Gap southwest of Vardy to the Blackwater community in Lee County, Virginia to the northeast. Vardy is still relatively isolated, its primary access being from Sneedville via State Highway 63, which crosses Newman's Ridge through a series of steep switchbacks before intersecting Vardy Blackwater Road near Mulberry Gap. The Vardy School Community is located along Vardy Blackwater Road about east of the road's junction with TN-63.
The trail runs southeast to northwest from trail marker 0 in Washington Park to Northwest Newberry Road, just beyond trail marker 30 on the ridge above the southeastern end of Sauvie Island. The straight-line distance from beginning to end is about , but because the trail includes many switchbacks and hairpin turns, it is long. In 2019, the City of Portland constructed Barbara Walker Crossing to allow Wildwood Trail users to safely pass over West Burnside Street. Wildwood Trail begins in Washington Park near the Oregon Zoo, a light rail stop, the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the World Forestry Center and the Hoyt Arboretum.
Bad Berleburg railway station The Rothaar Railway () is a 48 km long German branch line running from Kreuztal on the Ruhr–Sieg line to Bad Berleburg via Erndtebrück () with a through connexion to Siegen. The line was opened to Hilchenbach in 1884 and extended to Erndtebrück and Marburg in 1888/89. The single-tracked line runs between Kreuztal and Hilchenbach along the southern slopes of the Ferndorf valley and winds tightly in order to gain height through the Rothaargebirge mountains using two switchbacks between Hilchenbach and Erndtebrück. The tunnelling under the ruins of Ginsburg castle by the Schloßberg Tunnel, near the long-distance walking trail of the Rothaarsteig, is particularly picturesque.
Construction began in 1858 on Centre County's first railroad, the Bellefonte and Snow Shoe Railroad, which entered the valley through the Spring Creek water gap at Milesburg. By 1862 the line up the Wallace Run side valley, from Wingate to the timber and coal resources of Snow Shoe, was completed. It ran along the stream bed to the foot of the Allegheny Front, then climbed half of the line's vertical rise via a unique series of switchbacks in a steep box canyon near . The Pennsylvania Railroad financed the construction of the Bald Eagle Valley Railroad line through the valley, along the flood plain from Tyrone to Lock Haven.
The red and mauve Kayenta siltstones and sandstones that form the slopes at base of the Navajo Sandstone cliffs record the record of low to moderate energy streams. Poole (1997) has shown that the streams still flowed toward the east depositing from 150 to 210 m (500 to about 700 feet) of sediment here. The sedimentary structures showing the channel and flood plain deposits of streams are well exposed on switchbacks below the tunnel in Pine Creek Canyon. In the southeastern part of Zion National Park a stratum of cross bedded sandstone is found roughly halfway between the top and bottom of the Kayenta Formation.
In this OpenStreetMap map of Loveland Pass, Colorado, symbol exaggeration of the thickness of the roads has made them run together. Geometric exaggeration of the hairpin turns and displacement of the roads alongside the interstate are needed to clarify the road network. Exaggeration is the partial adjustment of geometry or symbology to make some aspect of a feature larger than it really is, in order to make them more visible, recognizable, or higher in the visual hierarchy. For example, a set of tight switchbacks in a road would run together on a small-scale map, so the road is redrawn with the loops larger and further apart than in reality.
The rock was later known as Castle Rock, until 1915 when its name was changed back to Beacon Rock.GNIS says its decision to rename was in 1915: Henry J. Biddle purchased the rock in 1915 for $1 and during the next three years constructed a trail with 51 switchbacks, handrails and bridges. The three-quarter mile trail to the top, completed in April 1918, leads to views in all directions. The United States Army Corps of Engineers planned to destroy the rock to supply material for the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia (see Columbia River Bar), and dug three caves on the rock's south side.
The trail follows a series of inclines and switchbacks as it winds its way across the top of the ridge. Views through the treeline of Cocke County to the north alternate with views of Camel Hump Ridge and the main Smokies crest to the south as the trail switches back and forth across the ridgeline. As it ascends the crest of Snake Den Ridge, the trail traverses several backbone formations lined with thick stands of rhododendron and mountain laurel known as heaths (sometimes called "hells" in Appalachia). Heaths often appear on narrow ridges, where the soil is too poor to support larger wooded plants.
From the point where the road crosses the Coast Range via Heckman Pass in Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park at an elevation of 1487 m (4879 ft) the road descends 43 km (27 mi) of steep, narrow road with sharp hairpin turns and two major switchbacks to the Bella Coola Valley. The descent includes a 9 km (5.6 mi) section with grades of up to 18% (about 1 in 6). The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered on one side by cliffs and on the other side by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails.
What visitors used to see when disembarking from Lady of the Lake at Lucerne LandingHolden Village remains nearly as isolated today as it was at its founding, and it is still impossible to reach the Village by car alone. Buses leave Holden Village in the morning and head down the mountain on a treacherous set of switchbacks. The landing on Lake Chelan associated with Holden Village is called Lucerne, and it is here that the buses meet the daily boats coming and going. The Chelan Boat Company, located in Chelan, Washington, runs two boats (the Lady of the Lake II and the Lady Express) to and from the Village.
The first three matches in June were postponed due to the suspension of play, including games scheduled against OKC Energy at home on June 10, Phoenix Rising at home on June 13, and Reno 1868 away on June 20. On June 24, the USL released a revised competition format to play an abbreviated season, aiming to return in July. Teams would be drawn into eight regional groups of four or five teams, with the top two from each group advancing to the 2020 USL playoffs. The following day, the club was placed into Group C with Colorado Springs Switchbacks, El Paso Locomotive, and Real Monarchs.
The trail provides connections to eight communities, five schools, and several suburban areas within Klamath Falls. Along each section, the trail passes through 13 interpretive signs highlighting historical interest points along the trails, recalling its old railroad years, including the historic 1898 steel bridge spanning the A Canal, all sites available for park visitors. Past the steel bridge sits a restored caboose, the last one used to run the rails to Klamath Falls. Major trailheads are located along the trail identified by an OC&E; State Trail railroad sign, including Crosby Street in Klamath Falls, Wiard Park, Oregon Route 39, Reeder Road, Switchbacks, Bly and Horse Glades.
California Newspapers, 1865–66 accessed March 19, 2013. Initially, many valleys were bridged by "temporary" trestles that could be rapidly built and were later replaced by much lower maintenance and permanent solid fill. The existing railroad made transporting and putting material in valleys much easier—load it on railway dump cars, haul where needed and dump it over the side of the trestle. The Summit Tunnel at Donner Summit, West Portal (Composite image with the tracks removed in 1993 digitally restored) The route down the eastern Sierras was done on the south side of Donner Lake with a series of switchbacks carved into the mountain.
Garnet Canyon is located in Grand Teton National Park in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The canyon was formed by retreating glaciers which reached their last glacial maximum around 15,000 years ago. While Garnet Canyon is a less popular destination for recreational hikers than nearby Cascade Canyon or Death Canyon, it is an important approach to many significant and popular mountaineering climbs including routes found on Grand Teton, Middle Teton, South Teton and Disappointment Peak. The trailhead for Garnet Canyon is found at Lupine Meadows, and the canyon itself is reached after several miles of hiking through forest and switchbacks which climb a large lateral moraine.
Through the mountains, SR 4 is not suitable for large trucks, buses, or RVs, as it becomes very steep and eventually single-track, with no center dividing line shortly after the Mount Reba Turnoff to Bear Valley Ski area, with tight switchbacks. The pass is not plowed for snow, and thus closes during the winter months, often from November through as late as May. Thus, no passage between the Mount Reba Turnoff and Markleeville is possible. The western slope is plowed and rarely closes, even for a few hours, but often has chain restrictions during and immediately following storms, usually just east of Arnold.
PeruRail's routes are divided into two sections; there are no tracks through Cusco. The line between Cusco and Machu Picchu - Ferrocarril Santa Ana - is a narrow gauge line, which boasts a series of five switchbacks called locally 'El Zig-Zag', which enable the train to climb up the steep incline out of Cusco, before it can begin its descent to the Sacred Valley of the Incas and then continue down to Machu Picchu. However, this section of the route (between Cusco San Pedro station and Poroy) - which had been suspended - resumed by IncaRail from May 2019. Other trains to Machu Picchu leave from Poroy, just outside Cusco, instead.
Timber trestles were used to span small valleys. Three lettered switchbacks were built on the eastern slope and five on the steeper western slope; the approach grade to each was a maximum of 2.2% although the grade increased within the switchback system itself to a maximum of 3.5% on the east and 4.0% on the west. Trains traversing the route entered a spur about 1000 feet long at the end of each switchback, the track was switched and the train moved out again to the next leg, a tedious process of going forward and then in reverse until the Cascade Range was crossed. The switchback route complicated and time consuming.
On January 20, 2015, Hunter was selected in the third round (49th overall) of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by the Houston Dynamo and signed a professional contract with the club a month later. On April 11, Hunter was sent on loan to USL club Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. He made his professional debut that same day in a 1–0 victory over Real Monarchs SLC. He scored his first league goal for the club on 24 June 2015 in a 5-0 home victory over Orange County SC. His goal, the fourth of the match, came in the 59th minute. Hunter joined United Soccer League side Rio Grande Valley FC Toros for their 2016 season.
The path can be closed during winter because of heavy snows blocking both ends and the threat of rockfall. Its name comes from the four ton Christ the Redeemer of the Andes (Cristo Redentor de los Andes) statue placed in 1904 near the Uspallata pass at an elevation of . The pass was the highest point of the road before the opening of the tunnel lowered the maximum elevation by , eliminated 65 switchbacks and shortened the route by . On 19 September 2013, nearly 15,000 Chileans got stranded on the Argentine side, when the pass had to be closed for 10 hours because of freezing temperatures and between 40 and 50 centimeters of snow.
In March 2019, Romero was loaned to Colorado Springs Switchbacks of the USL Championship ahead of the 2019 season. Romero missed the first two matches of the 2019 season as his loan move wasn't completed in time, so he made his debut for the club on 23 March 2019 in a 1-0 victory over San Antonio. He made a near-instant impact, scoring the match's lone goal in the 86th minute with a long-range effort just four minutes after coming on in place of Mike Seth. Romero made another substitute appearance the next week against Phoenix Rising before being awarded a start against Orange County on April 6, his first for the club.
Remains of stage stops are scattered throughout Wyoming and northern Colorado including well preserved buildings at Virginia Dale, Colorado and Point of Rocks, Wyoming. The trail is occasionally marked with markers and historical signs where the trail crosses a highway. Switchbacks on the route can be clearly seen when on highway 287, just north of the town of Laporte, Colorado, above the present day Forks Lumber company, and portions of the route just east of that spot are well preserved and easily seen (although they are crossing through private property). Cabins from Camp Collins an army post and stop along the Overland Trail are located at the Heritage Center at the Fort Collins Museum and Discovery Science Center.
Both the design and construction of the Wild Mouse, which begun in 1955, were done entirely in-house by the Pleasure Beach. Designed by Frank Wright and opened in 1958 it was the first major ride to be built at the Pleasure Beach since World War II. The ride was subsequently modified in the 1960s by the Velare Brothers (the originators of Sky Wheels and Space Wheels). The top circuit preceding the switchbacks, containing a big drop and a shallower dip, was added making the ride about longer at 1,266 ft. Apparently, this change was inspired by a similar alteration of the Velare's Wild Mouse at Nu-Pike in Long Beach, California.
A Switchback is a challenge in which teams encounter a task from a previous season that was markedly difficult or memorable. Other than making note of the past tasks, Switchbacks have no effect on the Gamepaly. The Switchback is associated with the same country or city as the original task, and often done at the same specific location. For example, Season 15 featured its first-ever Switchback from season six's hay- rolling Roadblock in Sweden, or in Season 27 featured a Switchback from the first season, where teams had to re-perform the very first task in The Amazing Race history: free fall into the Batoka Gorge and swing above the Zambezi River.
Lake Tahoe line in 1893 The V-shaped flume built by the Summit Fluming Company in 1869 was purchased first, and lumber moved uphill in wagons until the Lake Tahoe Railroad was built in 1875 to carry production from two more sawmills C&TL;&F; built at Glenbrook in 1873 and 1875. The route climbed following North Canyon Creek and required two switchbacks to reach the summit at an average grade of 2.44 percent with some as steep as 4 percent. Baldwin Locomotive Works built two 2-6-0 locomotives named Tahoe and Glenbrook. Either locomotive could pull six flatcars of lumber to the summit, and trains sometimes used twelve cars with one locomotive pulling and the other pushing.
RGS C-16 #9, Probably somewhere on Lizard Head pass. Once it was apparent to Mears that the Silverton Railroad wouldn't be able to access Ouray, He considered a Railroad route heading west of Durango. It would head north following Lost Creek and the Dolores River, accessing the mining community of Rico, then over Lizard Head Pass, following the San Miguel River up to the Dallas Divide, and then into the town of Ridgway. This route would essentially bypass the issues that kept the SRR from completing the line from Ouray and the need for various switchbacks and Wyes the SRR Required to traverse Red Mountain Pass, So in 1889, he incorporated the Rio Grande Southern.
The ride's entrance and queue are built into the park's older performance amphitheatre and features a building style reminiscent of New Mexico's Pueblo Revival and Territorial Revival architecture. The renovated building is topped with paintings of the namesake southwestern rattle snake next to prickly pear cactus, above a wood and steel awning that covers three Western-style wooden doors, with a broader door at center for the main entrance. The queue itself features a waiting area with rails to guide patrons through many switchbacks where the amphitheater seating used to be. There are then stairs leading up to a rebuilt stage area with a wood and steel western style load/unload station for the single 6 car train.
From there the course follows all of the trails in the Birch Hill system (excepting the classic-only trails) in a counter-clockwise direction. After approximately 27 km the course again returns to the top of the alpine ski hill and proceeds back to the river and to the start/finish area by the same route. In 2012 the 50 km race will make use of a new trail constructed to gain access to the Birch Hill Recreation Area. Rather than climbing directly up the alpine ski hill, the Sonot Connector trail climbs through the forest to the east of the ski hill, starting from the top of the rope tow and making two long switchbacks.
Following this summit, SH-21 descends in switchbacks to the village of Lowman at above sea level. At Lowman is the intersection with the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway, which descends with the South Fork of the Payette River through a canyon popular for whitewater rafting, westward to Banks at Highway 55. A devastating wildfire ravaged the area around Lowman in 1989; it destroyed and 26 structures, but without injuries or fatalities. North of Lowman, SH-21 ascends the South Fork of the Payette River to Grandjean, on the west side of the Sawtooths, and climbs the Canyon Creek tributary to the Banner Creek Summit at , the route's maximum elevation, over above Lowman.
On 5 February 2013, McGuinness signed with newly formed USL Pro side VSI Tampa Bay FC. He made his debut on 1 June as a substitute in an inter-league match with the Portland Timbers Reserves which ended in a 4–4 draw after Tampa Bay conceded three unanswered goals in the second half. On 23 January 2015, it was announced that McGuiness that was the second player on the squad of Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC McGuinness was announced on 14 April 2016 as a member of the initial roster for the Tampa Bay Rowdies' NPSL reserve side Rowdies 2. Despite being rostered with the NPSL, McGuinness never appeared in a match with Rowdies 2.
On July 2, the revised schedule was finalized to include inter-group matches against OKC Energy, Phoenix Rising, and Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. Before the season restarted, on July 9 New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that the club would not play games or practice in New Mexico, as part of a wider moratorium on contact sports ordered in response to the coronavirus pandemic. On July 11, New Mexico United resumed play at Colorado Springs Switchbacks in their second competitive match of 2020. Chris Wehan and Saalih Muhammad scored to earn a 2–1 win, the latter of which would win the league's online fan poll goal of the week award.
By 1903, the tracks reached the Tolland area just east of the Continental Divide where Sumner’s second major engineering feat involved crossing Rollins Pass at an elevation of . Originally, Moffat had planned to build a tunnel underneath the pass but funding was not available at the time. The DN&P; climbed to Rollins Pass using a series of switchbacks with a 4% grade at many locations; tunnels at various places as well as huge loops were also needed so as to get over the pass. At the time, it was the highest mainline railroad ever constructed in North America; Rollins Pass was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 for its railroad related engineering feats.
Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Busio joined the Sporting Kansas City academy in 2016 from North Carolina Fusion. On August 25, 2017, Busio signed a Homegrown Player contract with Sporting Kansas City, making him the youngest player to sign with an MLS club since Freddy Adu joined D.C. United in 2004. He made his professional debut on April 4, 2018, appearing for Sporting Kansas City's United Soccer League affiliate side, Swope Park Rangers, starting in a 1–0 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Busio went on to make his first MLS appearance for Sporting Kansas City on July 28 as a 77th-minute substitute in a 3–2 loss against FC Dallas.
These large boulders can provide hikers some respite during the 6.5-mile (10.6 km) journey to the summit of Mount Le Conte. From Rainbow Falls, the trail continues as a third footbridge over LeConte Creek, which the hiker bids farewell to from this point on. Over the next three miles (5 km), the trail continues its steady climb towards the lodge, cutting switchbacks through sandstone chutes, offering both the trail's first scenic overlooks and a peaceful interlude with nature, as most of the hiker's companions have been left behind at the falls. Rhododendron, sand myrtle, and mountain laurel blanket the trail during this portion, offering springtime visitors a beautiful carpeting of purples, whites, and blends of pink.
Idrijski Log lies on the north end of the Črni Vrh Plateau, which then drops sharply to the Idrijca Valley. It is connected to the hamlet of Podroteja in Idrija by a gravel road with a series of switchbacks and to Godovič by a route known as the French Road (), which also leads to Črni Vrh and connects to Zadlog. The settlement lies on heavily karstified wooded land with many karst shafts and losing streams. The main elevations are Krog Hill (794 m), The Hill (Na Griču, 760 m) Grapar Peak (Graparjev vrh, 739 m), Pevc Hill (728 m), Big Peak (Veliki vrh, 721 m), Juniper Hill (Brinov grič, 738 m), Klobučar Hill (694 m), Skalovnik Hill (604 m).
Terrain on the hills is steep, and the roads to well pads, tanks, and other infrastructure make numerous switchbacks. Most of the field is hidden from view from the city because of the first steep range of hills. The oil field is one of several following the east-west trend of the Transverse Ranges at this point: to the west are the San Miguelito Oil Field and the Rincon Oil Field, and to the east, across the Santa Clara River valley, the large South Mountain Oil Field adjacent to Santa Paula and the smaller Saticoy Oil Field along the Santa Clara River east of Saticoy. To the north are the smaller Ojai and Santa Paula fields.
Dixon joined USL side Oklahoma City Energy on December 8, 2016. He made his OKC debut on March 25 in a 3-1 loss to Swope Park Rangers. In the Energy's next match, Dixon scored his first goal for OKC as they got a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. On May 17th Dixon scored twice as the Energy defeated Moreno Valley FC 5-1 in their second round match in the US Open Cup. Dixon would score again in OKC's next match, this time in league play, on May 20th in a 1-0 win over Orange County SC. On August 5th, Dixon scored a brace as the Energy won 2-0 against Real Monarchs, who were at the top of the league table.
Trail gradient are determined based on a site specific assessment of soils and geology, drainage patterns of the slope, surrounding vegetation types, position on the slope of a given trail segment (bottom, mid-slope, ridgeline), average precipitation, storm intensities, types of use, volume and intensity of use, and a host of other factors affecting the ability of the trail substrate to resist erosion and provide a navigable surface. Trails that ascend steep slopes may use switchbacks, but switchback design and construction is a specialized topic. Trails accessible to off-road wheelchairs, have a grade no more than one in ten. Paved trails that are accessible to all wheelchairs, have a grade of be no more than one in twelve, with periodic level pull-offs.
The railroad's operations began at Bellefonte, site of coal-hungry iron furnaces and the head of navigation on the Bald Eagle & Spring Creek canal. Using the tracks of the Tyrone and Lock Haven, it passed north through the narrow valley of Spring Creek to reach the Bald Eagle Valley at Milesburg. The Tyrone and Lock Haven was intended to stretch north up the valley to Lock Haven and south to Tyrone, but only a little grading had been accomplished north of Milesburg or south of Wingate, where the Bellefonte & Snow Shoe turned onto its own tracks. It followed the valley of Wallace Run through Gum Stump, and, at the forks of Wallace Run, climbed the side of a mountain by a series of switchbacks.
Smugglers' Notch namesake comes from the smugglers of the early nineteenth century, who used the thick forest on the mountain range, and the caves and caverns along the Long Trail to transport illegal or embargoed goods across the Canada–US border. The notch was most likely involved in bootlegging during the Prohibition-era of the 1920s, using the same caves as a cache for smuggled Canadian beer, wine, and spirits. Scenic Smugglers' Notch proper comprises Sterling Mountain/Spruce Peak ridgeline to the east and Mount Mansfield to the west. Extremely steep terrain drops down into the notch where Vermont Route 108 winds through switchbacks below, connecting Smuggler's Notch Resort with adjacent Stowe Mountain Resort a few miles to the south.
The High Lakes Trail #116 and East Canyon Trail #265, are located near the lake and offers hikers and backpackers more views of the mountain as well as lakes, creeks, and scenic forests. The High Lakes Trail crosses the lower end of the Takh Takh Lava Flow after descending on several switchbacks down to Adams Creek. The lake is a popular summer destination, and can be accessed via Primary Road 23, to Road 5601 from Trout Lake at the southern side of Mount Adams. From Randle or Packwood in the north, it can be accessed via Primary Road 23, to Road 5601; or alternately from Packwood south on Primary Road 21, east on Road 2160, southwest on Road 56, and south on Road 2329.
A series of switchbacks on SR 410 approaching Naches Peak SR 410 begins as a freeway at an interchange with SR 167 near Downtown Sumner. The highway travels southeast across suburban areas, crossing the Stuck River and passing a partial cloverleaf interchange with Linden Drive, also named Traffic Avenue. After a second partial cloverleaf interchange with Thompson Avenue, SR 410 goes under a railroad trestle owned by BNSF Railway and used by Amtrak's Cascades rail service, near the northern bank of the Puyallup River. After turning northeast, SR 410 encounters the western terminus of SR 162 by way of a diamond interchange. SR 162 travels north into Downtown Sumner as Valley Avenue and south over the Puyallup River towards Orting.
Le Bourg-d'Oisans is a commune in the Isère department in southeastern France. It is located in the Oisans region of the French Alps. Le Bourg-d'Oisans is located in the valley of the Romanche river, on the road from Grenoble to Briançon, and on the south side of the Col de la Croix de Fer. It is often on the route of the Tour de France, as the town sits at the base of the road to Alpe d'Huez and the legendary switchbacks to the top of the mountain (those wanting to test their skills against the professional cyclists' times can rent bicycles in Bourg d'Oisans and ride to the top where the tourist office offers a certificate of official completion that costs one Euro).
The Pacific Crest Trail reaches within of the summit; at , this is the highest point of the trail south of the Sierra Nevada. The summit has long been a favorite hiking excursion either from the Mount Islip Saddle near Little Jimmy Trail Camp, or the Vincent Gap Trail which leads up a moderate to strenuous set of switchbacks from Wrightwood. Mount Baden-Powell is also the high point along The Silver Moccasin Trail, a historic Boy Scout hiking trail, connects this summit to Mount Burnham (less than away), Throop Peak and Mount Hawkins. The Vincent Gap hike leads through a variety of forested areas consisting of Jeffrey Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Incense-cedar, and an ancient forest of Limber Pine some of which are more than 2,000 years old.
In 1919, Robert E. Strahorn, a free-lance railroad builder and promoter, formed the OC&E; by first acquiring an existing line, the Klamath Falls Municipal Railway, which ran between that city and Dairy. He planned to connect the OC&E; to the Southern Pacific Railroad at Klamath Falls, the Oregon Trunk Line at Bend, the Union Pacific at Crane, and the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway at Lakeview. After establishing these connections, he hoped to sell the OC&E; to one of the major railways. Using operating revenues provided by twelve different logging companies along the route, by 1923 the line had been extended from Dairy to milepost 39 at Sprague River where a 1.63% westbound grade with two temporary switchbacks was built over Bly Mountain until money was available to bore a tunnel.
In the double helix, the train turns to the right, making two complete circles while passing through two above-ground tunnels and several hills and drops. At the conclusion of the double helix the train goes down hill and crosses over the entrance to the helix, then makes a left hand turn through the double down drop, crosses under the lift hill, and enters what is known as the "four corners of death" by many roller coaster enthusiasts. The first corner is a 90° right turn, followed by a drop under the lift hill of Frightful Falls and the second corner, a banked 90° turn to the left. The train then travels next to the outdoor queue switchbacks before making a 180° turn to the right, forming the last two corners.
Honobia Topo Map in Le Flore County OK Oklahoma State Highway 144 connects Honobia with the rural communities of Fewell, Nolia, and Nashoba on the west—and with U.S. Highway 271 at Nashoba—and with the even more sparsely populated Pickens and Battiest areas on the east, and then with U.S. Highway 259. During recent years the Choctaw Nation has improved transportation in the Honobia area significantly by constructing a paved, all-weather road over the mountains from U.S. Highway 271 near Albion south over the steep mountain range to Honobia. Locals refer to this as the "Indian Highway." To accomplish its route the Indian Highway travels in a series of switchbacks up the northern side of the mountains and down again on the southern side, allowing for scenic views and vistas.
The club has a 9,400-seat soccer-specific stadium in Edinburg, Texas for the team. It was set to open after the Toros played three games at the soccer complex at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to start the 2016 USL Season.. The stadium was never completed for play in 2016. Construction of the H-E-B Park was completed during the first quarter of 2017 and the Toros played C.F. Monterrey from Mexico on March 22, 2017 to inaugurate their new stadium.. The Toros lost their exhibition match against Rayados 0–3.. The Toros won their first home game at H-E-B Park on April 12, 2017 against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Their current home record attendance is 7,820 which was set on April 29, 2017 against the Oklahoma City Energy.
On 19 February 2019, Wimbledon and Trotter mutually agreed to terminate his contract so he could sign for USL Championship side Orange County SC. Trotter made his Orange County SC debut, coming on as a substitute in the 53rd minutes, and set up an equaliser to help the side draw 2–2 against New Mexico United on 24 March 2019. After the match, website Orange and Black Soccer Cast praised his performance, saying that: "Trotter's presence was a positive for the team, and his assist in the equalizing goal was first class." Two weeks later on 7 April 2019, he set up the first goal of the game, in a 2–0 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Trotter became a first team regular for the side, playing in the midfield position.
The Old Tappan Road curves around the side of Turner Hollow, descending 100 feet (30 m) before ascending again after a fork where an older portion of the Turner Hollow Road descends on the left to Drury Hollow. The road ahead continues the gentle ascent until , where it climbs more sharply up a series of switchbacks, passing some of the balsam firs on the slope at higher elevations. The summit is marked by a U.S. Geological Survey benchmark with the elevation set in a rock at the west edge of the ridge where the road ends. The old relay station, a one-story cinderblock structure with no remaining roof and the three steel supports that can be seen from various viewpoints in the area near the mountain, is at the center of a large clearing.
A paved foot trail leads to Benson Footbridge, a 45-foot (14 m)-long footbridge that allows visitors to cross 105 feet (32 m) above the lower cascade. After a viewpoint of the upper falls, the trail continues to ascend to an elevation of ; it consists of eleven switchbacks which reach a forested talus slope above the falls. The trail then descends to an observation deck (elevation ) overlooking the falls' edge, providing visitors a bird's-eye view of the Columbia Gorge and also of "Little Multnomah", a small cascade slightly upstream from the "upper" falls, which is not visible from ground level. There are a number of trail junctions along the footpaths ascending to the falls' observation deck, which allow access to a trail loop to other nearby waterfalls.
At a half-mile (800 m) from the trailhead, the red-blazed Breakneck Bypass Trail, a route to that mountain's summit which avoids the steep climb followed by the Breakneck Ridge Trail up the west face, branches off to the northeast. Shortly after the junction an unofficial trail branches off to the northeast, allowing those who wish to follow it the opportunity to skip the impending ascent of Sugarloaf Mountain, sometimes called Sugarloaf North to distinguish it from Sugarloaf Hill, which also overlooks the Hudson roughly 10 miles (16 km) to the south near Garrison in Putnam County. After the fork the Wilkinson descends slightly, then begins to climb the steep south face of Sugarloaf. Tight switchbacks take the trail through narrow rock chutes in the nearly vertical slope.
Semifinal episodes now required all four players to climb the Crag. A new section was added, "The Mad Mesas", which was a path of boulders that the contestant needed to run over to reach the second player at the base of the Switchbacks. Their final actuator would open up a trapdoor in Avalanche Peak that lead them to a spiraling "Swirling Vortex" slide that lead them behind the main facade of the Crag and to the third player, who had to navigate the "Crag Caverns". Once they had maneuvered this maze, they needed to traverse the entire Glacial Gorge around the entire mountain and reach the base of the mountain, which would finally open the Ice Portal and allow the fourth player to climb the Vertical Freeze to victory.
In Aggro Bowls, a control panel was now placed at the start of the Crag Caverns where the third player from each team could control additional snow and hail that could challenge their respective opponents climbing the Mesas and Switchbacks. Once the second player made the exchange with the third, he or she could take over control and release "Arctic Steam" in the Crag Caverns and drop an avalanche on the fourth players climbing the Vertical Freeze. For each victory, teams receive a white "piece of the Aggro Crag". The champion of the tournament receives all three including a considerably larger third piece, which can be put together to form a miniature Aggro Crag as a trophy along with the grand prize of a trip on the Nickelodeon Family Cruise.
On 29 July 2016, Chaplow signed with United Soccer League side Orange County Blues. Two days after signing for the club, Chaplow made his Orange County Blues debut, coming on as a second-half substitute, in a 2–0 win over LA Galaxy II. Chaplow scored his first goal for the club in the next game on 4 August 2016, in a 2–1 win over Tulsa Roughnecks. Weeks later, on 21 August 2016, he scored his second goal for the club, in a 2–0 win over LA Galaxy II. After serving a two match suspension, Chaplow returned to the first team and then on 25 September 2016 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks, he set up two goals, in a 4–0 win. In the remainder of the season, Chaplow went on to make ten appearances.
The most popular starting point for the direct ascent of Stob Choire Claurigh is Corriechoille farm (grid reference ) at the end of the minor road from Spean Bridge. The route follows the Lairig Leacach track through a short section of the Leanachan Forest, the track is left immediately after the forest and steep slopes are climbed on the right hand side to reach the north east ridge. The ridge is followed over Stob Coire Gaibhre and along the rim of Coire na Ceannain which gives airy views down to its circular lochan, to reach the summit which is marked by a pile of quartzite boulders. There is a fine view from the top, especially to the SW where there is a fine outlook of the switchbacks and tops of the Grey Corries ridge backed by Aonach Beag and Ben Nevis.
Commercial Appeal : Memphis News, Business, Homes, Jobs, Cars, & Information A small memorial erected by the Jianshui County Police Department in memory of 10 people who perished in a bus plunge off Yunnan Provincial Highway 214, as it descends toward the Red River Fault in a series of switchbacks In Birmingham, Alabama, roadside memorials have been removed from Interstate highways. Some people view unauthorized street memorials as illegal and think they constitute the taking of public property for private purposes, and are also a distraction and therefore dangerous to the motoring public. Others think they serve as a sort of public service announcement that reminds drivers to be careful and drive safely, and are no more distracting than any other roadside advertisement. For anyone but those close to the death, they may do little but clutter the landscape.
The Spruceton Trail begins its toughest section next with a steady climb to the east. This used to be made more difficult by severe erosion and rutting of the trail, but in the early 2000s DEC did extensive trail work that leveled many turns into gentler switchbacks, making it much more accessible for horses. In the next it will climb to a spring where a barrel and a hitching post has been installed (again for the benefit of horses) and the site of the John Robb Lean-to, a popular log shelter that burned from causes still unknown in late 2005. Camping is forbidden here until the new lean-to is built (note - a new lean-to has been constructed as of Dec 2009 with a fireplace, extensive views into the Spruceton valley, and additional designated camping spots).
Because the northern portions of the Greenway are converted railroad track bed, it is relatively smooth, straight, and level. Portions of the trail near to, and south of, Letchworth State Park are very hilly and strenuous. Where the trail crosses highways and waterways, many of the structures used to support the previous railway are either reused, or new prefabricated bridges have been placed on old bridge abutments. Roads that cross the Greenway fall in two general categories: Roads constructed while the railway or Greenway was in operation, which typically have the road on an even grade with the Greenway or (for larger highways) a bridge where one crosses the other; and roads constructed while the railway was abandoned, whose intersections may be difficult to cross because of differences in elevation between the roadway and the Greenway, sometimes accomplished via steep inclines or switchbacks.
Adult leaders wear the basic Scout field uniform. Female leaders of dens below Webelos level have the option of the classic female Cub Scouter uniform with blue web belt. Leaders that wear the tan uniform shirt wear blue shoulder loops on the epaulets, Centennial or Switchbacks pants or shorts, and the Scout web or leather belt. If a neckerchief is worn, male leaders wear the Cub Scout leader neckerchief (if he is a Tiger Cub leader or Cub Scout den leader or assistant den leader), Webelos leader neckerchief (if he is a Webelos den leader or assistant den leader), International adult neckerchief, National Eagle Scout Association neckerchief (if he earned the Eagle Scout rank as a youth), Wood Badge neckerchief, or Wood Badge Tartan neckerchief (if he has completed Wood Badge training), with the appropriate neckerchief slide or woggle.
This takes place when the families must climb a mountain to taste "My Family's Got Guts" victory and win the competition. Preliminary episodes require two players to climb the Crag - one climbing up their respective side of the mountain through the "Ice-Surfin' Switchbacks", a set of wobbly wedges that players needed to maneuver around, climb over the "Skeleton Stalagmites", and activate three actuators including one at the end of this first leg, "Avalanche Peak" with a "frozen lava storm" raining down on contestants. This in turns opens the Ice Portal at the base of the Crag, where the second player awaits. They must then cross some stepping stones across "The Glacial Gorge" and climb two vertical rock climbing walls dubbed "The Vertical Freeze", to reach the Crystal Peak and hit their final actuator to finalize the results.
The entrance to Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park in 2005 The club plays at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park, known as only Isotopes Park in 2019 and nicknamed The Lab, a baseball stadium that is primarily home to the Albuquerque Isotopes of the Pacific Coast League. New Mexico United will play at the facility until a soccer-specific stadium is built. The Isotopes will remain the primary tenant and the USL team will schedule its home games during away games for the Isotopes. The stadium seats 13,500 spectators for baseball games. In 2020 New Mexico United was not able to play home games at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park due to New Mexico’s Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s public health order for COVID-19. Their “home games” were played at Widner Field in Colorado Springs, home of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
21 turns in Guizhou, China Pass of the Cattle (Bealach na Bà in Gaelic) in Scotland, UK, showing a hairpin bend. Some of the 48 hairpin turns near the top of the northern ramp of the Stelvio Pass in Italy Hairpin turn on Mont Ventoux in France Hairpins on a track to the south of Mont Valier, Pyrenees A hairpin turn (also hairpin bend, hairpin corner, etc.), named for its resemblance to a hairpin/bobby pin, is a bend in a road with a very acute inner angle, making it necessary for an oncoming vehicle to turn about 180° to continue on the road. Such turns in ramps and trails may be called switchbacks in American English, by analogy with switchback railways. In British English "switchback" is more likely to refer to a heavily undulating road—a use extended from the rollercoaster and the other type of switchback railway.
Switchbacked incline The term "switchback gravity railroad" is sometimes applied to gravity railroads that used special self-acting (momentum-driven) Y-shaped switches known as switchbacks to automatically reverse a car's direction at certain points as it descends; this essentially folds the incline across the slope in a characteristic "zig-zag" shape. (See diagram: car starts from point A, coasts through switch at B, and comes to a stop at C. Car then rolls through the switch again and proceeds to the switch at D, where the process is repeated.) A separate track was typically used to haul the empty cars back to the top. The original implementation of this type of system is credited to the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, which hauled coal and passengers from 1827 until 1933. This was very popular with tourists, and led to the development of the roller coaster.
Athermalization in optics is the process of achieving optothermal stability and ensuring that optical properties do not change with variations in temperature. In a perfect world, athermalization could be achieved by making the optics and metering (mounting) structure out of the same material. This is nearly impossible in practice, as materials that are ideal for use in optics are often brittle, expensive, or both, and are thus not generally feasible for use in a metering structure. For this reason, athermalization is often achieved by using switchbacks, where a compensating element (generally of higher CTE than the mounting structure material to minimize the mass of material needed) is mounted in such a way so that as it expands, it expands in the opposite direction of the mounting structure's expansion, thereby negating it and holding the lens or optical element at a fixed position over a given temperature range.
Classic carved trail sign Alum Rock Park, in the Alum Rock district of San Jose, California, is California's oldest municipal park, established in 1872 but serving as public land since the pueblo was established in 1777. Located in a valley in the Diablo Range foothills on the east side of San Jose, the 720 acre (2.9 km2) park offers 13 miles (21 km) of trails, varying from fairly level along Penitencia Creek to sharp switchbacks climbing to the ridges to the South Rim Trail and the North Rim Trail. The narrow floor of the valley includes a visitor center, a small museum/animal rehab facility, picnic areas, playgrounds, lawns, sand volleyball pits, mineral springs, lush plant life, woodlands, creek play opportunities, and occasional group camping. The ridge trails offer views of Santa Clara Valley and of the valley in which the park is located.
Investor Charles W. Scofield of New York, who was already in control of two other narrow gauge mining roads - the Bingham Canyon and Camp Floyd Rail Road since 1873 and the Wasatch and Jordan Valley Railroad since 1875 - acquired the U&PV; in October 1878.Clarence A. Reeder, Jr., The History of Utah's Railroads, 1869-1883 (1970 doctoral dissertation), published 1981 by Arno Press, The U&PV; began at a mine in the Pleasant Valley south of Scofield,Rand McNally & Company, Denver and Rio Grande Railway System, 1886 heading north along the present Pleasant Valley Subdivision to the Scofield Reservoir. The old grade has been flooded until it leaves the lake to the north, rising to an elevation of above sea level before descending, via a pair of switchbacks, to Starvation Creek. The valley of that creek took the railroad to the Spanish Fork Canyon, and the later D&RGW;, at Tucker.
Lima - Morococha - Abra Anticona (Ticlio) - La Oroya - Huancayo passenger line The Central Railway, Ferrocarril Central del Perú (FCC), incorporates the first railway in Peru opened on May 17, 1851 linking the Pacific port of Callao and the capital Lima ( of standard gauge). This was expanded to form the Callao, Lima & Oroya Railway, opened to Chicla by 1878, the original contractor being Henry Meiggs and engineer being Ernest Malinowski assisted by Edward Jan Habich. The line reached La Oroya by 1893 and Huancayo () in 1908. It is the second highest railway in the world (following opening of the Qingzang railway in Tibet), with the Galera summit tunnel under Mount Meiggs at and Galera station at above sea level, requiring constructional feats including many switchbacks and steel bridges. Since 1999 it has been operated as the Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCCA) (with its associated maintenance company Ferrovias Central Andina (FVCA)) by the Pittsburgh-registered Railroad Development Corporation.
This area was the center of the "town of Smoke Hole" proper, site of an official post office for a time. From here a steep Forest Service road switchbacks 5.4 miles up to the former site of the North Fork Mountain Lookout Tower. Grant County Route 28/11 also proceeds from this intersection and traverses the northern half of the Canyon well above the river level for about where it exits the Canyon at WV Route 55/28. (NB: Both Grant County Route 28/11 and Pendleton County Route 2 are indicated on maps as "Smoke Hole Road". The former was previously called FR 74.) Live bluegrass music and dancing at Shreves Store From the Shreve's Store intersection, CR 2 continues north another two miles along the river (past Old Mines Cave Rocks, mile 4.1 and Old Mines Cave, mile 5.8) to the abandoned town of Ketterman (mile 6.3) — also site of an erstwhile post office — and then a final mile to Big Bend Campground (mile 7.3) where the motorable roadway ends.
Ithaca became a transshipping point for salt from curing beds near Salina, New York to buyers south and east. This prompted construction in 1810 of the Owego Turnpike. When the War of 1812 cut off access to Nova Scotia gypsum, used for fertilizer, Ithaca became the center of trade in Cayuga gypsum. The Cayuga Steamboat Company was organized in 1819 and in 1820 launched the first steamboat on Cayuga Lake, the Enterprise. In 1821, the village was incorporated at the same time the Town of Ithaca was organized and separated from the parent Town of Ulysses. In 1834, the Ithaca and Owego Railroad's first horse-drawn train began service, connecting traffic on the east–west Erie Canal (completed in 1825) with the Susquehanna River to the south to expand the trade network. With the depression of 1837, the railroad was re- organized as the Cayuga & Susquehanna. It was re-engineered with switchbacks in the late 1840s; in the late 20th century a short section of this route in the city and town of Ithaca was used for the South Hill Recreation Way.
The agreement with the OSSAA would eventually expand to include coverage of the Class 5A and 6A boys' and girls' high school basketball championship games beginning in 2017. On March 8, 2016, the station reached an agreement with OKC Energy FC to become the exclusive broadcast home of the United Soccer League club's home matches at Taft Stadium, starting with the March 26 regular season opener against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC; all games were produced by event streaming provider VISTA Worldlink. The contract ended after the Energy's 2018 season, with the team's matches being relegated mainly to the ESPN+ streaming service thereafter. On November 8 of that year, Griffin reached an agreement to carry games from the Oklahoma City Blue (the Thunder's NBA Development League affiliate) starting with the 2016–17 season, with an initial slate of 23 of the team's home games (which are held at the Cox Convention Center with former KWTV sports/news anchor Ed Murray doing play-by-play); the first Blue game to be telecast on the station was the November 11 home opener against the Maine Red Claws.
Following the war, growing power requirements led to a fast-tracking of the project, which was the largest at the time and one of the most staggering ever undertaken because of the terrain and spectacular setting of the project. Materials for the diversion dams in the Bridge River and all equipment for the powerhouse to be built at Lajoie, near Gold Bridge, had to be trucked over the climb and dozens of switchbacks of the tortuous Mission Mountain Road, which was also shared with industrial and passenger traffic to and from the busy mine towns. The only access to the railhead for that road, at Shalalth, was via the rail line itself from Lillooet and, to get there, via the old pre-Trans-Canada "Cariboo Highway" from Hope to Lytton that had not been upgraded much since it was built in the 1920s. The first generator was installed at what would become Bridge River Powerhouse No. 1 in 1948, with three more generators added by 1954, giving the plant a total output of 180,000 kilowatts - easily the largest in the province at that time.
