There also was a room collaged with fabric swatches and sketches referencing the decorator Nancy Lancaster and Virginia Woolf's novel of gender-bending and time travel, "Orlando," all in homage to the designer Christopher Bailey's inspiration for his collection, shown just upstairs in rooms lined with chintz-covered benches: the first see-now/shop-now, combined men's-and-women's line in Burberry history.

If you begin at the top floor showroom and work downward, you can see the entire operation unfold before you, from the design team's desks, some fitted with a little cabinet stuffed with scraps of deliciously colored swatches of silks, jacquards, wools, jerseys and cottons, and continuing down through the financial department, the sales department, the production and distribution departments and the archives.

It also offers a way for customers to physically inspect merchandise they may not feel comfortable buying online — like clothes that require trying on for fit, makeup they want to test or — in the case of Wayfair's furniture — a way to touch and feel the fabrics, closely inspect the build quality and visualize items alongside other design materials like fabric swatches or paint strips, for example.

PARIS — One day in July, not long after Clare Waight Keller had begun work as the first female artistic director of Givenchy — succeeding its longtime designer, Riccardo Tisci, and helping further reset the gender imbalance that has long existed at the top of famous French fashion brands — she was sitting at a long table in the vast white design studio of the brand's headquarters on Avenue George V. She was framed by 23 mood boards propped up against the walls — one for ruffles, one for black dresses, one for blouses, her pale face shadowed by long brown hair, quietly and efficiently turning the pages of a book of fabric swatches — as assistants hovered silently around her.
