Merle is an original character in the television series and shares no counterpart in the comic books. He is also a main character in the 2013 video game The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, which focuses on him and Daryl during the early days of the zombie apocalypse. Rooker made guest appearances as Merle in the series' first and second seasons, before he was upgraded to a series regular for the third season, where he lost a significant amount of weight in preparation for the role. Rooker was among the cast members who were awarded the Satellite Award for Best Cast – Television Series in 2012.

The intense pain of a broken heart is believed to be part of the survival instinct. The "social-attachment system" uses the "pain system" to encourage humans to maintain their close social relationships by causing pain when those relationships are lost. Psychologists Geoff MacDonald of the University of Queensland and Mark Leary of Wake Forest University proposed in 2005 the evolution of common mechanisms for both physical and emotional pain responses and argue that such expressions are "more than just a metaphor". His next series Botanical Aesthetics was aroused by an incidental discovery of a bag of seeds. The seeds were originally brought from Taiwan to be planted in the U.S., but had been neglected by the artist for almost two years; nevertheless, Yang planted them anyway and was astounded when the plantations sprouted from earth. Thus, Botanical Aesthetics deems to celebrate the triumph of human life through the metaphor of botanic vitality, insinuating a basic survival instinct that is genetically encoded in all living organisms.

During the investigation, it transpires that it was Braxton himself who planted a bomb on the ship and together with the crew of the Relativity, Captain Janeway manages to apprehend Braxton before he plants the device. Seven encounters three former Borg with which she previously formed a mini-collective after their scout vessel crashed on a planet. She forced this collective on them because they were becoming individuals, which has caused the trio to keep a mental connection even after their eventual disconnection from the rest of the Borg. During the course of "Survival Instinct", the link is terminated, causing each of the former Borg to be predicted to die within a month.

Saw is a horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell and distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment and Twisted Pictures. The films take place in a fictional universe that revolves around a serial killer, dubbed The Jigsaw Killer, who captures victims who he believes do not appreciate their life and puts them into traps to test their survival instinct. While starting as a film series, Saw has evolved to encompass numerous media forms including video games and comics as well as mazes and a roller coaster. According to The New York Times in October 2009, including international sales and revenue from DVDs, television and merchandise, the Saw series has taken in more than $1 billion, making it one of the highest-grossing horror franchises in history.

As Warden Leo Glynn and Father Ray Mukada arrive, she tells Glynn that Lopresti comes into her cell every night and has sex with her (which Lopresti denies) and tells Mukada that the father of her child is Satan in the form of a man. Mukada asks which man to which she gives him a hint "neither rain nor snow". Mukada recognizes this as a part of the motto for the U.S. Postal Service and suspects Aryan leader Vernon Schillinger is the father because he is in charge of the mail service in Oz but Schillinger denies it. As she is led to the gallows, however, her survival instinct kicks in, and she violently resists her guards, begging not to be hanged.

John was soon given the name "The Jigsaw Killer" (or "Jigsaw"), because he removed a puzzle-piece-shaped chunk of flesh from those who did not escape his traps. John stated that this name was given to him by the media, and that the cut piece of flesh was meant to represent that these victims were each missing something—what he called the "survival instinct".

As his victims increase, the media dubs him The Jigsaw Killer, or simply Jigsaw, because of the jigsaw puzzle-shaped piece of flesh that he removes from unsuccessful subjects, which he explains in Saw II is meant to symbolize that the subject "was missing a vital piece of the human puzzle: the survival instinct". Throughout the first film, his identity remains uncertain; the unstable ex-cop David Tapp suspects that he may be Lawrence and near the end of the film, Lawrence and Adam Stanheight are led to believe it is the hospital orderly Zep Hindle. Only at the end of the film is it revealed that the Jigsaw Killer is a terminal cancer patient of Lawrence's named John Kramer, who spent the entire time posing as a corpse on the floor of the bathroom Adam and Lawrence were trapped in. Much of John's backstory was revealed in Saw II. He had gone in for a routine medical examination when he learned from Lawrence that he was dying of colon cancer with an inoperable brain tumor.
