Restless Development was founded as Students Partnership Worldwide in 1985 by Jim Cogan, the Deputy Head of Westminster School. It was originally a gap year programme for school leavers from Westminster School to work as supply teachers in India or Zimbabwe. In 1992 SPW started recruiting local volunteers to make programmes more sustainable. This proved to be extremely effective and became a hallmark of SPW's work.

Select Education was founded in 1993 as a specialist provider of supply teachers to schools, opening offices in Edgware, Birmingham, Bristol, Leicester and Manchester a year later. In 1995 it began operating at a profit, and continued to expand over the following years with more offices opening in the UK. The company quickly became the market leader. During this expansion period, Select launched several divisions and subsidiaries at home and abroad. This culminated in launching the Verb Group of companies in 2007, with six members.

In September 2002 the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) awarded the school specialist school status as a Technology College. The college was also been awarded a second specialism, and also had Training School Status. In 2008 it was reported that the school was paying sixth form students to teach younger pupils at the school, instead of employing qualified supply teachers whose quality of teaching the school had sometimes felt to be lacking. Twenty-four students were being paid £5 for fifty minutes of teaching a subject, which they were studying at A-level.

In 1983, all of the full-time teaching-staff resigned, but for separate reasons (however, continuity was ensured by the auxiliary teaching- staff, supply teachers and other staff, board of governors, PTA, etc.). While recruiting new teachers, the school decided to employ a headmaster. Michael W. G. Roberts, who had been deputy head of a school in Newcastle, England moved to Amsterdam and joined the school in 1983 as Headmaster and class teacher of the oldest children, a mixed group from 8 to 11 years of age. In January 1985 the Amsterdam Gemeente Amsterdam (city council) allowed the school to take over the Jan van Eijckstraat 21 site (in Amsterdam Nieuw-Zuid) which had been used as a temporary residence for schools undergoing major renovation etc.

The children from sixth to ninth grade are accommodated with the boarding school Holy Jean Bosco, located in the building "Beaumanoir". The pupils need to be prepared for more than ten years for the official examination of Brevet des collèges which is the first French diploma, obtained after 4 years of junior high school in general and technical areas. The children have to do the "Hattemer course" (mail-given / correspondence course) and the courses are given by the brothers of Riaumont as well as by external supply teachers. The classes are often small between five and about fifteen pupils and they are all the "boys of Riaumont" but the courses of catechism are also open to other children of different surroundings.
