The majority of the site is made up of species-rich grassland (subcommunity MG5c), which comprises three dominant species of grass and several other grass species at lower abundances. The dominant species are Red Fescue (Festuca rubra), Common Bent (Agrostis capillaris) and Yorkshire Fog (Holcus lanatus). The less abundant species of grass include, Crested Dog’s-tail (Cynosurus cristatus), Heath-grass (Danthonia decumbens) and Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata). The subcommunity also has many broad-leaved herbs including Common Knapweed (Centaurea nigra), Tormentil (Potentilla erecta), Devils-bit scabious (Succisa pratensis) and Betony (Stachys officinalis).

This is characteristically a pioneer weed community. Except for the Polygonum - Ranunculus subcommunity, which is mainly confined to the south and east, it is found throughout Britain, in a variety of situations, such as arable land, gardens, recreational grasslands, waysides and gateways, and on soil heaps on construction sites.

In particular it is considered the MG5 community due to the species present. MG5 is widespread in many lowland areas in England, Wales and Scotland as well as the Midlands and Yorkshire. Briarcroft Pasture is predominantly subcommunity MG5c (Danthonia decumbens); however, this forms a mosaic with community MG9, which is associated with poorly drained permanent pastures.

Glacial tills and sands are the prominent geological features resulting in a relatively base-poor soil, characteristic of glacial drift geology. The soils of MG5c (Danthonia decumbens) subcommunity are typically acidic. Located in North East England, Briarcroft Pasture experience a climate that differs from the UK average. The North East receives on average 370 mm less rainfall than the UK over a year.

This community is widely distributed in suitable habitats in the southern lowlands of Britain, mainly in south-east England. It is found on sunny ledges and in crevices on limestone quarry rock faces and cliffs and mortared walls; the Daucus carota subcommunity, which is restricted to coastal locations, is found as far west as south Wales. It is essentially the same as the Parietarietum judaicae assemblage recognised in other parts of Europe.

Red Fescue is one of the dominant species in subcommunity MG5c and is found at Briarcroft Pasture. Briarcrift Pasture, located west of Stockton-on-Tees and close to Whinney Hill, County Durham, is a small site 1.8 hectares (4.4 acres). Topographically the site is level and has an altitude of approximately 50 m and is adjacent to a small stream. The underlying geology of Whitton Bridge Pasture is responsible for shaping the species-rich community found on the surface.

Like other forms of jargon, fanspeak serves as a means of inclusion and exclusion within the fannish community. In the 1970s, the use of traditional fanspeak separated the fanzine and convention-attending subcommunity (sometimes distinguished as trufen or "true fans") from fans of science fiction movies and television shows (mediafen). Undoubtedly some were participants or at the least had knowledge of the Wangara trade networks as the Muslim slave communities in the Americas were already familiar with each other's existence. This created a subcommunity of slaves that actively sought each other out through the practices of the "Cursed Sect of Mohamet". Though still divided among ethnic & linguistic lines they ultimately united through faith. Said to have little trouble finding ways to communicate and would defiantly practice in secret or convene openly for prayer depending on their overseer.

After his term as Provincial Superior, Intengan represented the CBCP at the International Consultation on New Age, held at the Vatican City from 14 to 16 June 2004 under the joint auspices of the Pontifical Councils on inter-religious dialogue, culture, and promoting Christian unity and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. During the Consultation Intengan presented one of his major papers, specifically an evaluation of the techniques used by New Age practitioners from a theological and pastoral outlook. After a sabbatical in the USA and Spain during the school year 2004–2005, Intengan returned to the Loyola House of Studies. He taught moral theology at Loyola School of Theology and served as Vice-Superior of the Theologians’ Subcommunity of the Loyola House of Studies.

In a 2009 article in the peer-reviewed academic journal, Sociological Forum, Piotr Konieczny called The Signpost an example of a subcommunity within the larger Wikipedia community. In the social-movements journal Interface that year, Konieczny cited The Signpost as part of the "complexity and richness of those organizations" in which individuals can volunteer their time on the website. Researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory and Dartmouth College relied on Signpost archives to track Wikipedia editing outages, presenting their findings at the 2011 IEEEIWIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence. In her 2013 study of Wikipedia and its reputation in higher education in the journal New Review of Academic Librarianship, Gemma Bayliss reviewed the Signpost Twitter feed to confirm the timeliness of her research.

The misidentification of Tripathi led to questions in the media about whether the so-called "crowd- sourced investigations" should be prevented in future, citing the harm caused to people such as the relatives of Tripathi, as well as other wrongly- identified suspects who now feared for their safety. Some argued that they are unstoppable because of the nature of the Internet, with the only hope being that awareness of the possible effects of errors such as this would lead to future caution. Reddit issued a public apology for allowing its users to form a subcommunity called Find Boston Bombers, wherein they openly speculated upon suspects. Posting on Facebook, Tripathi's family described the tremendous amount of attention the misidentification had caused as painful, but they sought to use the negative publicity of the case to assist in their search by raising awareness.
