The new neighbourhood was planned by Ferdinand Meldahl and has also been referred to as "Meldahl's Nine Streets". Apart from the buildings which face Kongens Nytorv, which include the Royal Danish Theatre and Charlottenborg Palace, the area is characterized by homogeneous Historicist architecture consisting of perimeter blocks with richly decorated house fronts.

Cordón is home to the National Library, the University of the Republic (the Faculty of Law), the Institute Alfredo Vázquez Acavedo, all three of which are National Heritage Sites, the Ministry of Health, the Banco de Prevision Social (the Social Security Service) and many other building of architectural interest. Its most important streets apart from 18 de Julio Avenue, are the Constituyente, Uruguay Avenue, Galicia Str., Miguelete Str., Juan D. Jackson which becomes Fernandez Crespo Avenue south of 18 de Julio and others.

The suburb was previously an industrial one; but in recent years new housing estates have been developed greatly increasing the residential population. The major estate is Edenbrooke, while the newest is Verandah. The major road through the suburb is Seventeen Mile Rocks Road which links the suburb to Jindalee and the Western Freeway at the western end and Oxley at the eastern end The Western drive-in movie theatre was on the south- eastern corner of Seventeen Mile Rocks Road and Fremont Street (). It extended almost through to Argyle and Molesworth Streets (apart from a row of houses facing each of those streets).

In 1983 he played the part of Kidder in Willy Russell's five part Channel 4 drama One Summer, also starring David Morrissey. In the later 1980s Hazeldine had major roles in two BBC comedy dramas: as haulage firm owner Picard in Truckers (1987) and as Bernie in Streets Apart (1988–1989). In 1999, he played Austin Danforth in the ITV drama The Last Train and in 2001 he appeared as Ivan Braithwaite in Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years. Hazeldine also appeared in Granada Television's production of "The Musgrave Ritual", as part of ITV's The Return of Sherlock Holmes series, as Richard Brunton, alongside Jeremy Brett, as well as the Miss Marple story "The Murder at the Vicarage", as Lawrence Redding, alongside Joan Hickson, Paul Eddington and Cheryl Campbell.
