As a young boy he hawked the Daily Picayune newspaper, helping police catch petty thieves, and acting as a “stool pigeon” for the police.

Harry Maione and Frank Abbandando were the first members of the Brooklyn "Combination" to be put on trial for murder. Heiden, described by William Shirer as "a former police stool-pigeon of unsavory reputation", joined the SS in 1925 and was an early advocate of separating the unit from the SA, its parent organization. On 1 March 1927, Joseph Berchtold transferred leadership of the SS to Heiden, who was his acting deputy. Berchtold had become disillusioned by the SA's authority over the SS. As head of the SS, Heiden also found it difficult to function under the larger and more powerful SA. Under Heiden's leadership a stricter code of discipline was enforced than would have been tolerated in the SA ranks. Heiden further demanded that the men under his command were not to be involved in party matters which were none of their concern.

When the film was released, reviews were somewhat mixed. Bosley Crowther wrote, > It looks very much as though someone is trying to out-bulldoze Mickey > Spillane in Twentieth Century-Fox's Pickup on South Street, ... this highly > embroidered presentation of a slice of life in the New York underworld not > only returns Richard Widmark to a savage, arrogant role, but also uses Jean > Peters blandly as an all-comers' human punching-bag. Captain Burton C. Mossman Burt Alvord at Yuma Territorial Prison in 1904 At the turn of the century, Arizona was still the wild place it had been for years previously, especially near the border with Mexico. Armed robbery and rustling was so widespread that in March 1901 the territorial governor, Oakes Murphy, authorized the re-establishment of the Arizona Rangers. Burton C. Mossman was the first captain of the unit and his final accomplishment before resigning was tricking Augustine Chacon into crossing the border, where he could be apprehended legally. To do this, Mossman came up with an idea that involved posing as an outlaw and recruiting the train robber Burt Alvord, who was a friend of Chacon, to use him as a stool pigeon.

Huber made his film debut in Central Park in late 1932, followed quickly by a bit part in 20,000 Years in Sing Sing. He appeared in nearly 100 films in the 1930s and 1940s. An early noteworthy role was as the stool-pigeon Nunnheim in The Thin Man (1934). He played many roles requiring him to assume different accents, like Ito Nakamura, a Japanese American in the 1942 film Little Tokyo, U.S.A.. Among his many roles were appearances as a police officer in various Charlie Chan films, including an American in Charlie Chan on Broadway (1937), a French officer in Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo (1937) and Charlie Chan in City in Darkness (1939), and a Brazilian in Charlie Chan in Rio (1941).

Following his college career, he became an apprentice at 20th Century Fox in 1934 as an assistant director under producer Sol Wurtzel, where he worked until 1942. He spent time as a naval officer during World War II before joining Universal-International as an assistant director. He later became a producer, with his first film as producer being Johnny Stool Pigeon in 1949. He produced a wide range of films including Man Without a Star, directed by King Vidor and starring Kirk Douglas, To Hell and Back (1955) and The Benny Goodman Story (1956). In 1950, he produced Winchester '73 starring James Stewart and directed by Anthony Mann and produced other films involving them both including Bend of the River (1952), Thunder Bay (1953), The Glenn Miller Story (1954) and The Far Country (1955).

In the Hong Kong translated version of A Bug's Life (), Tse did the voice dubbing for the character Flik. He also lent his voice to the Chinese animation film Lotus Lantern (1999). Tse's performance in Bodyguards and Assassins (2009), earned him an Asian Film Award at the 4th Asian Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor, and in 2011, Tse received a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor at the 30th Hong Kong Film Awards for The Stool Pigeon (2010), beating fellow actors Chow Yun-fat, Jacky Cheung, Tony Leung Ka-fai, and Nick Cheung. Tse had a love for martial arts at a young age, but he formally learned martial arts for the screen from stunt leader Jackie Chan and Chung Chi Li for films such as, Gen- X-Cops and Invisible Target.

Amazing Spider-Man #23 (April 1965) When another masked crime lord called the Crime Master arises, working in collusion with the Green Goblin, Foswell again begins wearing a mask - an eyepatched face that he uses as the alter ego Patch. Acting as a stool-pigeon, he tips off the police to planned crimes while getting scoops.Amazing Spider-Man #26-27 (July–August 1965) Hoping to learn how his co-worker Peter Parker (Spider-Man's alter ego) always gets great photos of Spider-Man, Foswell follows him, and witnesses a (faked) conversation between Parker and Spider-Man indicating they've been conspiring to ensure that Parker is always present when Spider-Man goes into action. Parker and Foswell occasionally work together, with Peter tipping off Foswell as Spider-Man before a major bust and then taking pictures to go with Foswell's stories.

The Stool Pigeon criticised the nostalgic quality of the NSRO's music commenting that "it's frequently a fine and lovely thing. But in some ways it can't help feeling like a retreat… Certainly there are moments of beauty, but ultimately it's like stepping back into an alternate, pre-war England where rock'n’roll – not to mention mass industrialisation and immigration – never happened. Which is fine for a night, but I wouldn't want to stay." Notorious underground music commentator Everett True was considerably more scornful in his Hugs And Kisses blog (reprinted in The Village Voice), castigating the band for "po-faced snobbery" and "baroque warbling" and comparing them unfavourably to their more post-rock inclined support act: “Crayola Lectern tick the same high musicality boxes as the band that followed, sure: but possess one crucial factor that the North Sea Radio Malarkey just don’t, just don’t get.

Kate Richards O'Hare, imprisoned in 1917 for five years under the Espionage Act of 1917, published a firsthand account of incarcerated women In Prison complete with frightening accounts of lesbian sexual abuse among inmates. So wrote O'Hare: "...A thorough education in sex perversions is part of the educational system of most prisons, and for the most part the underkeepers [sic] and the stool pigeons are very efficient teachers..." O'Hare then recounted a systematic induction of women into a cycle of forced prostitution to which authorities turned a blind eye: "...there seems to be considerable ground for the commonly accepted belief of the prison inmates that much of its graft and profits may percolate upward to the under officials...the...stool pigeon...handled the vices so rampant in the prison...she, in fact, held the power of life and death over us, by being able to secure endless punishments in the blind, she could and did compel indulgence in this vice in order that its profits might be secured".

The album charted briefly, and subsequently Coati Mundi's early Latin rap "Me No Pop I", though not originally on the album, became a Top 40 UK hit single. It was the band's first hit. Their breakthrough came with 1982's Tropical Gangsters, which hit #3 in the UK and spun off three Top 10 hits with "Stool Pigeon", "Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy" and "I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby." "Dear Addy" also made the Top 40. In the US the album was retitled Wise Guy and reached #145, and "I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby" flirted with the R&B; charts. Darnell subsequently produced a 1983 spin-off album for the Coconuts with Cheryl Poirier on lead vocals. Coati Mundi also released his solo LP The Former 12 Year Old Genius before the fourth Kid Creole and the Coconuts album in 1983; Doppelganger was a relative commercial disappointment, despite the single "There's Something Wrong in Paradise" reaching the UK Top 40. The group performed the song "My Male Curiosity" with The Coconuts, choreographed by Adriana Kaegi With dance moves that showed off their rebellious hairy armpits, for the 1984 movie, and soundtrack Album, Against All Odds.

Keung received praises for his satirical portrayal of LegCo member Leung Kwok-hung in ATV's political parody program, Hong Kong Gossip. However, since the audience viewership for ATV has been low, most local audiences only began noticing him after he left ATV in 2010 and began appearing in high-profile films such as Beast Stalker (2008), The Stool Pigeon (2010) and Life Without Principle (2011), for which he was nominated for the Chinese Film Media Awards for Best Supporting Actor. In recent years, Keung has become one of Hong Kong's most prolific film actors, appearing in over 40 films between 2013 and 2018, playing major supporting roles in many high-profile films such as Firestorm, Unbeatable, Little Big Master, Two Thumbs Up and Trivisa, for which he was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award for Best Actor. In 2017, Keung won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 1st Profima International Film Fest & Awards in Malaysia for his performance in the action film Shock Wave, winning his first acting award in his career.
