Newland Archer's infatuation with May Welland's innocence can't be missed in the beginning scenes of the novel. The theme of innocence changes throughout the novel, as May states she is pregnant only to ensure that Ellen stays away from Newland.

Days go by, and Vickie stops talking to Charles and stays away from the truck stop. She also wears a long coat lined with ballistic nylon and Kevlar, the inside lining holding a vast arsenal of weapons. Radinov prefers to be paid for her services in heroin, which she sells in Russia; she personally stays away from the drug herself.

Charlie promises to keep in touch but Max gives him money to fund IVF on the condition that Charlie stays away from Walford and never contacts Jack again, threatening him with more violence if he backs out. After handing his phone to Max and telling him that he's dead inside, Charlie leaves while Max smashes the phone. Balzac (typeset as BALZAC) is a Japanese punk band formed in 1992 in Kyoto. The band was founded by singer and songwriter Hirosuke Nishiyama, who has remained the only constant member of the band since its creation. Ark manages to break this condition, and although Princess Elle at first stays away from Ark, she begins to grow close to him. In continuing to follow the Elder's commands, Ark ultimately awakes the ingenious Beruga, a scientist who survived the destruction of the previous world by hiding himself in a cryogenic sleep.
